Abstract

Listening comprehension is a difficult skill for foreign language learners to develop and for
their teachers to teach. It is admitted that pre-listening stage is of great help in reducing
difficulties for the learners. This study investigated the effects of pre-listening activities on
the listening performances of grade 10 students at Nguyen Gia Thieu high school. The
research involved the participation of 100 students and ten teachers answering the survey
questionnaire. Besides, the researcher conducted class observations in three classes to
support the findings. The results showed the current situation of teaching and learning pre-
listening stage at Nguyen Gia Thieu high school, the students’ preferences for pre-listening
activities and the teachers’ and the students’ comments on the pre-listening activities
available in the textbook. Basing on those findings, some recommendations for
implementing pre-listening activities were provided. They were improving the pre-
listening activities in the material and using pre-listening activities appropriately and
flexibly. The findings are generally consistent with the results of the small number of
previous studies in this area but there is certainly scope for further investigation.
