practiced by Maria Montessori of Italy in the early 1900s. Nancy McCormick Ram Busch is
credited with popularizing the method in the United States, where today there are over 400

B. In 1921, a certain James Chaffin died, leaving his entire fortune to his third son,
Marshal, in a will which had been written a full fifteen years earlier, in 1905, and signed in
front of witnesses. His wife and two other sons were virtually cut off without a penny.
Marshal was not inclined to split up the inheritance he had come into any more fairly.
C. Once it was found, they came across a note sewn in the lining of one of the pockets
saying they should look in an old family Bible. This Bible was found in the keeping of
Chaffin’s widow and examined in front of independent witnesses. Sure enough, there in the
Bible they discovered a later version of the will, one which divided the property and money
evenly between the widow and the three sons. The will appeared to be genuine and Marshal
was not prepared to challenge it in court.
D. Some people believe that the dead still keep in touch with us through our dreams.

One of the most famous and extraordinary cases of contact with the dead was the so-called
Chaffin Will affair.

When I arrive, the outside temperature was – 28

o
C! I thought, “Do I really
want to sleep in a hotel made of ice?”
But when I walked inside, I was amazed. It was warmer than outside –
about -4
o
C. This is because of the wallls – they’re 120 centimeters thick. And the hotel
was absolutely wonderful! The floors and ceilings were ice. There were beautiful ice
sculptures everywhere. There were also two art galleries, a movie theater, a skating
rink, and a wedding chapel. Even the drinking glasses were made of ice. And in the
rooms? Yes, even the beds were made of ice. I slept in a sleeping bag on a mattress, and
the mattress was on top of deer skins. It was a lot of fun!
They build the ice hotel every year in December, and you can stay there
from January to April. In 2002, more than 50,000 people visited the hotel to look at it,
and 3,000 guests stayed at least one night.
Beaches, mountains, lakes, museums – boring! The place to go is the ice
hotel.

Sometimes you know things about people the first time you see them, for example,
that you want to be friends with them or that you don’t trust them. But perhaps this kind
of intuition isn’t as hard to explain as it may seem. For instance, people give out body
language signal all the time. The way you hold your body, head and arms tells people
about your mood. If you hold your arms tightly at your sides, or fold them across your
chest, people will generally feel that you are being defensive. Holding your head to one
side shows interest in the others, while an easy, open posture indicates that you are self-
confident. All this affects the way you feel about someone.
12
12
Also, a stranger may remind you of a meeting with someone. This may be because
of something as simple as the fact that he or she is physically similar to someone who
treated you well or badly. Your feeling about a stranger could be influenced by a smell
in the air that brings to mind a place where you were happy as a child. Since even a
single word can bring back a memory such as that, you may never realize it is
happening.

The Secrets of a Very Long Life
There are several places in the world that are famous for people who live a very long
time. These places are usually in mountainous areas, far away from modern cities.
Hunza, in the Himalayas, is where many people over 100 years of age are still in
good physical health. Additionally, men of ninety and women of fifty still have
babies. Scientists think that these people have these benefits: a healthful unpolluted
environment with clean air and water; a simple diet high in vitamins, fiber, and
nutrition, but low in fat, cholesterol, sugar, and unnatural chemicals; and physical
work as well as other activities in the fields. The Caucasus Mountains in Russia are
also famous for the longevity of its inhabitants – mostly farmers. One reason for the
good health of the people might be regular exercise in the moderate climate: the
temperature is about 70 Fahrenheit all year long. In addition, the water from
mountain streams is high in minerals – a very valuable resource for people,
vegetables, fruits, and wildlife.

1. Men over 80 years old in Hunza can be new fathers.
2. People in Hunza consume a lot of vitamins, fiber, fat, sugar, nutrition, etc.
3. It’s very cold in winter and hot in summer in the Caucasus Mountains.
4. The water in the Caucasus Mountains contains a lot of minerals

May 7th
1840 was the birthday of one of the most famous Russian composers of the nineteenth century:
Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky, the son of a mining inspector. Tchaikovsky studied music as a child and

later studied composition at the St. Petersburg Conservatory. His greatest period of productivity
occurred between 1876 and 1890, during which time he enjoyed patronage of Madame von Meck, a
woman he never met, who gave him a yearly living stipend. Madame von Meck later terminated her
friendship with Tchaikovsky, as well as his living allowance, when she, herself, was facing financial
difficulties. It was during the time of Madame von Meck’s patronage, however, that Tchaikovsky
created the music for which he is most famous, including the music for the ballets of “Swan Lake” and
“The Sleeping Beauty”. Tchaikovsky’s music, well-known for its rich melodic and sometimes
melancholy passages, was one of the first that brought serious dramatic music to dance. Before this,Sở
