Note that management tools such as SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS)
and Business Intelligence Developer Studio (BIDS) are supported in WOW64,
a feature of 64-bit editions of Windows that enables 32-bit applications to run
natively in 32-bit mode. Applications function in 32-bit mode, even though the
underlying operating system is running on the 64-bit operating system.
In determining which edition of SQL Server 2008 to install and use, understand-
ing hardware requirements from existing or new servers is critical (see Table 2.5).

The Standard Edition supports a maximum of four CPUs for both the 32-bit
and 64-bit hardware (see Table 2.6). The CPU maximum of four is one of the key
hardware limitations of the Standard Edition compared with the Enterprise Edition
in the areas of scalability and high availability. Table 2.7 lists the hardware require-
ments for SQL Server 2008 Workgroup and Web editions.

SQL Server 2008 Developer Edition includes all the functionality of the
Enterprise Edition, but it is licensed only for development, test, and demo purposes.
In addition, the Developer Edition provides all the support for the 32-bit and
both 64-bit processors. The difference between the hardware configurations is
the maximum number of CPUs supported (see Table 2.8).

In terms of disk space for the installing the SQL Server components, the
following are the minimum disk requirements for the various SQL Server
components.
Database engine, replication, and full-text search and default data files

use 280 MB
Analysis Services engine and data files require 90 MB

Reporting Services and Report Manager require a total of 120MB


Integration Services require 120MB

Client components require 850MB

SQL Server Books Online and SQL Server Compact Books Online

require 240MB
Operating System Requirements
The operating system minimum requirements for a SQL Server 2008 upgrade
or installation is dependent on the hardware, as well as on which version of SQL
Server 2008 is being installed. Table 2.9 shows most of the operating system options
for the Enterprise and Standard Editions of SQL Server 2008.
