What is Xoan
Phu Tho
singing?

Xoan singing is recognized by the USO as an intangible
heritage of Vietnam. Xoan singing originated from Phu
Tho. Xoan singing is a type of folk song, ritual, custom,
and worship of gods and emperors with a multi-element
art form. Usually performed in early spring. Xoan
singing is most popular in the ancestral land of Hung
Vuong - Phu Tho. Xoan singing has a life expectancy of
more than thousands of years. Along with that are the
great artistic and cultural values.




Stages of Xoan
Xoan singing has 3 stages:
singing
Ceremonial singing, Qua cac singing and love-making singing
(festival singing). Ritual singing includes songs: Singing to greet
the King, inviting the King, Drum Spears, Firecrackers, Incense
Poems, Closing the crowd. Singing qua cach includes 14 songs
(qua is a song; ca is a singing form, singing style): Kieu giang
cach; Idle way; Trang Mai Cach; The fish and buffaloes are
cultivated in a rotten manner; Opposite way; Interspatial gyrus;
Xoan tho cach; Lower the way; Falling in time; Eastern style; Four
seasons separate; The boat rowed away; Four ways of people; Play
in ways. Singing festival includes many songs, sung freely and
freely, the content of the songs is deeply lyrical: Thet Trau (also
known as Betel Girl); Quit the set; Please Hue - Do Hue; Word
puzzle; Singing together; Install Hue; Fish...

On December 8, 2017, at the 12th
Conference, the Intergovernmental
Committee for the Protection of Intangible
Cultural Heritage of UNESCO officially
removed Phu Tho Xoan Singing from the
state of emergency protection and

became a Representative intangible
cultural heritage of humanity. This is the
first and only case in the history of
UNESCO. This event marked the initial
success of Phu Tho province and of the
community who have made efforts and
determination to fulfill their commitment
to protect Xoan singing heritage in a state
of urgent need of protection over the past
6 years.

The most unique feature of Xoan singing is that when
dancing there is singing and vice versa, when singing
there is dancing in the echo of the musical instrument,
just a leather drum. Xoan singing currently exists in 18
communes of Phu Tho and Vinh Phuc provinces, of
which 15 communes and wards are in Viet Tri city, Phu
Ninh, Lam Thao, Tam Nong and Doan Hung districts
(Phu Tho province) and 3 communes in Phu Tho
province. 3 districts Lap Thach, Song Lo and Vinh Tuong
(Vinh Phuc province). In Phu Tho province, there are
currently 4 Xoan wards established and operating in
Viet Tri city, which are Xoan An Thai ward, Xoan Thet

ward, Xoan Phu Duc ward and Xoan Kim Dai ward.
