Between 1977 and 1981 , three groups of American women, numbering 27 in all, between the
ages of 35 and 65 , were given month-long tests to determine how they would respond to conditions
resembling those aboard the space shuttle. Though carefully selected from among many applicants ,
the women were volunteers and pay was barely above the minimum wage. They were not allowed to
smoke or drink alcohol during the test, and they were expected to tolerate each other’s company at
close quarters for the entire period. Among other things , they had to stand pressure three times the
force of gravity and carry out both physical and mental tasks while exhausted from strenuous
physical exercise .At the end of ten days they had to spend another 20 days absolutely confined to
bed during which time they suffered backaches and other discomforts , and when they were finally
allowed up, the more physically active women were especially subject to pain due to slight calcium
loss.
Results of the tests suggest that women have significant advantages over men in space. They
need less food and less oxygen and they stand up to radiation better. Men’s advantages in terms of
strength and stamina, meanwhile, are virtually wiped out by the zero-gravity condition in space.

61 For how long was each women tested ?
A 4days B 27 months C 20 days D one month

62 What was the average number of women in each group tested ?
A 9 B 33 C 27 D 50

D after they were subject to unusual pressure

65 The calcium loss particularly affected….
A all the women tested
B those who had been active in the previous 10 days
C those who were generally active
D those who had suffered backaches

66 Which of the following is suggested as being the least useful in space ?
A high resistance in radiation B low food intake
C unusual strength D low oxygen intake

67 The physical advantages men enjoy in normal conditions are counteracted by…
A conditioning B zero gravity C virtue D food and oxygen

68 Which of the following can be inferred from the passage ?
A The test were not carried out aboard the space shuttle
B The women involved had had previous physical fitness training

C The women were tested once a year from 1977 to 1981
D The tests were carried out on women of all ages

Are organically grown foods the best food choices? The advantages claimed for such foods over
conventionally grown foods are now being debated. Advocates of organic foods –a term whose
meaning varies greatly_ frequently proclaim that such foods are safer and more nutritious than
others.
The growing interest of consumers in the safety and nutritional quality of typical North
American diet is a welcome development. However, much of this interest has been sparked by
claims that the food supply is unsafe or inadequate in meeting nutritional needs. Although most of
these claims are not supported by scientific evidence, they make it difficult for the general public to
separate fact from fiction. As a result , claims that eating a diet consisting entirely of organically
grown foods prevents or cures disease or provides other benefits to health have become widely
publicized.
Almost daily the public is besieged by claims for “no-aging” diets , new vitamins, and other
wonder foods. There are numerous unsubstantiated reports that natural vitamins are superior than
synthetic ones, that fertilized eggs are nutritionally superior to unfertilized eggs , that untreated grains
are better than fumigated grains and the like.

One thing that most organically grown food products seem to have in common is that they cost

more than conventionally grown foods. But in many cases consumers are misled if they believe
organic foods can maintain health . So there is real cause for concern if consumers , particularly
those with low incomes , distrust the regular food supply and buy only expensive organic foods.

71 The word “advocates” is closest in meaning to…
A producers B inspectors C proponents D merchants

72 The word “others “ refers to…….
A advantages B advocates C products D organic foods

73 The “welcome development” is an increase in ……
A interest in food safety and nutrition in North Americans
B the nutritional quality of the typical North American diet.
C the amount of healthy food grown in North American
D the number of consumers in North America

74 The word “unsubstantiated” is closest in meaning to….
A unbelievable B uncontested C unverified D unpopular

75 The word “maintain” is closest in meaning to….
A improve B preserve C restore D contain

76 The word “those” refers to…
A organic foods B conventional foods C consumers D reporters

77 According to the 1
st
paragraph which of the following is true about organic foods ?
A It is accepted by most nutritionists B It has been used only in recent years
C It has no fixed meaning D It is seldom used by consumers

78 According to the last paragraph consumers who believe that organic foods are better are often

A careless B mistaken C thrifty D wealthy

79 The author implies that there is cause for concern if consumers with limited incomes buy only
organic foods instead of conventionally grown foods because…
A organic foods can be more expensive but are often no better than conventionally grown foods
B many organic foods are actually less nutritious than similar conventionally grown foods
C conventionally grown foods are more readily available than organic foods
D too many farmers will stop using conventional methods to grow food crops

