Planning Your Installation
The planning process prior to installation is a critical component of the success of
any product installation or upgrade process. In the planning process, understanding
the overall architecture and the tracking all the details are critical.
Understand the current hardware resources and budget parameters to stage,

test, and perform the installations and upgrades.
Understand the application and database architecture used in the business

applications.
What specific functionality needs to be tested to ensure certain speed

and/or security requirements?
Is there a test plan to support the validation process after the upgrade

and installation?
Understand the business’s service level agreements for all SQL Server

applications.
Is there a time window available for upgrading the SQL Server

instances?
Is there disk space (or budget for additional disks) to host a side-by-


side installation?
If the time window is insufficient for an upgrade, consider a migration

process of upgrading the instance on another server or an instance on
the same server.
Document the installation components to be used in the process.

Create all the service and administrator accounts required by the

various SQL Server components.
Detail the directories where the software and data directories will reside.

Define and implement a testing process for the installation/upgrade and

success criteria.
Plan the disk layout of the new or existing environment to ensure enough

storage space for backups, additional space for installation files and logs as
well as the database files.
Establish a backup and recovery plan.

Perform backup and recovery on test servers to ensure procedures are

operable in the case of a production incident.
