What Is a Season?
Is the weather the same all year?
In most places on Earth, the weather
changes with the seasons. A season is a
time of year.
There are four
seasons. Which is

One year has four seasons. The
seasons are spring, summer, fall, and
winter. The next year we have the
same seasons. The order is the same.
The seasons form a pattern.

Spring
Spring is the season after winter. In
spring, the weather is warm. There
may be many rainy days in some
places. You can predict what the
weather will be like each spring.
How can you tell it
is spring?
CXECA08ARD201_OLR_U3.indd 4CXECA08ARD201_OLR_U3.indd 4 2/20/06 7:11:27 PM2/20/06 7:11:27 PM

There are more hours of daylight in
spring than in winter. People may go
outside more. They may work in the
garden. There is more warmth and
sunlight.

things you like to
do in spring?

Summer
Summer is the season after spring.
You can predict what the weather will
be like in summer
because the seasons
follow a pattern
each year. It is
much warmer in
summer than in

spring.
6
Many places in
California get lots
of sunshine. In
California, September
is one of the warmest
months of the year.
In summer, the weather is
warm enough to do many
things outside.
CXECA08ARD201_OLR_U3.indd 6CXECA08ARD201_OLR_U3.indd 6 2/20/06 7:11:58 PM2/20/06 7:11:58 PM
Summer has many hours of daylight.
The weather can be very hot and
sunny. In many places, summer is the
warmest time of the year. Many
people enjoy going to the beach in
summer.
MAIN IDEA AND DETAILS How is the
weather in summer different from the
weather in spring?
7
Most people
like sunny days.

Fall
The season after summer is fall.
There are fewer hours of daylight in
fall than in summer. Some fall days are

sunny. Others are cloudy. In most
places, it does not rain as much in fall.
Leaves on some trees
change color in fall.
CXECA08ARD201_OLR_U3.indd 8CXECA08ARD201_OLR_U3.indd 8 2/20/06 7:29:42 PM2/20/06 7:29:42 PM
The air gets cooler in fall. In some
places, people have to wear heavier
clothes during this season. You can
predict the weather in fall, too. The
weather this fall will be a lot like the
weather was last fall.
MAIN IDEA AND DETAILS What is fall?
9
In some places, the
weather turns cooler
during the fall.

Winter
Winter is the season after fall. Of the
four seasons, winter has the fewest
hours of daylight. Some places are
very cold in winter. Snow may fall.
People in cold places wear very warm
clothes. In other places, the air may
just get cooler. Spring will come again
after winter.
MAIN IDEA AND
DETAILS
What is the

weather like in winter?
Winter is the
coldest season.
In California,
January and
February are
the coldest
months of the
year. Most of
California’s rain
falls in the
winter months.

Weather changes over the seasons.
It is fun to build snow
