We all know that one day there will be no more petrol in the world, or it will simply become too
expensive for us to use. This will be no bad thing, because petrol from cars does a great deal of damage
to the environment. It is unlikely that people will want to give up their cars and use buses or trains, so
we will need a new kind of fuel which, hopefully, will not create a lot of pollution.
This may sound like an impossible dream, but the good news is that this new fuel is already here, and it
is all around us. It comes from water. Water is made of two gases - hydrogen and oxygen The hydrogen
can be burned or used in a kind of battery to create energy, and the only thing it leaves behind is water,
which will not pollute the environment.
Many of the world's big car manufacturers are doing research into hydrogen cars. Recently one company
built a new hydrogen-powered car that looked exactly the same as an ordinary car and was just as good.
Of course, cars like these are not practical at the moment because there are no garages where you can fill
up, and hydrogen still costs a lot to produce. However, experts believe that this will change over the next
or years, and then there will be no more environmental damage caused by cars.
