I. Objectives:
By the end of the lesson, students are able to:
- develop the listening micro-skill of intensive listening for specific
information.
- give their own opinion about the similarities and differences
between New Year holiday in Vietnam and Japan.
II. Anticipated problems :
PROBLEMS SOLUTIONS
Ss cannot catch the difficult
phrases from listening at first
time.
T may play the tape one more
time for Ss to catch the
difficult phrases.
Some Ss can’t complete the
task at the first time they listen.
T might want to let Ss to listen
one more time and pause at the
answers for them to catch.

I. Warm-up :Guessing game
- T divides class into 2 groups : A &
B.
- Rule of the game: Each group
sends a representative to play the
game. He or she will go and stand in
the front of the class with their back
facing the board. T will write a
word/phrase which was learnt from
the previous lesson on the board.
Other Ss from each group have to
explain the word without
mentioning it or translating it into
Vietnamese so that their
representative can guess the word.
The student with the quickest and
correct answer will get 1 point for
their group. Ss take turn to be the
representative. After some turns, the
group with more points will be the
T↔SS
SS↔SS
winner.
-Ss listen to the rule and play the
game together.
Words / phrase: Thanksgiving, Mid-
autumn festival, grand, pray,

agrarian, lucky money
- T introduces the listening passage:
Today you are going to listen to 2
people talking about how the New
Year is celebrated in Japan . Before
you listen, do the task on page 94.
- T asks Ss to work in pairs to guess
which of the activities on page 94
the Japanese often do on their New
Year’s Day.
- T calls some Ss to give their
answers and write them on the
boards.
Pre-teaching vocabulary
- T helps Ss to pronounce the words
given in the book.
-T reads aloud first and asks Ss to
repeat in chorus and individually.
- T elicits some words taken from
the listening passage:
Shrine: a place where people come
to worship because it is connected
with a holy person or event(đền thờ)
Longevity: long life(tuổi thọ)
+ synonym of “ longlife”
Pine trees: (cây thông) What is this
tree called?
Constancy: (bền lòng, kiên định)
How can I say “ sự kiên định” in
English?

To represent: to be a symbol of sth
(tượng trưng cho)
- T may get Ss to make sentences
with the words and gives corrective
feedback.

TASK 1
Instruction: You are going to listen
to 2 people talking about how the
New Year is celebrated in Japan.
Listen and tick the things you hear.
- Before Ss listen and do the task, T
asks them to read through the
statements.
-Ss read through the statements.
-Then T instructs them to use some
strategies to do the task:
+ First, read through the statements
to understand them and underline
key words. For example, the key
words in the first statement are : put
T↔SS
SS↔SS
on, special, clothes
+ Listen to the tape and pay
attention to the key words
+ Tick the things they hear in the

appropriate boxes.
- T plays the tape once for Ss to do
the task
-Ss listen to the tape and find the
answers.
- T asks for Ss’ answers and writes
them on the board.
- T plays the tape the second time
for Ss to check their answers.
-Ss listen to the tape in the second
time.
- T asks Ss to work in groups of 4 to
compare their answers.
-Ss work in groups to check and
compare the answers.
- T checks Ss’ answers by calling on
some Ss.
- Suggested answers:
+ They put on special clothes.
+ Housewives prepare special foods
+ They go to a shrine.
+ They drink rice wine.
+ They watch television.
+ They eat a special meal.
TASK 2
Instruction: You are going to listen
to the tape again and answer the Qs.
- Before Ss listen to the tape again to
do the task, T asks them to try to
answer the Qs with the things they

remember from the previous times
of listening.
-Ss try to remember ans answer the
Qs.
- T plays the tape again for Ss to do
the task.
-Ss listen to the tape again.
- After playing the tape, T gets Ss to
work in pairs and check their
answers.
-Ss work in pairs to check the
answers.
- T calls on some pairs to give the
answers and elicits feedback from
other Ss.
Suggested answers:
1. Because they want to get rid of
the dirt of the old year and welcome
the new year.
2. From television or the radio.
3. Kimonos or special dress.
4. No, New Year is mostly
celebrated among family only.
Post-listening 15 mins: Activity 1:
-T asks Ss to
work in pairs to
compare the
aspects of the
Vietnamese New
Year with those of

the Japanese one.

Activity 2:

with a model
listening tape
about the
comparison
between

Vietnamese New
Year and Japanese
one.
-T gives each Ss a
paper containing
the tapescript and
some missing
words.
-Ss are required to
listen to the audio
and fill in blanks.
-After listening, T
will check answer
with class.
Homework: Ss
learn more about
customs and
traditions in
several holidays
around Vietnam.
