The vast majority of us have experienced the common cold at one time or another. This can range from brief
periods of feeling tired to major serious influenza – or the flu. The financial losses caused by the common cold
have a huge impact on the US every year as millions of days are lost from work, not to mention absences from

schools and colleges.
However, what is referred to as the common cold is not just one, but over 200 different viruses which are
known to produce cold symptoms. Roughly 30 to 35 percent of all adult colds are caused by nasal passage
viruses or rhinoviruses, of which well over a 100 different types have been identified. Still, the causes of up to
half of all adult colds remain unknown.
In general, symptoms appear within 48 or 72 hours after infection and include the usual runny nose, sore
throat, sneezing, headaches, body aches, temperatures and possibly bouts of fever. Although most sufferers pull
through within a week, symptoms can last from between two to fourteen days. In some cases a cold can result in
secondary infections, especially in the middle ear and sinuses, and they require treatment with antibiotics. The
human body’s defense system is extremely complex and actively operates to eliminate viral infections. This is
done by generating and then releasing white blood cells which defend the body against infection.
Question 39: What is the main purpose of this passage?

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B , C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the questions from 43 to 50 .
In the 1920s, experiments were conducted at a factory in Hawthorne, Illinois that were aimed at
determining what effects changing working conditions would have on productivity. The first experiment
measured the effects of changes in overall factory illumination levels on assembly rates of telephone parts, and
much to the factory owners’ surprise, output rose whether illumination was increased or decreased.
Professor Elton Mayo was hired to interpret the data. He concluded that the workers’ awareness of the
study was the cause of the rise in productivity. His premise was that because they knew they were being
observed, they changed their behavior, a phenomenon that soon became known as the Hawthorne effect. The
principle has since been validated by other studies; however, modern researchers who have looked back at the
Hawthorne experiments have found that they were significantly flawed. The information collected from the
studies was poorly recorded, and the results were manipulated and misinterpreted. For example, worker
interviews were dismissed if they did not support the conclusion Mayo had drawn.
While the increases in the workers’ productivity could be explained in part by the Hawthorne effect, there
were additional possible causes. The workers in the studies became the center of much attention, bonded as a
group, and gained new privileges in exchange for working faster, such as the freedom to talk while working.
They were given feedback on the number of parts they assembled, which has been shown to influence rates of
production. Further calling into question Mayo’s findings, two mediocre workers were replaced during the
studies by more productive workers. All of these factors combined affect production, but they were largely
overlooked by Mayo. The existence of the Hawthorne effect is now widely accepted, but, ironically, it was not
proven by the experiments from which it derives its name

B. The output of the employees decreased dramatically.
C. The number of accidents in the factory unexpectedly decreased.
D. The number of worker complaints increased.
Question 46: According to the passage, all of the following are true EXCEPT
A. The result of the experiments didn’t take the factory owners aback.

C. Working productivity didn’t depend on illumination levels.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the questions
A recent study suggests that teens’ relationship with parents, friends and teachers may have a lot to do with
why they don’t get a good night’s sleep.
David Maume, a sociologist and sleep researcher, analyzed federal health data, which interviewed 974
teenagers when they were 12, and then again at 15. He found that family dynamics have much to do with how well
kids sleep. Teens, who had warm relations with their parents and felt like they could talk to them or their parents were
supportive of them, tended to sleep better. However, families that were going through a divorce or a remarriage
tended to affect teens’ sleep.
And problems at school also affected teens’ sleep. Feeling safe at school and having good relations with
teachers tended to promote better sleep. As did good relationships with friends. Kids who took part in sports or other
positive social activities or shared similar academic goals with their friends were also more likely to get a good night’s
sleep.
These add up to what makes lots of sense: a general feeling of well-being helps teens sleep. If we’re happy
and contented, we’re much more likely to sleep better than if we’re sad and anxious.

Now, of course, teens can hardly resist being drawn to their computers and social networking. Maume also
found that when parents were strict not only about bedtime, but also about limiting technology, kids slept better. It’s a
finding that seems obvious, but parents really do matter when it comes to health habits of their teenagers. Clearly,
teenagers aren’t getting 9 to 10 hours a night, which puts them at risk for all the consequences of lack of sleep,
including poor academic performance, colds and stress.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the questions
I left school and university with my head packed full of knowledge; enough of it, anyway, to pass all the
examinations that were put in my path. As a well-educated man I rather expected my work to be a piece of cake,
something at which my intellect would allow me to excel without undue effort. It came as something of a shock,
therefore, to encounter the world outside for the first time, and to realize that I was ill-equipped, not only for the
necessary business of earning a living, but, more importantly, for coping with all the new decisions which came my
way, in both life and work.
I was soon to discover that my mind had been trained to deal with closed problems, whereas most of what I
now had to deal with were open-ended problems. ‘What is the cost of sales?’ is a closed problem, one with a right or a
wrong answer. ‘What should we do about it?’ is an open problem, one with any number of possible answers, and I had
no experience of taking this type of decision.
I had been educated in an individualist culture. My scores were mine. No one else into it, except as
competitors in some imagined race. I was on my own in the learning game at school and university. Not so in my work,
I soon realized. Being an individual star would not help me there if it was in a failing group. I had discovered, rather
later than most, the necessity of others.
So much of the content of what I had learned was irrelevant, while the process of learning it had cultivated a
set of attitudes and behaviors which were directly opposed to what seemed to be needed in real life. Although I had
studied philosophy, I hadn’t applied it to myself. It would be nice to think that our schools today prepare people better

for life and for work. The subjects may appear to be a little more relevant, but we are still left to learn about work at
work, and about life by living it. I believe we could do more to make sure that the process of education had more in
common with the processes of living and working as they are today, so that the shock of reality is less cruel.
(Adapted from New proficiency Gold Coursebook by Jacky Newbrook and Judith Wilson)

