rpose/1ntroduction
Purpos
ellnlroduclion
The purpose of this activity book is to provide teachers and students with a
wi
de range of
challengi
ng
and motivational vocabulary activities that arc different
and
fun to do. Theso activi·
ties are intended to
be
used by themselves
or
to complement existing language programs by
providing activities that win require sludents
to
work independently or with a partner to problem·
solve, learn and apply strategies, think, and have fun.
Since sludents enjoy solving puzzles and decoding messages, many of the challenges
provide the students with an opportunity to do this. Blank templates wi
ll
be provided for some of
Ihe activities to give students the tools
they'll need
to
create their own challenges to sharo with
their classmates.
Most of the challenges have from six

to
eight activity sheets.
As
students tackle the lirst
or
second sheet, strategies are being developed and the students
aCQuire
an understanding 01
what is expected in each challenge. Similarly, when the activity is laken up, the students may
also learn strategies that
fellow classmates used to get the answers to somo
of
the questions.
As a result, each subsequent
challenge becomes that much easie
r.
These puzzles are vocabulary·building challenges that are presented in a variety of
creative and innovative ways. As students
WOf1o;
10 solve the puzzles and find the hidden mes·
sages, they are learning new and
olte
n unusual words. The messages found in the Pair
01
Diamonds activities pertain to special times Ih
roughoutthe
year.
For
example: "Merry Christ·
mas and happy New Year to all

."
The Combination Puzzle is a multi·task activity because
students are required to match up
three-fetter portions
01
wordS to create
t2
six-Iettor words.
These words are then used
to
complete 12 analogous relationships. The Clues Galore and
Fewer
Clues exercises help students build vocabulary by
fi
rst coming
up
with the answers to
the clues
and
l
he
n usi
ng
those cluos to reveal a
new
nlne·lener word. Messages in the Zig·Zag
Topics puzzles
are found by readi
ng
down Ihe shaded boxes alter students have written in the

answers to the clues. The Lasl
letter
·First
leiter
puzzles are similar to crossword puzzles,
except that the last letter of each clue Is also the first l
eller
of the next clue. Hidden words are
found by taking the
le
tters from the shaded boxes and lilling in the message boxes. In t
he
Reveal a Pallodrome section students complete several live·letter words and then decode the
palindrome sentences. In the Four-Squared puzzles, students write in
th
e answers to clues and
then read
down
or
up
the shaded boxes to reveal a message. The Back
and
Forth puzzles
challenge students to
lind six·lener words that fit
in
the puzzles
in
a special
way.

The last three
fetters of an answer become the Hrstthree
lellers of Ihe next answer and so on. The Acrostic
puzzles locus students on finding antonyms
and synonyms to wordS given. Then students must
decode the puzzle to lind the hidden message. Messages in the SplilU
le
Diamond puzzlos are
found by reading
down the shaded boxes aher students find the answers to all the clues. Words
with specific
lellar combinations are needed to complete t
he
Wo
rd Game puzzles.
Students can
be motivated to do just about anything. Once they have worked on a par-
ticular kind of activity and have gained some confidonce in doing it, some may be ready for a
challenge (this
Is where the blank lemplates come
in
to play). With encouragement and direc·
tion, students
ca
n successfully create and share Similar challenges with their classmateS. Their
ability
to
stick to the task and
seD
it through to completion is very rewarding to the teacher and

student alike. Simply
seeing the names
01
their friends on an activity sheet Is all the motivation
Ihal is required
to
get others to try their hand at crealing an activity.
