Edward is entering a university and has to decide what foreign language to study,

since he needs 12 credits to graduate. He studied Japanese by himself in high school and
even had a chance to use some for it when he took a trip to Tokyo . He enjoyed his trip

The reason why the university requires students to study a foreign language is that
