Rachel Carson was born in 1907 in Springsdale, Pennsylvania. She studied biology in college
and zoology at Johns Hopkins University. Where she received her master’s degree in1993. in 1936, she
was hired by the U.S Fish and Wildife service, where she worked most or her life.
Carson ‘s book, Under the Sea wind, was published in 1941. It received excellent reviews, but
sales were poor until it was reissued in 1941. In that year, she published The Sea Around Us. Which
provided a fascinating look beneath the ocean’s surface, emphasizing human history as well as geology
and marine biology. His imagination and language had a poetic quality. Carson consulted no less than
1,000 printed sources. She had voluminous correspondence and frequent discussions with experts in
the field. However, she always realized the limitations of her non technical readers.
In 1962. Carson published Slient Spring, a book that sparked considerable controversy. It
proved how much harm was done by the uncontrolled, reckless use of insecticides. She detailed how
they poison the food supply of animals, kill birds and fish, and contaminate human food. Ta the time,
spokesmen for the chemical Industry mounted personal attacks against Carson and issused propaganda
to indicate that her findings were flawed. However, her work was vindicated by a 1963 report of the
President’s Science Advisory Committee.

Although they are an inexpensive supplier of vitamins, minerals, and high-quality protein, eggs
also contain a high level of blood cholesterol, one of the major cause of heart diseases. One egg yolk,

in fact, contain a little more than two-third of the suggested daily cholesterol limit. This knowledge has
cause egg sales to plummet in recent rears, which in turn has brought about the development of several
alternatives eating regular eggs. One alternative is to eat substitute eggs. These egg substitutes are not
really eggs, but they look somewhat like eggs when they are cooked. They have the advantage of
4
- 4 -
having low cholesterol rates and they can be scrambled or used in baking. One disadvantage, however,
is that they are not good for frying, poaching, or boiling. A second alternative to regular eggs is anew
type of egg, sometimes called ’designer’ eggs. These eggs are produced by hens that are fed low-fat
diets consisting of ingredients such as canola oil, flax, and rice bran. In spite of their diets, however,
these hens produce eggs that contain the same amount of cholesterol as regular eggs. Yet, the
producers of these eggs claim that eating their eggs will not raise the blood cholesterol in humans.
Egg producers claim that their product has been portrayed unfairly. They cite scientific studies
to back up their claim. And, in fact, studies on the relationship between eggs and human cholesterol
levels have brought mixed results. It may be that it is not the type of egg that is the main determinant
of cholesterol but the person who is eating the eggs. Some people may be more sensitive to cholesterol
derived from food than other people. In fact, there is evidence that certain dietary fats stimulate the
body’s production of blood cholesterol. Consequently, while it still makes sense to limit one’s intake
of eggs, even designer eggs, it seems that doing this without regulating dietary fat will probably not
help reduce the blood cholesterol level.
56. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. to inform people about the relationship between eggs and cholesterol
B. to convince people to eat ‘designer’ eggs and egg substitutes
C. to persuade people that eggs are unhealthy and should not be eaten
