Passage 1: Read the newspaper article below and answer questions 1 – 4.
Japan increases trade and investment in Asia
Japan has been the most powerful country in Asian, but it had little trade with the region until
now. Now, Japan is doing more trade with Asia than with the rest of the world.
In 1985 the US was Japan’s main customer; Japan exported a third more to the US than to

Asia. Now, Asia buys 30% more than the US and three times as much as Europe. Japanese
imports from Asia increased by 105% between 1985 and 1995. Now, Japan’s imports amount
to $60 billion from Asia in 1993, compared to $50 billion from the US and $24 billion from
Europe.
In 1994, Japan invested $7.7 million in Asia. During the next five years, 75% of Japan’s direct
investment will be there. Japanese investment in the region is now $64 billion, as against US
investment of $26 billion, or German investment of $7 billion.
Thailand expects new Japanese investment to reach $8 billion by 1998. Already, Japan controls
90% of Thailand’s auto market. Labor costs in Japan are high, so Japanese companies are
1
setting up in countries where workers get paid much less; an increasing number of Japan’s
employees now live outside Japan.

Passage 2
Samuel Morse accomplished something that is rarely accomplished: he achieved fame and
success in two widely differing areas. Throughout his youth he studied art, and after graduating

from Yale University he went on to London in 1811 where his early artistic endeavors met 5
with acclaim. In London he was awarded the gold medal of the Adelphi Arts Society for a clay
figure of Hercules, and his paintings The Dying Hercules and The Judgement of Jupiter were
selected for exhibit by the Royal Academy. Later in life, after returning to America, Morse
became known for his portraits. His portraits of the Marquis 10 de Lafayette today are on
exhibit in the New York City Hall and the New York Public Library. In addition to his artistic
accomplishments, Morse is also well-known today for his work developing the telegraph and
what is known as Morse Code. He first had the idea of trying to develop the telegraph in 1832,
on board a ship returning to America 15 from Europe. It took eleven long years of ridicule by
his associates, disinterest by the public, and a shortage of funds before Congress finally
allocated $30,000 to Morse for his project. With these funds, Morse hung a telegraph line from
Washington, D.C. to Baltimore, and on May 24, 1844, a message in the dots and dashes of
Morse Code was 20 successfully transmitted.

Passage 1
The first computer programmer
Ada Lovelace was the daughter of the poet Lord Byron. She was taught by Mary
Somerville, a well-known researcher and scientific author, who introduced her to Charles
Babbage in June 1833. Babbage was an English mathematician, who first had the idea for a
programmable computer.
In 1842 and 1843, Ada translated the work of an Italian mathematician, Luigi
Menabrea, on Babbage’s Analytical Engine. Though mechanical, this machine was an
important step in the history of computers; it was the design of a mechanical general-purpose
computer. Babbage worked on it for many years until his death in 1871. However, because of
5
financial, political, and legal issues, the engine was never built. The design of the machine was
very modern; it anticipated the first completed general-purpose computers by about 100 years.
When Ada translated the article, she added a set of notes which specified in complete
detail a method for calculating certain numbers with Analytical Engine, which have since been
recognized by historians as the world’s first computer program. She also saw possibilities in it
that Babbage hadn’t: she realized that the machine could compose pieces of music. The
computer programming language “Ada”, used in some aviation and military programs, is
named after her.
Read passage above and decide if the following statements are TRUE (T) or FALSE (F).
1. Ada Lovelace’s teacher introduced her to Charles Babbage.
2. Ada translated article in 1842.
3. Babbage’s design was ahead of its time.
4. Ada’s work was instantly recognized as being the first computer program.
5. Babbage saw that this machine could write music.
Passage 2
DINNER WITH AMERICAN FRIENDS
If you are invited to an American’s friend home for dinner, remember these general rules for
polite behavior. First of all, arrive approximately on time but not early. Americans expect

