Grizzly bears, once a common sight in the Western United States, have been a threatened species for 25
years. From the estimated 50,000 grizzlies that Western settlers first saw 200 years ago, their numbers
have dropped to 1,200 bears in just four states – Montana, Wyoming, Idaho and Washington.
These few remaining grizzlies now face a threat biologists didn’t foresee 25 years ago.
Today, “modem cowboys” live in the country and work from their home computers. They have
accelerated growth in the areas where the bears are found.
But “bears show up in places where bears have been for thousands of years,” said Chris Servheen, grizzly
bear recovery coordinator for the Fish and Wildlife Service.
According to Servheen, residents in these areas need to learn the same lessons that campers in national
parks have learned. Any garbage you have must be stored, any food that you leave around will attract
bears, and if you see an occasional bear show up in your backyard, it does not necessarily need to be killed.
