A GOOD JOB

In the past when married couples had problems they usually split up or continued to live together
in an unhappy relationship. These days couples, married or not, can get advice on their problems
from many sources. A lot of them come to me.

I’m a counsellor and I’m trained to listen to couples with problems. Then I try to advise them on
the best way forward. One of my main tasks is to get people to talk – to each other and to me.
Often a relationship has problems because people keep all their feelings inside. If we talk about
things, we can often find an answer.

It’s also important to realise that we’re not all perfect. We all make mistakes. But we need to say
sorry and talk about how we can prevent these mistakes from happening again. This can make a
relationship stronger.

I don’t always succeed in helping people to stay together. Sometimes it’s better for the couple to
split up and start new lives apart. But it helps everyone if the break-up can be friendly, especially
for any children involved.

I love my job. I meet all sorts of people and it’s generally very rewarding.

ARE THE SENTENCES TRUE OR FALSE?

1. The writer advises single people as well as couples. _______

2. To become a counsellor you don’t need any training. _______

4. Problems usually destroy a marriage. _______

5. Parents who split up should stay friends for their children. _______

Imagine you have seen the programme. Write a letter to the programme makers. Include the
following information:

•say how much you enjoyed it

•say why you enjoyed it

•ask for information about a DVD of the programme

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to request further information about your World Support Programme, as a friend
and I are really interested in participating; and clarification of the following details:

Firstly, we were wondering about the average age of the volunteers. We are both twenty and
would wish to be with people our own age.

Secondly, I wonder if you could tell me in what countries the program operates and in what
communities we might be asked to work? Further, what skills are needed and is it useful to have
a good level of English?

In your advertisements, it says that the program is free of charge. Could you confirm that there
are no costs whatever to be met by the participants?

Finally, could you provide some information about the accommodation - is this in houses or
tents? - and the type of food to be anticipated?

We are feeling very enthusiastic about volunteering, and look forward to your reply.

Yours faithfully,

Dear Sir/ Madam,

This letter is to express my interest in Microsoft 2020. They are improving and easy to use.
Microsoft office has many helpful tools such as changing viewing formats, more ways to view
pictures and PDFs, and providing a more editable experience. Viewing photos, videos, and PDFs
is more convenient than ever with Microsoft office, etc.

It is evident that Microsoft Company has performed well over the past and has managed to
secure a competitive market position. Its success is attributed to a variety of factors, for instance,
a strong management body, an established brand name, a strong and experienced workforce, and
utilization of information technology among others. Although it has some weaknesses and it
faces some threats, it has been able to overcome this and its financial performance has been
excellent over the past. Of course, it helps me to manage my work more effectively.

However, the biggest disadvantage of Microsoft is the illegal and unethical monopolization of

power. It does not give the opportunity to reveal the potential of other smaller companies. It is
difficult to predict the future of Microsoft Corporation. Can I get its program from online or local
retailers directly?

Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to speaking with you about this
opportunity.

Yours faithfully,

ROAD PRICING

Yesterday the government announced that road pricing may be introduced in many major cities
next year and on all major UK routes within the next ten years. Motorists would then have to pay
to use the roads that take them to work, on holiday, or even to their children’s schools, in an
attempt to reduce the number of cars on our roads.

A survey we carried out earlier today shows that this has angered motorists. While being aware
that something needs to be done to ease the congestion on our roads, the majority of car owners
do not believe that road pricing is the answer. ‘Unless an alternative is given, this road pricing
will not be successful,’ said one person. ‘At the moment the road is the only option for many
commuters and if they want to get to work they will pay the charge. The government will get
more money but the roads will still be congested.’

Our survey has shown that motorists believe that a more efficient, convenient and cheaper
network of public transport is the only way to persuade them to stop using their cars. It seems
that the government still has a lot of thinking to do on the subject. Road pricing does not seem to
be the answer.

