VII/ Read the passage and choose the best answer
The word ‘desert’ conjures up an image of a hot, dry and arid landscape. There are many different
kinds of deserts. In general, a place where the water evaporation rate exceeds the amount of annual rainfall
is usually classified as being a desert. Therefore, deserts are not necessarily subject to hot temperatures.
‘Hot’ deserts experience high temperatures during the day all year round while ‘cold’ deserts have
relatively hot summers and extremely cold winters.
Deserts cover about one-fifth of the earth’s land area. Desert plants like cacti are not abundant, neither
is animal life. Animals that live in the desert have adaptations to cope with the lack of water, the sudden
changes of temperatures and the shortage of food. To avoid daytime heat, many of them are nocturnal;
they burrow beneath the surface and emerge at night to eat. Many desert animals do not have to drink at all
because they get all the water they need from their food. Most of them are small.
