Every year students in many countries learn English. Some of these students are
young children. Others are teenagers. Many are adults. Some learn at school,

Learning another language! Learning English! Why do all these people
want to learn English? It is not difficult to answer that question. Many boys and
girls learn English at school because it is one of their subjects. They study their

many boys and girls study their own language which is English, and Math, and
another language perhaps French, or German, or Spanish.)

There are several things of spoken English that make it difficult for me to
understand. First, many words are not pronounced as they are spelled, so when I
learn new words through reading, I sometimes do not understand them when they
are spoken. Second, native speakers have a wide range of accents. A British
accent is very different from a Texas one. Third, there are a lot of idioms and
slang expressions. These expressions also differ depending on the area a speaker
is from. Finally, there are sounds that do not exist in my native language. These
sounds are difficult for me to distinguish.

English is my mother tongue. Besides, I can speak French and Spanish. I studied
the two languages when I was at high school. Now, I am still learning Spanish at
the University. As for me, mastering a foreign language is not easy. After
studying a language, practice is very necessary and useful. Travelling to the
country where the target language is spoken is very helpful, but if you can not
speak the language well enough you will certainly have troubles. I also frequently
go to the movies, watch television, listen to the radio in the language I am trying
to learn. Reading is another good way to learn. Books are good, but I personally
think newspapers and magazines are better. However, getting some knowledge of
the language is the most important thing. Grammar and vocabulary should be
mastered first.

A recent survey has shown that the busiest shopping street in the world is not in
London. New York, or Paris, but in Warsaw, Poland. Nowy Swiat, which means
New World, has an incredible 14,000 Poles walking down it every hour. It's a

Each nation has many good people who take care of others. For example, some of
high school and college students in the United States often spend many hours as
volunteers in hospitals, orphanages or home for the aged. They read books to the
people in these places, or they just visit them and play games with them or listen
to their problems.
Other young volunteers go and work in the homes of people who are sick or
old. They paint, clean up, or repair their houses, do their shopping or mow their
lawns. For boys who no longer have fathers there is an organization called Big
Brothers. College students and other men take these boys to baseball games or on
fishing trips and help them to get to know things that boys usually learn from

their fathers.

Ordinary houses are full of hazardous waste. The most important hazardous
waste in the homes is batteries. When you throw them out with your other

rain water and other liquids to the bottom of the landfill. Then it can pollute the
natural water in the ground. We should use rechargeable batteries. Another
hazardous water in homes is motor oil. Don’t throw old motor oil on the ground
or throw it on the garbage. It poisons the environment. We should recycle motor
oil. Paint is another kind of hazardous waste in homes. Some cities have a “Paint

Stress is with us all the time. It comes from mental or emotional activity as well
as physical activity. It is unique and personal to each of us. So personal, in fact,
that what may be relaxing to one person may be stressful to another. For
example, if you're a busy executive who likes to keep occupied all of the time,
"taking it easy" at the beach on a beautiful day may feel extremely frustrating,
nonproductive, and upsetting. You may be emotionally distressed from "doing
nothing." Too much emotional stress can cause physical illnesses such as high
blood pressure, ulcers, or even heart disease. Physical stress from work or
exercise is not likely to cause such ailments. The truth is that physical exercise
can help you to relax and to better handle your mental or emotional stress.

smoking, depend on it, and can hardly get rid of it. If they do not smoke for
hours, they will feel a craving for a cigarette. They often chain-smoke that means
they light one cigarette after another. Smoking is often considered anti-social

because many people do not like the smell of cigarettes or the sight of the
smoker's stained fingers and of ash-trays full of cigarette-ends. Above all,
smoking is harmful to health. In many countries, they forbid to advertise
cigarettes and a warning is printed every packet of cigarette that is “Smoking is

Long ago a lot of people thought the moon was a god. Other people thought it
was just a light in the sky. And other thought it was a big ball of cheese!
The telescopes were made. And men saw that the moon was really another world.
They wondered what it was like. They dreamed of going there.
On July 20,1969, that dream came true. Two American men landed on the
moon. Their names were Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin. The first thing the

men found was that the moon is covered with dust. The dust is so thick that the
men left footprints where they walked. Those were the first marks a living thing
had ever made on the moon. And they could stay there for years and years. There
is no wind or rain to wipe them off.
The two men walked on the moon for hours. They picked up rocks to bring
back to earth for study. They dug up dirt to bring back. They set up machines to
find out things people wanted to know. Then they climbed back into their moon
landing craft.
Next day the landing craft roared as the two men took off from the moon. They
joined Michael Collins in the spaceship that waited for them above the moon.
Then they were off on their long trip back to earth. Behind them they left the

Mickey Mouse was not Walt Disney's first successful cartoon creation, but he is
certainly his most famous one. It was on a cross-country train trip from New
York to California in 1927 that Disney first drew the mouse with the ears.
Supposedly, he took his inspiration from the tame field mice that used to scamper
into his old studio in Kansas City. No one is quite sure why he dressed the mouse
in the new familiar shorts with two buttons and gave him the yellow shoes. But
we do know that Disney had intended to call him Mortimer until his wife Lilian
intervened and christened him Mickey Mouse.
Capitalizing on the interest in Charles Lindbergh, Disney planned Mickey's
debut in the short cartoon Plane Crazy, with Minnie as a co-star. In the third
cartoon, Steamboat Willie, Mickey was whistling and singing through the miracle
of the modern soundtrack. By the 1930s, Mickey's image had circled the globe.
He was a superstar at the height of his career.
Although he has received few minor changes throughout his lifetime, most
notably the addition of white gloves and the rounder forms of a more childish
body, he has remained true to his nature since those first cartoons. Mickey is
appealing because he is ice. He may get into trouble, but he takes it on the chin
with a grin. He is both good-natured and resourceful. Perhaps that was Disney's
own image of himself. Why else would he have insisted on doing Mickey's voice
in all the cartoon for twenty years? When interviewed, he would say, "There is a
lot of the mouse in me". And that mouse has remained one of the most pervasive
images in American popular culture.

A new study shows that women can reduce their chances of developing heart
disease by jogging for about three hours every week. The researchers at Harvard
University Medical in Boston have just reported the results of the study on the
New England Journal of Medicine. The study is the first to show the
effectiveness of jogging in the developing of heart disease in women. Only a few
earlier studies have examined the effects of jogging on the heart, but nearly all
have been done on men. The new study involves more than 72,000 women
between the ages of forty and sixty-five during a period of eight years. The

syndrome) treatment and prevention, the problem is getting worse. It has been
reported that about 5 million people became infected with HIV, the virus that
causes AIDS, this year. The disease is expected to kill three million people.
Africa is the worst affected area. The fastest spread of AIDS in the world is
taking place in the Former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. In Russia,
infections rose from about 100 thousand last year to about 300 thousand this year.
