Man is a land animal, but he is also closely tied to the sea. Throughout history the sea has
served the need of man. The sea has provided man with food and a convenient way to travel to
many parts of the world. Today, nearly two thirds of the worlds population live within 80 km of
the sea coast.
In the modern technological world, the sea offers many resources to help mankind survive.
Resources on land are beginning to be used up. The sea, however, still can be hoped to supply
many of mans needs. The list of riches of the sea yet to be developed by mans technology is
impressive. Oil and gas explorations have been carried out for nearly 30 years. A lot of valuable
minerals exist on the ocean floor ready to be mined.
Fish farming promises to be a good way to produce large quantities of food. The culture of
fish and shellfish is an ancient skill practiced in the past mainly by Oriental people.
Besides oil and gas, the sea may offer new sources of energy. Experts believe that the warm
temperature of the ocean can be used in a way similar to the steam in a steamship. Ocean
currents and waves offer possible use as a source of energy.
Technology is enabling man to explore ever more deeply under the sea. The development of
strong, new materials has made this possible.
The technology to harvest the sea continues to improve. Experts believe that by the year
2050s the problems that prevent us from fully exploiting the food, minerals, and energy sources
of the sea will be largely solved.

predict the questions which would be asked. This was the case as regards two students in my class at college. Both
of them were exceptionally bright, but in the final year exam neither of them got an A grade. In fact, they both got
Cs. The exam had tested us on questions which had come up the previous year. They had both assumed that the

One of the most urgent environmental problems in the world today is the shortage of
clean water. Having clean drinking water is basic human right. But acid rain, industrial pollution
and garbage have made many sources of water undrinkable. Lakes, reservoirs and even entire
seas have become vast pools of poison. Lake Baikal in Russia is one of the largest lakes in the
world. It contains a rich variety of animals and plants, including 1,300 rare species that do not
exist anywhere else in the world. But they are being destroyed by the massive volumes of
industrial effluent which pour into the lake everyday. Even where law existed, the government
did not have the power to enforce them. Most industries simply ignore the regulations. The
Mediterranean Sea occupies 1% of the world’s water surface. But it is the dumping ground for
50% of all marine pollution. Almost 16 countries regularly throw industrial wastes a few miles
off shore.
Water is free to everyone. A few years ago people thought that the supply of clean water
in the world was limitless. Today, many water supplies have been ruined by pollution and
sewage. Clean water is now scared, and we are at last beginning to respect this precious source.
We should do something now.

Mercury is the smallest member of the sun's family. It is only 3.100 miles across. It is
also the sun's swiftest planet. Its yearly journey round the sun is only 85 days.
Mercury always keeps one side towards the sun. On this side it is always day, on the other side
always night. We only see the lighted side.
Mercury appears to us like a yellowish orange star. The nearest planet to the sun, it is always
seen near the sun, either just before sunrise or soon after sunset. People sometimes call mercury
the morning star or evening star.
Mercury is half the size of the earth. Because it is much lighter, it has much less gravity. If you
can visit Mercury in a spaceship, you will find it a strange world. Its low gravity makes you feel
very light. If your weight on earth is 100 pounds, your weight on Mercury is only 27 pounds.
Looking at the sun from Mercury, you can see that it's much more brilliant than it is seen from
the earth. And the yellow centre of the sun appears three times bigger from Mercury.
On its lighted side, Mercury's temperature is about 300 degrees centigrate. But the dark side is
extremely cold, but 150 degrees below zero so mercury is probably the coldest as well as the