35.
One custom that gives insight into people’s history and values is the way they greet one
another. There is a wide range of greetings around the world. These range from the common
handshake to other strange rituals found in some countries. Let’s take a look at how the simple
action of greeting someone differs greatly from place to place.
In the United States and Canada, for example, a simple handshake or nod is the norm. The
handshake has an interesting origin: it started long ago as a way of showing people that you

weren’t carrying a weapon. Shaking the person’s right hand while looking him or her in the eye is
the usual method. Handshakes are also common in other parts of the world, including Britain and
Russia. In Russia, males grasp other men’s hands very strongly during the handshake.
Handshakes are also how most people in New Zealand greet each other. However, the native
Maori people of that country display more physical contact: they press their noses together in a
sign of trust and closeness.
In other countries, such as France and Belgium, hugging and kissing are more common
when two people meet. In those cultures, people kiss each other on the cheeks. The number of
times varies depending on the particular country. In Saudi Arabia, men might hug and kiss each
other (but not a woman) on the cheek. Men will also shake hands with other men there. In some
Eastern countries, including Korea and Japan, bowing is the traditional greeting. In Japan, the
deeper the bow, the deeper the respect shown. The strangest custom, though, is likely in Tibet.

People there opt to stick out their tongue to greet others.
31. What is this reading mainly about?
A. The importance of handshakes all around the world
B. The origins and histories of various greetings
C. The strangest types of greetings on Earth.
D. The wide range of greeting customs in the world
32. Which of the following sentence is TRUE?
A. People in Russia, but not England, shake hands
B. The number of times people kiss on the cheek varies
C. In the past, people nodded if they weren’t carrying a weapon
D. You shouldn’t look at people when shaking their hands in the United States
33. How do most people in New Zealand greet each other?
A. With a handshake
B. By pressing noses together
C. With a kiss on the cheek
D. By sticking cut their tongue
34. Which type of country is NOT mentioned in the reading?
A. A North American country
B. A European country
C. A South American country
D. An Asian country
35. What can be inferred about getting customs in Saudi Arabia?
A. Men shake hands with women when meeting them for the first time
B. It’s not proper for men to kiss women when they meet
C. Women do not kiss other women when they meet
D. Women can kiss men, but men can’t kiss women when they meet.
Read the following passage and choose the correct answer to each of the questions from 36 to
42.
In the West, cartoons are used chiefly to make people laugh. The important feature of all
these cartoons is the joke and the element of surprise which is contained. Even though it is very

funny, a good cartoon is always based on close observation of a particular feature of life and
usually has a serious purpose.
Cartoons in the West have been associated with political and social matters for many years.
In wartime, for example, they proved to be an excellent way of spreading propaganda.
Nowadays cartoons are often used to make short, sharp comments on politics and governments
as well as on a variety of social matters. In this way, the modern cartoon has become a very
powerful force in influencing people in Europe and the United States.
Unlike most American and European cartoons, however, many Chinese cartoon drawings in
the past have also attempted to educate people, especially those who could not read and write.
Such cartoons about the lives and sayings of great men in China have proved extremely useful
in bringing education to illiterate and semi-literate people throughout China. Confucius,
Mencius and Laozi have all appeared in very interesting stories presented in the form of
cartoons. The cartoons themselves have thus served to illustrate the teachings of the Chinese
sages in a very attractive way.
In this sense, many Chinese cartoons are different from Western cartoons in so far as they do
not depend chiefly on telling jokes. Often, there is nothing to laugh at when you see Chinese

cartoons. This is not their primary aim. In addition to commenting on serious political and
social matters, Chinese cartoons have aimed at spreading the traditional Chinese thoughts and
culture as widely as possible among the people.
Today, however, Chinese cartoons have an added part to play in spreading knowledge. They
offer a very attractive and useful way of reaching people throughout the world, regardless of the
particular country in which they live. Thus, through cartoons, the thoughts and teachings of the
old Chinese philosophers and sages can now reach people who live in such countries as Britain,
France, America, Japan, Malaysia or Australia and who are unfamiliar with the Chinese culture.
Until recently, the transfer of knowledge and culture has been overwhelmingly from the West
to the East and not vice versa. By means of cartoons, however, publishing companies in Taiwan,
Hong Kong and Singapore are now having success in correcting this imbalance between the
East and the West.

Cartoons can overcome language barriers in all foreign countries. The vast increase in the
popularity of these cartoons serves to illustrate the truth of Confucius’s famous saying “One
picture is worth a thousand words.”
36. Which of the following clearly characterizes Western cartoons?
A. Enjoyment, liveliness, and carefulness.
B. Originality, freshness, and
astonishment.
C. Humour, unexpectedness, and criticism.
