730 Chapter 14 Working with a Tablet PC
Practice 1 involves configuring an action for when the lid is closed, and you cannot configure
this option on a desktop or virtual computer. You can still perform the rest of this practice if
you do not have access to a laptop computer.
 Practice 1: Setting and Modifying the Power Saver Plan
In this practice, you will configure a computer to use the Power Saver power plan and then
modify that plan to ensure that the display is only turned off after five minutes rather than
three and that shutting the lid does nothing except send the computer into hibernation. To
complete the practice, perform the following steps:
1. Log on to Windows Vista with a user account that is a member of the local administra-
tors group.
2. From the Start menu, open the Control Panel in Classic View.
3. Open the Power Options item.
4. Set the Preferred Plan to Power Saver.
5. Click Change Plan Settings.
6. Change the Turn Off The Display drop-down value under the On Battery Category to 5
minutes. Click Save Changes.
7. In the Power Options dialog box, click Choose What Closing The Lid Does.
8. Change the When I Close The Lid under the On Battery category to Do Nothing. Click
Save Changes.
 Practice 2: Configuring Advanced Power Plan Settings
In this practice, you will configure the Advanced settings of the Balanced Power Options Plan.
Advanced settings give a finer level of control than the basic plan settings. In this plan, you will
configure the wireless adapter power settings, search and indexing settings, and battery
actions. To complete the practice, perform the following steps:
1. Log on to Windows Vista with a user account that is a member of the local administra-
tors group.
2. From the Start menu, open the Control Panel in Classic View.
3. Open the Power Options item.
4. Set the Preferred Plan to Balanced.
5. Under Balanced, click Change Plan Settings.

6. In the Change Settings For The Plan: Balanced dialog box, click the Change Advanced
Power Settings text.
7. In the Power Options dialog box, scroll down, and expand the Wireless Adapter Set-
tings. Change the On Battery setting from Maximum Performance to Medium Power Sav-
ing.
8. Scroll further down to Search And Indexing. Expand this node, and change the On Bat-
tery setting from Balanced to Power Saver.
Lesson 2: Configuring Power Options 731
9. Navigate down to the bottom of the Power Options Advanced Settings dialog box, and
expand the Battery node. Expand the Low Battery Level, and raise the On Battery figure
from 10% to 15%.
10. Click OK to close the dialog box, and then click Save Changes.
 Practice 3: Creating a Custom Power Plan
In this practice, you will create your own power plan. To complete the practice, perform the fol-
lowing steps:
1. Log on to Windows Vista with a user account that is a member of the local administra-
tors group.
2. From the Start menu, open the Control Panel in Classic View.
3. Open the Power Options item.
4. Click Create A Power Plan. On the Create A Power Plan page, select Power Saver, and
enter the plan name as Power Saver II. Click Next.
5. In the Change Settings For The Plan: Power Saver II, configure the settings to never turn
off the display or put the computer to sleep if the computer is plugged in, as shown in
Figure 14-23. Click Create to create the plan.
Figure 14-23 Changing settings for a custom power plan
6. Verify that the Power Saver II plan is now being used.
7. To restore your computer to its default power saver configuration, select the Balanced
plan. Click Change Plan Settings, and then click Restore Default Settings For This Plan.

Lesson Summary

■ Power plans control how hardware features work and are primarily used with mobile
computers to vary the drain on battery charge.
■ Power plans can also control when a computer shuts down or hibernates due to inactiv-
ity. Power plans can also be used to customize the behavior of power and hibernation
buttons.
■ The default power plans are Balanced, Power Saver, and High Performance.
■ Away mode is a specific configuration that allows a media center extender to wake a
media center computer.
■ Custom power plans allow specialized power settings to be stored.
■ Editing the advanced power settings allows power plans to be configured with greater
detail. Users need to be able to elevate their privileges in order to edit the advanced
power settings.

