D. Reading comprehension 4: (0,1 x 5 = 0,5)
Read the passage and answer the questions in A, B,C, D:
Excavations, or "digs" are the most important means by which archaeologists get their information.

By examining aerial photographs, old pictures, maps, documents and landmarks, they make the
decision about where a good place might be to dig. After painstakingly removing layers of soil, often
using small tools, and trowels, they look for artifacts. This process continues until they reach an
undisturbed layer of soil which has no trace of human occupation.
Brushing away the soil that hides an artifact is like brushing away time. The tiny fragments help to
create a more complete picture of the past. Although archaeology is the study of the remains of past
human societies, it is not the same as history. Historians use written records to find out about the past,
whereas archaeologists use the objects they find such as pots, bones, and tools to find out about the
past.
1. According to the passage, all of the following help archaeologists decide
where to dig EXCEPT ______.

4. Which of the following layers would be the one at which archaeologists would stop digging?
A. one with the remains of an 18th century wall
B. a layer of undisturbed soil
C. a layer containing deep cuts

E. Reading comprehension 5: (0,1 x 5 = 0,5)
Read the missing paragraphs A-G and decide where each one fits in the article. Remember
there is one more paragraph than you need.

A Although we had been preparing for her return this autumn, the whole family has been in
confusion. She is closer than ever to her American family. She still loves us, but we are no
longer her primary family and knowing this is terrible.

B Recently I spoke to her on the phone, trying to understand the college arrangements there. She
sounds confused. Her employers did not inform us they were taking on this parental
responsibility and that is worrying.

C This family has broken so many rules of the au pair scheme that I could have my daughter
returned home. But that would only make her hate us. I feel that somewhere she has lost her
own identity, but all we can do is to keep in touch with her, to keep telling her we love her and
that she will always have a home here.

D As we said our goodbyes, she was excited but nervous. For an 18- year-old who had rarely
been away from home, this was an enormous step.

E We had always been a close family, but I wouldn't say that we had been harsh or particularly
possessive parents. We just wanted to see our children grow up to be happy.

F This is more than just the pain of losing the child we love. Many inexperienced 18-year- olds
suffer culture shock when they return home after a year of exciting living. Yet no-one
warns them or their parents about this, and many of them take several months to settle
again.
G During that first year, I lived for her letters. At least she was happy; she had settled quickly and
loved her American family. I had anxious moments, such as when she said that they
were trying to persuade her to stay 'for ever'.

SOMEBODY'S STOLEN MY DAUGHTER
Three years ago, my daughter took her exams, won a university place and decided to take a
year off between leaving school and starting university. She chose to go to America as an au pair and
we saw her off at the airport in August.

1.
“Promise me Granny will still be alive when I get home,” she said seriously as she was about to
board her plane. Then my 10-year-old daughter said what I was thinking secretly: “We might never
see her again,” she said sadly.

2.
She returned for university, but she was different. She reacted badly to being back. She was
cold, hostile and treated us as strangers. She cried over photographs of the children she had cared for
in America, but made hardly any contact with us. Then, in her summer term, she rang to say that she
was returning to America, where she felt she belonged. After a painful summer, she returned to the
US.

9

3.
Now she has found a way to stay there: her employers are paying for her to go to college. She
will live and work with them in return for the fees. I feel they have bought her.

4.
With our daughter it has been even more serious. She was so good at her job that her employers
took a holiday, leaving her alone with three children under three ; so good that during the year she
was back here, they kept asking her to return, saying “We wish you would become a member of our
family.”

5.
Maybe worrying is an understatement. Last week I felt that my daughter wanted to say
something on the phone but she was too tired to express herself clearly. She was sure she wanted to
stay in America. But then she said: “I don’t know. I feel I’m being persuaded by the family here.”

6.

If she starts American college this autumn, she will be 25 when she finishes. She will miss her
brother and sister growing up. I cannot imagine how this will end , but I would hesitate to recommend
this particular au pair scheme to other parents of an inexperienced school-leaver.
