LESSON PLAN
+ Lesson: English 10; Unit 15: Cities, Period 3: Listening.
+ Class details: Grade 10
+ Aims: to help ss to practice listening skill: listening for specific
information
+ Objectives: By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to:
- know how to use listening skill for specific information to do
multiple choice test and complete the grid.
- be familiar with speaking as a tour guide.
+ Materials: textbook, posters, pictures, handouts, cassette tapes.

Aim: To help ss feel exciting before starting the lesson and
lead them to the listening topic.
1. Warm up: Game: “Guessing the picture”
(using pictures, poster)
- T divides class into 2 teams
- T gives instruction to Ss:
+ There is a picture behind 6 numbers.
+ ss choose a number and answer the question in that
number. With each correct answer, ss will get 2 marks and the
number will be taken out so that ss can see a piece of the
picture; if not the number will be left there and ss turn to the
next question.


Checking:
• How many numbers are there?-> 6 numbers
• What should you do now? -> choose a number and
answer the question in that number.
Whole class
• How many marks will you get with each correct
answer? -> 2 marks
+ After question 4, which team can recognize ‘what is the
picture about?’ will receive 4 marks.
+ At the end of the game, the team who has more marks will
be the winner.
- T checks ss by asking the following sentences:
• Can you raise your hand and say the name of the
picture after question number 3? -> No, we can’t.
• How many marks will you get if your team can find
out the picture?-> 4 marks.
- T controls the game by asking each team to answer the
question in each number.
- After ss find out the picture, T decides which team is the
winner & congratulates to the winner.

2. Teaching vocabularies (using visual aids)
Aim: To give ss some new words of listening topic
a. monument :
- T shows the picture of the Statue of Liberty and explains to
ss about the new word: ‘The Statue of Liberty is the gift of
French people for American residents, so it is the monument
and becomes the symbol of America.’
- T says loudly the word twice and requires ss to repeat.
b. burning torch:
- T shows visual aid to ss and asks them to give the
Vietnamese word of the ‘burning torch’.
- After ss give the Vietnamese word, T says it in English.
- T says loudly the word twice and requires ss to repeat.
c. crown:
- T shows the picture and asks ss to give the Vietnamese name
of the picture, and then T translates it into English.
- T says loudly the word twice and requires ss to repeat.

Statue of Liberty. Before listening to the tape, I want you to
look through task 1 carefully to understand all test items and
guess the answers. After 2 minutes, I will call some of you go
to blackboard and write down your guesses”

- T asks ss which information in Task 1 can help ss predict
the answers.
- T listens to the ss’ answers and give feedback.
- Before lettings ss listen to the tape, T gives ss some tips to
do this task:
+ read through the test items to understand them and
underline the key words
+ identify what kind of word will be suitable in each
blank
+ listen to the tape and pay more attention to the key
words.
+ decide which options can be the correct answers based
on what they can hear.
- T gives model for ss by asking following questions:
1. Which information in sentence 1 can be the key words?
2. Which kinds of word will be suitable for in each blank?
- T gives instruction: “And now, I will let you listen to the
tape two or three times to choose the correct answers and

you also have to take some notes while you are listening
because I will ask you the reasons why you choose those
anwers”.
- Checking questions:
1. How many times can you listen to the tape?
2. What will you do while you are listening?
- Before checking ss’ answers, T asks ss to compare their
answers with their partners and calls some ss write down
their answers on blackboard in column “After listening
check”.
- T asks ss to explain why they choose those answers
- T lets ss listen again and give feedback.

Task 2: FILL IN BLANK: Fill in the missing information
in the table:
Aims: to help ss to practice listening skill: listening for
specific information to fill missing information in blanks
Task 2: Listen again, and fill in the missing information in
the table below:
- T gives instruction: “Let’s move on to another activity. In
this activity, I want you to work in pairs. You will read
through Task 2, discuss with your friend what kind of word
and then complete the grid in 2 minutes, basing on the
information they noted in your first listening. The first one
has already done as an example for you”.
- Concept checking questions:
1. What should we do in this task?
2. How many minutes will you work with your friend?
-After 2 minutes, T calls some ss to give their answers and
gives feedbacks.

Tape script:
The Statue of Liberty, one of America’s most familiar
images, is on an island in New York Harbour. It is a symbol
of freedom. Its formal name is Liberty Enlightening the
World. It was a gift to American people from the French to
show the friendship between the two nations. This is the
statue of a woman who is wearing a loose robe and a crown
on her head. Her right hand holds a burning torch, and her
left hand holds a tablet with the date July 4, 1776 on it. The
Statue weights 205 tons and is 46 metre high. It stands on a
stone and concrete base. The base and pedestal increase the
height of the monument to 93 metre. The outside is made of
copper. Inside, it has an iron frame. The Statue was complete
in 1884 in France, and then transported to American in 1886.
Tourists can visit the statue from 9.30 a.m to 5 p.m daily
except Christmas Day.

Aim: To help ss more understand about what they have
listened and practice more about their speaking skill.
Activity: Role-play
- T tells the situation: “in group of three, ss will imagine that
they are going to visit some famous places in America, one of
them is The Statue of Liberty. One student is the tour guide
and the two others are the visitors. They will ask the tour
guide something about the Statue of Liberty.”

- T gives to ss some useful languages : ss can ask some
questions like:
+ When was the Statue of Liberty made?
+ Why was it made?
+ask about its height, weight, the opening time…

- T gets ss to start their roles.
- T calls some groups to present their roles in front of the
class.
- T gives comments and some indirect corrects if needed.