Case Scenarios
In the following case scenarios, you will apply what you have learned about configuring appli-
cations included with Windows Vista. You can find answers to these questions in the
“Answers” section at the end of this book.
Case Scenario 1: Tablet PCs at Tailspin Toys
All the executives at Tailspin Toys have Tablet PC computers running Windows Vista Ulti-
mate. They use the Tablet PC computers for meetings and conferences. All the Tablet PC com-
puters are convertible, which gives the executives the greatest amount of flexibility. Because
the executives are now experienced users, you have been asked to provide some tips on how
they might use their Tablet PCs more efficiently.
1. Several of the executives are left-handed. How can you optimize their experience?
2. Several executives want to speed up the editing of their documents while in slate mode.
Specifically, they want to be able to quickly copy and paste data. What steps can you take
to help them?
3. The company’s CEO has just been given a brand new Windows Vista Tablet PC. She is
concerned that she will have to teach the computer how to read her handwriting again.
How can you ensure that the new computer will recognize her handwriting as well as the
old one does?
Case Scenario 2: Individualized Power Plans
Five people in the research and development division of Wingtip Toys use Windows Vista lap-

top computers. Each of them has different requirements with regard to performance and bat-
tery life. Kim almost always has her laptop plugged into an AC outlet, Ian spends a fair amount
of time in meetings with his computer, and Orin likes to go to the park as often as he can and
work there.
1. Ian uses his laptop to read the morning news and then drives to work at Wingtip Toys.
He takes 45 minutes to commute and wants to quickly restart using the laptop when he
arrives at work with a minimal impact on the battery charge. Which of the following
power down modes should he use?
2. Which of the default power plans would best suit Kim given what you know about her
computer usage habits?
3. Orin has some special requirements. Given his usage habits, which of the default power
plans would you use as the basis for creating a custom power plan for his computer?

Vista?”
B. Incorrect: The User State Migration Tool is used to transfer files and settings from
one computer to another. It cannot be used to determine whether an application
will run under Windows Vista.
C. Correct: The Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor can identify applications that are
known to have problems running under Windows Vista.
D. Incorrect: Windows Anytime Upgrade cannot be used to detect possible applica-
tion compatibility issues.
4. Correct Answer: B
A. Incorrect: If the computer has the Windows Vista Capable logo attached, it has
enough RAM to run Windows Vista.
B. Correct: Given the customer’s use of digital videos, it is likely that the upgrade has
failed because of a lack of free space on the volume. There needs to be at least 11
GB free to upgrade Windows XP to Windows Vista.
C. Incorrect: A laptop that has the Windows Vista Capable logo attached will have a
graphics adapter that has a WDDM driver.
D. Incorrect: Although you cannot use Windows Anytime Upgrade without acti-
vating your copy of Windows Vista, it is possible to upgrade Windows XP to
Windows Vista without activating the software.
Lesson 2
1. Correct Answers: A and D
A. Correct: Windows Vista Home Basic can be upgraded only to Home Premium and
Ultimate editions.
B. Incorrect: Windows Vista Home Basic cannot be upgraded to the Business edi-
tion. Windows Vista Home Basic can be upgraded only to Home Premium and

Ultimate editions.
C. Incorrect: Windows Vista Home Basic cannot be upgraded to the Enterprise edi-
tion. Windows Vista Home Basic can be upgraded only to Home Premium and
Ultimate editions.
D. Correct: Windows Vista Home Basic can be upgraded to the Ultimate edition.
2. Correct Answer: B
A. Incorrect: The new edition of Windows Vista that you want to upgrade to is pur-
chased during the Windows Anytime Upgrade process, not prior to it.
744 Answers
B. Correct: It is possible to run Windows Anytime Upgrade only if your current edi-
tion of Windows Vista has been activated.
C. Incorrect: It is not necessary to run the Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor prior to
running Windows Anytime Upgrade. Any program that works on one edition of
Windows Vista will work on another edition of Windows Vista, as long as both edi-
tions are of the same processor architecture.
D. Incorrect: It is not necessary to install MSXML version 6 or .NET Framework ver-
sion 2.0 or higher to run Windows Anytime Upgrade.
3. Correct Answer: B
A. Incorrect: Windows Vista Business cannot be upgraded to Windows Vista
Home Premium. Only Windows Vista Ultimate has Tablet PC and Media Center
functionality.
B. Correct: Only Windows Vista Ultimate has Tablet PC and Media Center functionality.
C. Incorrect: Only Windows Vista Ultimate, not Enterprise, has Tablet PC and Media
Center functionality.
D. Incorrect: Windows Vista Business cannot be upgraded to Windows Vista Home
Basic.
Lesson 3
1. Correct Answer: A
A. Correct: System restore points are automatically created whenever a new applica-
tion or device driver software is installed. This means that you can return the com-