•an apology for not writing sooner
•news about yourself
•news about friends and/or family
•Ask questions about your friend
•an appropriate closing

Phần trả lời:
Hi Peter,

I’m terribly sorry for not writing to you sooner because of immersing myself in work and
reporting. Thanks for your letter, it gives me great pleasure to have correspondence with a pen-
friend like you and is interested in continuing this in future. In fact, it is this correspondence
which helps us to come closer and know more about ourselves.

As you know, I have just promoted to higher position, so it makes me really stress. In this time, I
also move to a new flat that is why I haven't been in touch for such a long. Anyway, I'd love to
hear all your news and I'm hoping we can get together soon to catch up. I just moved to a bigger
flat so maybe you can come and visit one day.

I would like to introduce you to my new friend. He is Tuan, and he has just moved to my
departure. He is so intelligent, and he has the same interesting like us.

Please pay my best regards to your parents. I am enclosing a copy of my photograph as desired
by you. I do not know to which of your friends you will show it but please do not show it to your
parents otherwise they will make a fun of you for having chosen an ill-figured boy like me as
your pen friend.

Yours friend,

Write an essay on the topic ‘The arts have an important role to play in society.’
•an introduction to the topic
•2-3 arguments with supporting examples
•an appropriate conclusion
The way a society functions often reflects its ethos, artistry and talent pursuits. I think it is
important for children to achieve proficiency in art subjects. Art plays an indispensable role in
shaping and expressing the cultural aspects of any nation. If no one pursued arts, we wouldn’t

have exquisite artifacts, sculptures, ornaments, and architectural monuments to boast of. It also
helps us understand our ancestors, roots, and evolutionary patterns through previous
civilizations.

Art has a profound effect on our creativity. Art as a field of work stimulates ingenuity and
inventiveness. Many famous artistic discoveries in literature, music, songs and dance forms
exemplify the success of art disciplines. The well-known painting of Mona Lisa by Leonardo da
Vinci, resplendent facade and breath-taking design of Taj Mahal by Shajahan and, Eiffel tower in
Paris are just a few illustrations. Likewise, many forms of music such as classical, jazz and rock
performances have emerged through arts.

Furthermore, art gives a platform for students to explore the hidden potentials and offers them
better career alternatives. Even people from less privileged backgrounds can change their life by
showcasing their artistic prowess. For example, last year the winner of India’s Got Talent hailed

from a humble background. This contestant not only earned huge prize money but also got
opportunities in upcoming films.

Lastly, I feel it is less likely that all students will be interested in pursuing mainstream subjects.
In order to have a balanced society, it is imperative that considerable proportion of students’
study art subjects. We need as many artists, painters, musicians, historians and media
professionals as we need doctors, engineers and scientists.

LIFE ON MARS?

In the UK people celebrate the first day of April by playing jokes on each other and sometimes
TV programmes and newspapers join in the fun! There have been some very clever jokes over
the years, which people believe because they are in the paper or on TV.

One that I remember vividly from when I was young was on a programme called Tomorrow’s
World. This programme looked at unusual scientific inventions and stories. It was on every

week, and was very popular. Well, this particular 1 April the programme started off looking at
the number of ‘missing people’ in Britain over the last year. They then went on to ‘prove’ that
the USA and Russia were starting a colony on the planet Mars and this was where all these
people had gone! They showed photographs of the planet with heat rising from the ground.
Apparently the people were living under the ground in specially designed homes.

I believed this story completely! It seemed so real and so possible. That was until I got to school
the next day and realised that the whole thing was a joke! But it was a very clever joke and one
that I have always remembered.

CHOOSE THE BEST ANSWERS.

4. On the programme you could see

Dear …,

I’m writing to tell you about my horrible holiday in Da Lat. I’m here with my friends Ngoc and
Tien and we are staying in a cheap hotel. Our room is small and dirty. The weather is cold and
there is no hot water in the shower. The food is good but it’s expensive so we eat bread most of
the time. Now we are having lunch in our hotel room. The people are very rude and unfriendly.
We can’t go sightseeing in the city because we lost all our money. Please send us some money
to come back home.