promptness. It will be all right to be 10 or 15 minutes late but not 45 minutes late. Dinner
might be over-cooked and ruined by then. When you are invited to someone’s home for a
meal, it is polite to bring a small gift. Flowers or candy are always appropriate. If you have an
attractive thing made in your native country, your host or hostess will certainly enjoy receiving
that gift. What will you do if you are served some food if you cannot eat or you do not like?
Do not make a fuss about it. Simply eat what you can and hope that no one notices it. Be sure
to compliment the cook on food that you are enjoying. Do not leave immediately after dinner,
but do not overstay your welcome, either. The next day, call or write a thank-you note to say
how much you enjoyed the evening, even you tell a white lie…
Read passage 2 and circle the correct answer for each question.

Passage 1
Shambo
Shambo, the bull at the centre of a three-month legal fight, has been killed. After a positive test
for TB, an order was made for his slaughter, in keeping with the law. However, the multi-faith
community where he lived went to court to try to save him as he was a sacred animal to
Hindus. A High Court judge said that the order to kill him was unlawful, but the decision was
overturned in the Appeal Court. Police had to be called in as worshipper had formed a human
shield around the animal to stop him being taken away. Opinion is very divided on the issue-
some believe that he was a danger to the national herd and needed to be killed, while others
feel that religious beliefs should be respected and the community had offered to provide
sufficient measures to ensure that he would not infect any other animals if he contracted the
disease as they planned to isolate him. The authorities cut through the security fence and led

the bull away. The following morning they announced that he had been given a lethal injection.
The debate on the issue is unlikely to end with the death of Shambo and may widen into a
debate about the policy of killing cows that test positive for TB.
Read the passage and decide if the following statements are TRUE (T) or FALSE (F).
1. Shambo lived in a religious community.
2. Police went in because there were violent protests.
3. Everybody feels that he needed to be killed.
4. The authorities entered the place where Shambo was kept without any problem
5. Shambo was shot dead.

Passage 2
The planet Earth is 4,600 million years old. It is difficult for us to think about such an
enormous length of time because it has little meaning for us. We can, however, simplify the
idea to make it more understandable. We can compare the planet Earth to a person of forty six
years of age.
Nothing is known about the first seven years of this person’s life. Very little information
exists about the middle period either. It was only at the age of forty-two that the Earth began to
flower.
Dinosaurs and great reptiles did not appear until one year ago, when the planet was
forty-five. Mammals only arrived eight months ago. In the middle of last week, man-like apes
became ape-like men and began to communicate with each other. Last weekend, the Ice Age
covered the Earth.
Modern man has only been around for four hours. During the last hour man discovered
agriculture. The Industrial Revolution and the rise of large cities began just six hours ago.
During the short time, modern man has made a rubbish tip of the Earth. In one minute, he has
increased his numbers to terrible proportions, and has caused the death of hundreds of species
of animals. He has robbed and destroyed the planet in his search for fuels. Now he stands, like
a violent, spoilt child, delighted at the speed of his rise to power, on the edge of final mass
destruction and killing all the life which exists in the solar system.
Read the passage and circle the correct answer for each question

1. The passage tells us about that …………
A. a great deal is known about how the Earth was created.
B. life on Earth has begun relative recently.
C. more is known about the firsts part of the Earth’s life than the middle part.
D. scientists are well-informed about the middle part of the Earth’s life.
2. We are informed by the author that …………………
A. the dinosaurs appeared during the middle period.
B. mammals and great reptiles both appeared at the same time.
C. there were more than forty-five kinds of great reptiles.
D. ape-like man appeared before the last Ice Age.
3. The author is mainly interested in ………………
A. the time when man first evolved from apes.
B. what has happened since the Industrial Revolution.
C. the effects of farming.
D. the period before the last Ice Age.
4. It would appear that the main danger ahead is that ………….
A. man will destroy everything on Earth.
B. man will use up all the fuels.
C. there will be a population explosion.
D. more species of animal may die out.
5. The author’s general view of man seems to be that…………….
A. he has no right to be so destructive.
