Mother Nature's Revenge
There have been lots of films that depict an ongoing or impending disaster (25)______ is mainly caused by
natural phenomena, the effects of which have a deep impact on mankind. Quite often technological arrogance
or the exploitation of nature by men evoke Mother Nature's revenge which is cruel but not unjustifiable in any
case. (26)______, all of us have witnessed floods, occurring mainly due to massive deforestation, or the
continuous temperature rise with the subsequent melting of the ice caps and desertification affecting
(27)______ countries worldwide. Additionally, the effects of pollution are of great significance since they not
only affect the flora and fauna -with the list of the endangered species getting longer and longer -but also
human beings due to (28)______ in the food chain. In recent years, environmental organisations and activists
have sounded the alarm, but it is up to the governments to take drastic measures in order to avoid more serious
problems in the future. Our relationship with nature has to be reciprocal. If we don't wish to see the side effects
of our (29)______ actions, then we all have to stop the destruction of natural habitats and scale down pollution.

Ireland now has one of the best education systems in the world. Class sizes are small, exam results are
good and most children are happy to stay at school after the minimum leaving age of sixteen. It is easy to
forget that the picture used to be very different.
For years, Ireland had one of the most complicated education systems in the world. There were many
different kinds of school, but most of them had a lot in common. Classes were large and the teaching was very
traditional. As in many countries, teachers used to hit the children if they made mistakes (the government
banned corporal punishment in 1982).
Parents used to pay for their children's education and, as a result, there were schools for the rich and
schools for the poor. Boys and girls went to different schools and studied different subjects. Nowadays, most
schools are free and only about half the schools are single-sex. In many ways, education is now a woman's
world. Girls do better than boys in their exams, more girls go to university and most teachers are women.

At the end of secondary school, students take their final exams (the 'Leaving Certificate'). Compulsory

subjects are maths, history, Irish and a foreign language. In addition, they must choose two or three extra
subjects. Some of these, like Business Organization, help to prepare them for the world of work. This is very
different from the past when Latin, Greek and Religion used to be the most important subjects.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the questions from 36 to 42.
Dolphins are one of the most intelligent species on the planet, which makes them a very interesting animal
to scientists. In their natural habitats, dolphins use various vocalization techniques. They whistle and squeak
to recognize members of their pod, identify and protect their young, and call out warnings of danger. They
also make clicking sounds used for echolocation to find food and obstacles in dark and murky waters.
Amazingly, the whistling sound that the bottlenose dolphin makes has been found to have a similar pattern
to human language. They always make conversational sounds when they greet each other. If you listen to
dolphins' squeaks and squeals, it will sound like they are having a conversation.
Dolphins usually use both sound and body language to communicate with each other. It is through gesture
and body language, however, that most of their communication with humans comes. Dolphins can be trained
to perform complicated tricks. This suggests they have a high level of intelligence and communication
capacity. If they work for a long time with a trainer, they are able to recognize and understand human
commands.
A lot of dolphin communication has been studied using dolphins in captive environments. These studies
have been criticized because some marine biologists believe that dolphins living in aquariums or research
centers cannot be considered "normal.” Even so, most believe that studying dolphin communication in
captivity is useful for beginning to understand the complexity of dolphin communication. After all, dolphins
are one of the most intelligent animals. Their ability to communicate is impressive and worthy of study.

Education is another area of social life in which information technology is changing the way we
communicate. Today's college students may not simple sit in a lecture or a library to learn about their

field. Through their computers and the wonders of virtual reality they can participate in lifelike
simulated experiences. Consider the following scenario of the future of education made possible
through developments in information technology.
For children over the age of 10, daily attendance at schools is not compulsory. Some of the older
children attend school only once or twice a weekly to get tutorial support or instruction from a teacher.
For the most part, pupils are encouraged to work online from home. Students should complete a
minimum number of study hour per year; however, they may make up these hours by studying at home
at times that suit their family schedule. They can log on early or late in the day and even join live
classes in other countries. In order to ensure that each student is learning adequately, computer software
will automatically monitor the number hours a week each student studies on line as well as that

student's learning materials and assessment activities. Reports will be available for parents and
teachers. The software can then identify the best learning activities and conditions for each individual

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the following questions

Do you feel like your teenager is spending most of the day glued to a phone screen? You're not too
far off. A new survey from the Pew Research Center reveals the surprising ways that technology
intersects with teen friendships — and the results show that 57 percent of teens have made at least one
new friend online. Even more surprisingly, only 20 percent of those digital friends ever meet in person.
While teens do connect with their friends face-to-face outside of school, they spend 55 percent of
their day texting with friends, and only 25 percent of teens are spending actual time with their friends
on a daily basis (outside of school hallways). These new forms of communication are key in
maintaining friendships day-to-day — 27 percent of teens instant message their friends every day, 23
percent connect through social media every day, and 7 percent even video chat daily. Text messaging
remains the main form of communication — almost half of survey respondents say it's their chosen
method of communication with their closest friend.
While girls are more likely to text with their close friends, boys are meeting new friends (and
maintaining friendships) in the gaming world-89 percent play with friends they know, and 54 percent
play with online-only friends. Whether they're close with their teammates or not, online gamers say that
playing makes them feel "more connected" to friends they know, or gamers they've never met.