puter to the state it was in prior to installing the application by using the restore
point taken at that point in time.
B. Incorrect: A startup repair will not work in this circumstance because the startup
files are not missing or corrupted.
C. Incorrect: Running the command prompt will not solve this problem. It is not pos-
sible to return a computer to the point at which it was prior to the installation of an
application using the command prompt. Although it is possible to delete applica-
tion files, things such as registry settings are impossible to manually modify from
the command prompt.
D. Incorrect: Although a Windows Complete PC Restore might work, nothing was
mentioned in the question about a full backup of the entire computer being taken.
A full backup is required prior to performing this action, whereas a restore point is
automatically created prior to the installation of any application or device driver
software.
Answers 745
2. Correct Answer: A
A. Correct: Startup Repair should be your first port of call with any startup problem
encountered by a computer running Windows Vista.
B. Incorrect: You should try Startup Repair first. System Restore is generally used to
roll back configurations rather than to repair them.
C. Incorrect: You should try Startup Repair first. Windows Complete PC Restore is
used when a computer’s operating system has been lost, and you want to rebuild it.
D. Incorrect: You should try Startup Repair first because a memory problem would
not manifest itself in this way. If the memory problem were serious, the computer
would not be able to get past the POST test. If there were a minor error in the RAM,
it would likely not become apparent until after the computer had booted.
3. Correct Answer: D
A. Incorrect: The problem is not with compatibility mode but with the program’s
way of using administrative rights conflicting with Windows Vista’s User Account
Control.

B. Incorrect: No problems were reported with the application’s display, so this
answer is incorrect.
C. Incorrect: No problems were reported with the application’s display, so this
answer is incorrect.
D. Correct: Older programs, especially those written for Windows 95, 98, and Me,
sometimes expect that every user who runs them is an administrator. This can
cause problems with the User Account Control system in Windows Vista. One
solution is to configure the application to run as an administrator. You still need to
be an administrator to execute it, but this technique bypasses some of the prob-
lems older programs have with User Account Control.
Chapter 2: Case Scenario Answers
Case Scenario 1: Upgrading and Migrating
1. Migration. Windows 2000 cannot be upgraded to Windows Vista. SKU choice: Windows
Vista Home Premium. Computer is capable of running Aero. DVD playback hints that
Media Center functionality. Home Basic does not provide Aero or Media Center.
2. Upgrade. Windows Vista Business would best suit this customer. The customer does not
need Enterprise features such as BitLocker and Virtual PC. Business edition supports
direct upgrade from Windows XP Tablet PC. The computer has enough free space to
allow upgrade.
746 Answers
3. Upgrade. Windows Vista Home Basic. The couple does not appear to need Aero, nor do
they need features such as Media Center or BitLocker.
Case Scenario 2: Troubleshooting
1. You should use the Windows Memory Diagnostic to check that the computer’s physical
memory has no errors. Physical memory errors often manifest as unusual freezes that
require a reboot to undo.
2. You should use Startup Repair. Startup Repair fixes the most common problems that
stop a Windows Vista computer from booting properly.
3. You can use the command prompt option to copy the corrupted files from the Windows
Vista installation media.

