and you'll see. Australia is far to the south, way down under almost everything else! Australia lies
between the South Pacific Ocean and the Indian Ocean. Like an island, it is surrounded by water.
But Australia is too large to be called an island. Instead, it is considered the world's smallest
continent. In fact, Australia is the only country that takes up an entire continent.

Australia is famous for its many unusual animals. If you visit, you might see a kangaroo hop
past. Kangaroos use their powerful hint legs to hop at speeds up to 30 miles per hour (48 km/h)! If
you look up in a eucalyptus tree, you might see a koala happily munching on leaves. Koalas
resemble small bears, but they are not related to bears.
Most of Australia's people have British ancestors. Australia still keeps some ties to Britain, and
many British customs remain popular. Like British, Australian love to drink tea. They drive their
car on the left-hand side of the road. As people do in Britain. The Australian flag even has a Union
Jack, a famous British symbol.

they fold up their tents, put them on their camels and donkeys, and move to another place. In good years,

Read the passage and choose one correct answer for each question:
The nuclear family, consisting of a mother, father, and their children may be more an
American ideal than an American reality. Of course, the so-called traditional American
family was always more varied than we had been led to believe, reflecting the very different
racial, ethnic, class, and religious customs among different American groups.
The most recent government statistics reveal that only about one third of all current

either have no children or have none still living at home. Of the final one third, about 20
percent of the total number of American households is single people, usually women over

sixty-five years of age. A small percentage, about 3 percent of the total, consists of
unmarried people who choose to live together; and the rest, about 7 percent, are single,

One species has become extinct in each year of this century. But many hundreds are now in danger. Lack of

Already many kinds of wild animals has been so reduced in number that their role in the ecosystem is forgotten.
Animals like the great apes, the whales, seals etc. thought to be in danger of extinction.

But even more important, perhaps than individual kinds of animals and plants, whole habitats are in danger of
vanishing: marshes are being drained, and the world forests, especially tropical forests are being cut down to
satisfy man’s needs of timber and paper.
What would our world be like if all the wild animals and wild plants vanished?- Would our life still exist then?
