A FRIEND IN NEED IS A FRIEND INDEED
One day, two friends were walking through the woods. Suddenly, they heard a loud
noise behind them. They stopped and turned around to see what it was.
“It’s a bear!” cried one man.
He did not think about his friend, but instead quickly ran to the nearest tree.He
climbed up to the highest branch.
The other man was slower, and he suddendly found himself alone with the bear
near him.
He quickly lay down with his face to the ground and didn’t move. He pretended to
be dead, because he was once told that a bear would not eat a dead body.
The bear came closer to the man. He walked all around him, then stopped and
lowered his head close to the man’s ear. After a few minutes, the bear went away.
The “dead” man then sat up, and his friend came down from the tree.
“What did the bear say to you?” asked his friend jokingly.
The “dead” man thought about it, and answered,”The bear told me to find a better
friend than one who runs away when there is trouble.”

II,
When I was young I argued with my brothers and sisters all the time. I
used to share most of my toys with my brother, but he specialised in keeping them
for himself. When I asked him for anything he simply used to refuse to give it to me,
and then I became very angry with him.Our sisters blamed everything on us when
our parents accused us of quarelling all the time. My brother and I got annoyed
about this, but only succeeded in making matters worse. Our parents didn’t approve
of our quarelling so much, and insisted on not taking sides. They either laughed
about it, or told us to forgive each other for everything. Soon we became good at
getting on well with each other.

More and more young people are doing voluntary work abroad.
The wide variety of jobs and destinations available is making it an increasingly attractive
option for those who have just left school and have a year free before university. Many

choose to spend these twelve months working in poor countries. There they will earn little
or no money, but they will be doing something useful and enjoying the experience.
The work may consist of helping local communities, for example by helping to build
new roads or provide water supplies to isolated rural villages.Other projects may
concentrate more on conservation and environmental protection. Whatever kind of job it is,
though, it is certain to be challenging and worthwhile, and an experience that will never be
