Mark Twain, whose name is known all over the world, was born in a
small town on the Mississippi river in the USA. He spent his childhood on
the bank of the Mississippi. When he was twelve, his father died, and the
boy had to work. For some time he worked as a river pilot on the
Mississippi. Later he went west to work as a newspaper reporter in Virginia
City, Nevada. While he was on this job, he began to sign his articles “Mark
Twain”. From then on he used Mark Twain as his penname. In 1876, he
published his best novel “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer”. The profession
of a writer did not bring much money to Mark Twain. He had to write
articles for newspapers. He also traveled from place to place to read his
stories in concerts.