When making new friends, social media has also become a major part of the teenage identity - 62
percent of teens are quick to share their social media usernames when connecting with a new friend
(although 80 percent still consider their phone number the best method of contact). Despite the negative
consequences -21 percent of teenage users feel worse about their lives because of posts they see on
social media — teens also have found support and connection through various platforms. In fact, 68
percent of teens received support during a challenging time in their lives via social media platforms.
Just as technology has become a gateway for new friendships, or a channel to stay connected with
current friends, it can also make a friendship breakup more public. The study reveals that girls are
more likely to block or unfriend former allies, and 68 percent of all teenage users report experiencing
"drama among their friends on social media."

answer to each of the questions from 36 to 42.
Since the world became industrialized, the number of animal species that have either become extinct
or have neared extinction has increased. Bengal tigers, for instance, which once roamed the jungles in vast
numbers, now number only about 2,300. By the year 2025, it is estimated that they will become extinct.
What is alarming about the case of the Bengal tiger is that this extinction will have been caused almost
entirely by poachers who, according to some sources, are not always interested in material gain but in
personal gratification. This is an example of the insensitivity that is contributing to the problem of
extinction. Animals such as the Bengal tiger, as well as other endangered species, are valuable parts of the
world’s ecosystem. International laws protecting these animals must be enacted to ensure their survival - and

the survival of our planet.
Countries around the world have begun to deal with the problem in various ways. Some countries, in an
effort to circumvent the problem, have set aside large amounts of land to animals reserves. They then charge
admission prices to help make a payment on the costs of maintaining the parks, and they often must also
depend on world organizations for support. This money enables them to invest in equipment and patrols to
protect the animals. Another response to the increase in animal extinction is an international boycott of
products made from endangered species. This has had some effect, but by itself it will not prevent animals
from being hunted and killed.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the questions from 43 to 50.
According to the best evidence gathered by space probes and astronomers, Mars is an inhospitable
planet, more similar to Earth’s Moon than to Earth itself – a dry, stark, seemingly lifeless world. Mars’ air
pressure is equal to Earth’s at an altitude of 100,000 feet. The air there is 95 percent carbon dioxide.
Mars has no ozone layer to screen out the sun’s lethal radiation. Daytime temperatures may reach
above freezing, but because the planet is blanketed by the mere wisp of an atmosphere, the heat radiates
back into space. Even at the equator, the temperature drops to -50C (-60F) at night. Today there is no liquid
water, although valleys and channels on the surface show evidence of having been carved by running water.
The polar ice caps are made of frozen water and carbon dioxide, and water may be frozen in the ground as

permafrost.
Despite these difficult conditions, certain scientists believe that there is a possibility of transforming Mars into a more Earth-like planet. Nuclear reactors might be used to melt frozen gases and
eventually build up the atmosphere. This in turn could create a “greenhouse effect” that would stop heat
from radiating back into space. Liquid water could be thawed to from a polar ocean. Once enough ice has
melted, suitable plants could be introduced to build up the level of oxygen in the atmosphere so that, in
time, the planet would support animal life from Earth and even permanent human colonies. “This was once
thought to be so far in the future as to be irrelevant,” said Christopher Mckay, a research scientist at NASA.
“But now it’s starting to look practical. We could begin word in four or five decades.”
The idea of “terra-forming” Mars, as enthusiasts call it, has its roots in science fiction. But as
researchers develop a more profound understanding of how Earth's ecology supports life, they have begun
to see how it may be possible to create similar conditions on Mars. Don’t plan on homesteading on Mars any
time soon, though. The process could take hundreds or even thousands of years to complete and the cost
would be staggering.

answer to each of the questions.
Culture is a word in common use with complex meanings, and is derived, like the term broadcasting, from the
treatment and care of the soil and of what grows on it. It is directly related to cultivation and the adjectives
cultural and cultured are part of the same verbal complex. A person of culture has identifiable attributes, among
them a knowledge of and interest in the arts, literature, and music. Yet the word culture does not refer solely to
such knowledge and interest nor, indeed, to education. At least from the 19th century onwards, under the
influence of anthropologists and sociologists, the word culture has come to be used generally both in the singular
and the plural (cultures) to refer to a whole way of life of people, including their customs, laws, conventions, and

values.
Distinctions have consequently been drawn between primitive and advanced culture and cultures, between elite
and popular culture, between popular and mass culture, and most recently between national and global cultures.
Distinctions have been drawn too between culture and civilization; the latter is a word derived not, like culture or
agriculture, from the soil, but from the city. The two words are sometimes treated as synonymous. Yet this is
misleading. While civilization and barbarism are pitted against each other in what seems to be a perpetual
behavioural pattern, the use of the word culture has been strongly influenced by conceptions of evolution in the
19th century and of development in the 20th century. Cultures evolve or develop. They are not static. They have
twists and turns. Styles change. So do fashions. There are cultural processes. What, for example, the word
cultured means has changed substantially since the study of classical (that is, Greek and Roman) literature,
philosophy, and history ceased in the 20th century to be central to school and university education. No single
alternative focus emerged, although with computers has come electronic culture, affecting kinds of study, and
most recently digital culture. As cultures express themselves in new forms not everything gets better or more
civilized.
The multiplicity of meanings attached to the word made and will make it difficult to define. There is no single,
unproblematic definition, although many attempts have been made to establish one. The only non-problematic
definitions go back to agricultural meaning (for example, cereal culture or strawberry culture) and medical
meaning (for example, bacterial culture or penicillin culture). Since in anthropology and sociology we also
acknowledge culture clashes, culture shock, and counter-culture, the range of reference is extremely wide.
