By the early 1800s. steam engines were not a new idea. James Watt, from Scotland, made the first steam engine in
1769. Most of Watt’s steam engines powered machines in factories. This was very useful, but the steam engine became really
useful in 1807. In that year, Robert Fulton, an American, made his first steamboat. His boat the North River, used a steam
engine to push it up the river. Before that, traveling up a river was very difficult, because people had to row their boat or use