Chapter 3: Lesson Review Answers
Lesson 1
1. Correct Answer: C
A. Incorrect: If the problem was refresh rate, the complaint would be about flickering
rather than a blurry or blocky display.
B. Incorrect: If the problem was the number of colors, the complaint would be color-
related rather than a blurry or blocky display.
C. Correct: Laptop computers use LCD screens, which should always be set to their
native resolution. If an LCD screen is set to a resolution other than its native one,
the display appears blurry and blocky.
D. Incorrect: Monitors are not incompatible with operating systems. Windows Vista
displays on any monitor that supports the Video Graphics Adapter (VGA) stan-
dard.
2. Correct Answers: C and D
A. Incorrect: The Device Manager is helpful only if a device is incorrectly config-
ured. It does not help you determine which device or software is causing system
instability.
B. Incorrect: The Add New Hardware Wizard is used to add legacy hardware to a
computer running Windows Vista. It cannot help you diagnose which component
is causing system instability.
C. Correct: The Problem Reports And Solutions log might give you an idea of what
device failed, although the Reliability Monitor graph might help you more quickly
zero in on when the problems began to arise.
Answers 747
D. Correct: The Reliability Monitor graph is helpful because it will show a sharp dip
when the offending component or software was installed.
3. Correct Answer: C
A. Incorrect: Adjusting the number of colors displayed will not stop a monitor from
flickering. The amount a monitor flickers is determined by its refresh rate.
B. Incorrect: Although some people get headaches from squinting at monitors that

are configured to use too high a resolution, monitor flickering is caused by the
refresh rate setting.
C. Correct: Adjusting the monitor’s refresh rate will reduce the amount of screen
flicker. Some people can get headaches from using monitors that are set to use
lower refresh rates.
D. Incorrect: The color management settings ensure that the image on the screen
matches the image output to other devices, such as printers. Altering the color
management settings will not change how much a monitor flickers.
4. Correct Answer: B
A. Incorrect: Changing the number of colors from 32-bit to 16-bit will not mean that
the colors displayed on the screen will match those output by the printer. The only
way to ensure a match is by using the Color Management utility.
B. Correct: The Color Management utility is designed to ensure that all devices con-
nected to a Windows Vista computer, such as printers and monitors, output the
same set of colors. Because the number of colors a printer outputs is usually less
than what is possible for a monitor to output, using Color Management means
reducing the number of colors displayed on the screen. The benefit is that what is
output on the screen will match what is output on the printer.
C. Incorrect: Changing the refresh rate on the monitor reduces or increases the
amount of flicker that is perceptible to the eye. It will not ensure that the color dis-
played on the screen matches the color output on the printer.
D. Incorrect: Changing the resolution changes the amount of information displayed
on the screen. It will not ensure that the color displayed on the screen matches the
color output on the printer.
5. Correct Answer: D
A. Incorrect: Unless the device is in Device Manager, it is not possible to install the
drivers manually.
B. Incorrect: Unless the device is already in Device Manager, it is not possible to man-
ually configure the hardware resources the device uses.
C. Incorrect: Scan For Hardware Changes will detect plug and play devices. This

hardware component is a non-plug and play, also known as legacy, device.
748 Answers
D. Correct: Because this component is non-plug and play, it needs to be installed by
using the Add Legacy Hardware command in the Device Manager.
6. Correct Answer: D
A. Incorrect: Because the device is critical, you should try altering the resource set-
tings before disabling the device.
B. Incorrect: Because the device is critical, you should try altering the resource set-
tings before uninstalling the driver. Uninstalling the driver is a good option to pur-
sue when you have an alternative driver, but you are unable to update the one that
is currently being used.
C. Incorrect: Because the device is critical, you should try altering the resource set-
tings before uninstalling the device.
D. Correct: You should try to alter the resources that the device uses to see if that
resolves the conflict.
Lesson 2
1. Correct Answer: D
A. Incorrect: Because Aero has functioned in the past on this computer, a WDDM
graphics driver is already installed.
B. Incorrect: When a user changes a theme, it applies only to that user’s account. The
only way that your account’s theme can be forcibly changed is if another user has
disabled Aero by changing the number of colors displayed. It is possible for
another user to do this without administrative permissions.
C. Incorrect: Changing the monitor refresh rate will not force Aero to stop working.
D. Correct: The only way that your account’s theme can be forcibly changed is if
another user has disabled Aero by changing the number of colors displayed. It is
possible for another user to do this without administrative permissions. Returning
the number of colors displayed back to 32-bit will restore Aero.

