Unit 13: HOBBIES

 Time allotted: 45 minutes
 Aims:
+ to help the students practice reading skill and doing the exercises in the text
+ to help students know more about some kinds of hobbies
 Objectives: by the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
+ be enriched their knowledge of some hobbies.
+ to talk about their hobbies confidently and flexibly based on what they’ve made
acquaintance with
 Lexical items: accomplished (adj), modest (adj), avid (adj), discard (v), indulge in
 Teaching aids: blackboard, textbook, posters, pictures, etc.
Procedure:
 Warm-up: (5’) Matching
- Teacher divides class into 2 teams: team A & team B
- Teacher gives instruction: “I have six pictures for each team. You will have one minute
to identify all of them. Then, the representative of each team will go to the board and
match the name of activities in the cards that I give with the pictures Which team has
more correct answers will be the winner.”
- Teacher checks students’ understanding about the instructions:
+ “How many pictures are there?”
(Expected answer: six)
+ “Who will go to the blackboard and match the card with the picture?”
(Expected answer: the representatives)
- Teacher shows the poster of six pictures about some kinds of hobby: mountain -
climbing, going swimming, going fishing, singing, listening to music, reading books.
- Teacher asks the representative of each team to go to the blackboard and match the
name of the activities in the cards with the pictures


- Teacher checks students’ work and give feedback
 Lead-in: (2’) “What are all of them about?”
“What are your hobbies?”
 Stage 1: Pre-reading (10’)
• Pre-teach vocabulary (7’)
- Teacher elicits and presents new words:
 Accomplished (adj): “What is another word for “talented”?” (synonym)
 Modest (n): “Vu is the best student in our class but he’s very modest about his
study result. What does the word “modest” mean?” (example)
 Avid (adj): “How do you say “khao khát” in English? (translation)
 Discard (v): “I do not want to use this pen any more. I use another one. What did
I do with the first pen?” (explanation)
 Indulge in: “How do you say “say mê” in English? (translation)
- Teacher checks students’ understanding of new words: Slap the board
+ Teacher writes the words disorderly
+ Teacher divides class into two teams: team A and team B
+ Teacher gives instruction: “The leader of each tem will come near to the board. I will
read aloud the Vietnamese meaning of the words, one by one. The leader will run to the
board and slap on the word. Which team has more correct answer will be the winner.”
+ Teacher checks students’ understanding of instruction:
“Who will come near to the board?” (Expected answer: the leader)
“What does the leader do when I read aloud the Vietnamese meaning of the words?”
(Expected answer: Slap to the words)
+ Teacher gets students to play the game
+ Teacher checks students’ work and give feedback.

- Teacher shows the poster:
1. The most favorite hobby of the writer is playing the guitar.
2. The writer admires his uncle very much.
3. The writer didn’t collect fish from the rice field.

4. The writer is an avid stamp collector.

(Answer: No, he isn’t – paragraph 2)

near his house – paragraph 3)

- Teacher divides class into 2 teams: team A and team B
- Teacher gives instruction: “There are six stars on the blackboard. Each team will take
turn to choose a star and answer the question. If your answer is correct, you will get 1
mark. There are 2 lucky stars and if you are lucky, you will get 1 mark without
answering the question, also, you will have right to choose the next star. Which team
has more correct answer will be the winner”.
- Teacher checks students’ understanding of instruction:
+ “What is your duty?” (Expected answer: choose the stars and answer the questions)

+ “What happen if your choice is a lucky star?” (Expected answer: get one mark without
answering the question and have right to choose the next star)
- Teacher gives time for students to do the task.
- Teacher gives feedback.
 Stage 3: Post-reading: (6’)
• Discussion: (5’)
- Review some structures:
“What’s your hobby?”
“My hobby is…”
“Why do you like it?”
- Teacher asks students to work in pair to talk about their hobby
- Give time for students to do the task
- Go around and give help
- Give feedback
- Teacher asks 1- 2 students to perform their work.
- Teacher gives feedback
• Homework: (1’)
Write it up: “Write a short paragraph (about 50 words) to talk about your own hobby”