80 What is the author’s attitude about the claims made by advocates of health foods ?
A Very enthusiastic B Skeptical C Neutral D Somewhat favorable

correct answer for each of the blanks fron 36 to 45.
Many parents believe that they should begin to teach their children to read when they are (36)

more than toddlers. This is fine if the child shows a real interest but forcing a child could be counter-
productive if she isn’t ready. Wise parents will have a (37) attitude and take the lead from their

child. What they should provide is a selection of (38) toys, books and other activities.
Nowadays there is plenty of good (39) available for young children, and of course, seeing
plenty of books in use about the house will also (40) them to read.
Of course, books are no longer the only source of stories and information. There is also a huge
range of videos, which can reinforce and extend the pleasure a child finds in a book and are (41)
valuable in helping to increase vocabulary and concentration. Television gets a bad review as far as
children are concerned, mainly because too many spend too much time watching programmers not
intended for their age (42) . Too many television programmes induce an incurious, uncritical
attitude that is going to make learning much more difficult. However, (43) viewing of progrmmes
designed for young children can be useful. Just as adults enjoy reading a book after seeing it
serialised on television, so children will pounce on books which (44) their favourite television
characters, and videos can add a new (45) to a story known from a book.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions from 46 to 55.
Herman Melville, an American author best known today for his novel Moby Dick, was actually

more popular during his lifetime for some of his other works. He traveled extensively and used the
knowledge gained during his travels as the basis for his early novels. In 1837, at the age of eighteen,
Melville signed as a cabin boy on a merchant ship that was to sail from his Massachusetts home to
Livepool, England. His experiences on this trip served as a basic for the novel Redburn (1849). In
1841, Melville set out on a whaling ship headed for the South Seas. After jumping ship in Tahiti, he
wandered around the islands of Tahiti and Moorea. This South Sea island sojourn was a backdrop to
the novel Omoo (1847). After three years away from home, Melville joined up with a U.S. naval

frigate that was returning to the eastern United States around Cape Horn. The novel White Jacket
(1850) describes this lengthy voyage as a navy seaman.
With the publication of these early adventure novels, Melville developed a strong and loyal
following among readers eager for his tales of exotic places and situations. However, in 1851, with
the publication of Moby Dick, Melville’s popularity started to diminish. Moby Dick, on one level the
saga of the hunt for the great white whale, was also a heavily symbolic allegory of the heroic struggle
of humanity against the universe. The public was not ready for Melville’s literary metamorphosis
from romantic adventure to philosophical symbolism. It is ironic that the novel that served to
diminish Meville’s popularity during his lifetime is the one for which he is best known today.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each the questions from 56 to 65
An air pollutant is defined as a compound added directly or indirectly by human to the
atmosphere in such quantities as to affect humans, animals, vegetation, or materials adversely. Air
pollution requires a very flexible definition that permits continuous change. When the first air
pollution laws were established in England in the fourteenth century, air pollutants were limited to
compounds that could be seen or smelled – a far cry from the extensive list of harmful substances
known today. As technology has developed and knowledge of the health aspects of various
chemicals has increased, the list of air pollutants has lengthened. In the future, even water vapor
might be considered an air pollutant under certain conditions.
Many of the more important air pollutants, such as sulfur oxides, carbon monoxide, and

nitrogen oxides, are found in nature. As the Earth developed, the concentration of these pollutants
was altered by various chemical reactions; they became components in biogeochemical cycles.
These serve as an air purification scheme by allowing the compounds to move from the air to the
water or soil. On a global basic, nature’s output of these compounds dwarfs that resulting from
human activities.
However, human production usually occurs in a localized area, such as a city. In such a
region, human output may be dominant and may temporarily overload the natural purification scheme
of the cycles. The result is an increased concentration of noxious chemicals in the air. The
concentrations at which the adverse effects appear will be greater than the concentrations that the
pollutants would have in the absence of human activities. The actual concentration need not be large
for a substance to be a pollutant; in fact, the numerical value tells us little until we know how much of
an increase this represents over the concentration that would occur naturally in the area. For
example, sulfur dioxide has detectable health effects at 0.08 parts per million (ppm), which is about

400 times its natural level. Carbon monoxide, however, has a natural level of 0.1 ppm and is not
usually a pollutant until its level reaches about 15ppm.