Lesson 1
1. Correct Answer: C
A. Incorrect: You are either logged on with an administrator account or have sup-
plied administrator credentials; otherwise, you could not have accessed this dialog
box. You do not need to switch accounts.
B. Incorrect: Using the New User dialog box creates a standard account by default.
C. Correct: If you clear the User Must Change Password At Next Logon check box,
this activates the User Cannot Change Password and the Password Never Expires
check boxes, and you can then select them.
D. Incorrect: M.Hanson is a valid user name. Changing this to Mark_Hanson has no
effect on the check boxes.
2. Correct Answer: D
A. Incorrect: This solves the problem for the particular bulletin board site, but you
would need to add other bulletin board and educational sites to the list. This
involves additional administrative effort.
B. Incorrect: Content Advisor ratings apply to all users, including the administrator
account that you created during installation.
C. Incorrect: You know that this particular site contains no offensive content. This
setting enables you to access bulletin board and discussion sites where strong lan-
guage is permitted. In this instance, this is not the case.

D. Correct: Some bulletin board and technical information sites have no ratings spec-
ified. Changing the configuration of Content Advisor as described enables access
to such sites.
3. Correct Answer: A
A. Correct: No direct method exists for blocking card games specifically. The EVERY-
ONE classification is deemed suitable for a child of seven, but you need to block
any card games that meet this classification. You do this in the Game Overrides dia-
log box.
B. Incorrect: You block specified games in the Game Overrides dialog box, not the
Game Restrictions dialog box.
C. Incorrect: You specify a rating classification in the Game Restrictions dialog box,
not the Game Overrides dialog box.
D. Incorrect: The EVERYONE 10+ classification is suitable for children aged 10 years
and older. It does not block card games.

4. Correct Answer: B
A. Incorrect: This procedure blocks every program except the ones you want to
block.
B. Correct: This selects all programs in the list so that the child can run them. Clear-
ing the check boxes for specific programs blocks them.
C. Incorrect: This works, but it is much easier to clear three specific programs than to
select every program except these three.
D. Incorrect: The Browse button is used to add programs to the list and is typically
used when you have installed new applications on the computer. Right-clicking an
executable file does not enable you to block it.
5. Correct Answers: A and E
A. Correct: This is the recommended procedure for accessing the User Controls dia-
log box.
B. Incorrect: You use the supervisor password when reconfiguring Content Advisor
or allowing Internet access to sites that Content Advisor blocks. It is not required

to configure Parental Controls.
C. Incorrect: Right-clicking an account in the Users container enables you to delete it,
rename it, change group membership, reset the password, or change password
properties. It does not permit you to set Parental Controls.
D. Incorrect: This is an alternative procedure for accessing a user account in the
Users container. It does not permit you to set Parental Controls.
E. Correct: You can access the User Controls dialog box by using this procedure. The
procedure requires more steps than are listed in answer A, but the question asks
whether the procedure works, not whether it is the most efficient.
6. Correct Answer: D
A. Incorrect: You might be able to achieve the appropriate level of safety by choosing
Custom and blocking every category of unacceptable content. However, not all
content in these areas can be automatically blocked. You should instead specify the
High restriction level that permits access only to websites approved for children.
B. Incorrect: A restriction level of None does not automatically block any content.
C. Incorrect: A Medium restriction level blocks unratable content, mature content,
pornography, drugs, hate speech, and weapons. However, not all content in these
areas can be automatically blocked. This rating lets older children explore the web
in relative safety but is not considered suitable for a six-year-old.
D. Correct: A High restriction level permits access only to websites approved for
children.

A. Incorrect: You do not need a third-party aggregator. IE7+ provides built-in aggre-
gator functions.
B. Correct: IE7+ provides built-in aggregator functions that do what you require.
C. Incorrect: A search aggregator returns an up-to-date set of search results. This is
not what you require.
D. Incorrect: IE7+ does not implement Clouds.

2. Correct Answer: C
A. Incorrect: If you click the View Full Width button, you cannot access the controls
for adjusting the margin. In any case, dragging provides a quick but inaccurate
method of adjusting the margins. If you want to specify accurate margin sizes, you
need to use the Page Setup dialog box.
B. Incorrect: You cannot type margin sizes into the Print Preview dialog box. You
need first to click the Page Setup button in Print Preview. Alternatively, you can
access Page Setup directly from IE7+. Clicking the View Full Page button does not
affect this.
C. Correct: You can specify accurate margin sizes in the Page Setup dialog box.
D. Incorrect: Dragging the margin symbols provides a quick method of adjusting
margins. However, if you want to specify accurate margin sizes, you need to use the
Page Setup dialog box.
3. Correct Answer: A

at the end. Also, it prints the footer right-justified rather than center-justified.
4. Correct Answer: D

a search provider. You cannot use it to add a search provider.
B. Incorrect: This is an alternative method of accessing the Change Search Defaults
dialog box. This dialog box lets you set the default search provider or delete a
search provider. You cannot use it to add a search provider.

