Assignment 2: Adaptation
Material chosen for Adaptation: Tieng Anh 10, Unit 14: The World Cup
I. GENERAL EVALUATION:
1. Good points:
• Topic: As of the current time of adaptation is in 2010, the topic “World Cup” is a hot
and interesting topic
• There are a variety of effective activities to teach different sub-skills:
o Reading: used variety of tasks (matching, gap-fill, T/F) to help students
practice the sub-skill: scanning for specific information.
o Listening: helps students practice the sub-skill: listening for specific
information and listening for gist.
2. Bad points:
• Activities are not communicative and interactive enough:
o Example: Speaking – Task 1: Teacher asks which football teams are in the
pictures and students answer. There is no interaction amongst students.
o Speaking – Task 2: Students talk to each other but it is not communicative, all
they do is mechanically following a set framework.
• Activities are too difficult for students to do:
o Speaking – Task 1: the pictures are too general, it is hard for students to
recognize the football teams
o Listening – Before you listen: the average students, especially students who are
not keen on sports, would not know who each players are just by looking at the
pictures given
=> These activities require students to have background knowledge on football.
Students may be sufficient in language ability but would not be able to do these tasks if they
lack this background knowledge. Hence, the exercises are too difficult and become

uninteresting.
• Activities are not interesting:
o Speaking – Task 2: Students only use the information in the table to replace the
information in the example dialogue. There is no personalization. In addition,
the information for students to talk about is quite dry.