Providers to Internet Explorer 7) to your favorites list. It does not let you add a
search provider.

D. Correct: This procedure adds the search provider to your search providers list.
Chapter 4: Case Scenario Answers
Case Scenario 1: Advising Users on How to Configure Parental
Controls
1. For the 6-year-old, the customer should block all games that have no rating and specify
the EVERYONE rating. For the 11-year-old, he should block all games that have no rating
and specify the EVERYONE 10+ rating. For the 15-year-old, he should specify the TEEN
rating. He could probably allow his oldest child to play games that have no rating, but
you should advise him to enable activity reporting and periodically check what his chil-
dren are accessing. For all three children, he should block Blood and Gore, Fantasy Vio-
lence, Violence, and Intense Violence. He probably does not need to block Mild
Violence, but this is a judgment call.
2. You should advise the customer to enable Content Advisor and block all sites that do not
have a rating. Educational and bulletin board sites are often unrated. She can then use
the supervisor password that she creates if she wants to allow her son to access an
unrated site.
3. You need to remind the user that Child Can Only Use The Programs I Allow means just
that. The child cannot use any programs that are not part of the operating system—
including Microsoft Office programs such as Word—unless the parent specifically allows
access to them. He should select the check box next to WINWORD.EXE and probably
EXCEL.EXE, as well.
Case Scenario 2: Printing Webpages
1. She should access Print Preview. At the top of the Print Preview window, she should see
a drop-down list (to the right of the Page View box). The list probably has As Laid Out
On Screen selected. In this box, she should select All Frames Individually.
2. He should select Shrink To Fit rather than 100%. The Shrink To Fit setting adjusts the
print size so that the webpage fits on the paper and adjusts the bottom margin so that
single lines at the bottom of pages (orphans) are moved to the next page.
3. She should switch to single page view, select to view the full page, and then manually
adjust her margins by dragging the margin symbols. When she is satisfied with the first

page, she should then view all the other pages and make sure she is happy with them.

You should remind her that a margin change made on any page affects all pages, so if she
makes any changes, she needs to check all the pages again.

Chapter 5: Lesson Review Answers
Lesson 1
1. Correct Answer: B
A. Incorrect: He cannot open an application until he closes the UAC dialog box by
clicking either Cancel or Continue.
B. Correct: By default, Secure Desktop is enabled. This means that the computer can-
not perform any operation, including Print Screen, until you close the UAC dialog
box.
C. Incorrect: By default, UAC applies to all administrator accounts except the dis-
abled built-in Administrator account.
D. Incorrect: The account Ian created when he installed Windows Vista is an ordi-
nary administrator account. It is not the built-in Administrator account.
2. Correct Answer: A
A. Correct: This setting causes administrator accounts to run continuously with ele-
vated privileges. Standard accounts cannot supply administrator permissions to
run administrator tasks. This is legacy Windows XP mode, and UAC is disabled.
B. Incorrect: This is the default setting. UAC is enabled.
C. Incorrect: This setting permits an administrator to perform a task that requires
elevated privileges to do it without being prompted. However, the administrator
account runs as a standard user account except when performing an administrator
task, and the user experience of the standard user is unaffected. UAC is not, there-
fore, disabled.
D. Incorrect: This setting increases UAC security by requiring administrators to pro-
vide credentials every time they perform tasks that require elevated privileges.
3. Correct Answer: D

A. Incorrect: This setting prevents unsigned application files from running. However,
legacy files that attempt to write to protected parts of the registry or file system are
not necessarily unsigned.
B. Incorrect: This is the default setting. It allows unsigned files to run, although it
gives a warning. It does not affect legacy files that attempt to write to protected
parts of the registry or file system.
