LESSON PLAN
Unit 10 : NATURE IN DANGER
Period : Language focus
Time allotted : 45 minutes
Class : 11A2
Date : 18/02/2011

I. Aim(s):
By the end of the lesson, ss will be able to:
- Distinguish the difference between the 4 sounds /sl/, /sm/, /sn/, /sw/.
- Pronounce the words and sentences containing these sounds correctly.
- Use relative pronouns with prepositions
II. Teaching aids: Textbook, posters, handout
III. Anticipated problems: Ss may have difficulties in pronouncing the 4 sounds.
PROCEDURE
I. Warm up (5mins)
Game: Shark attack
Work arrangement: Whole class
- Write 8 words on the board: snow, slap, smile, sweet, slide, swear, snake, smooth
- Give instruction: “In order to save the man and get a gold apple, you have to pronounce
correctly 8 words on the board, one by one. If you pronounce one word correctly, the
man will go up; if wrong, the man will go down. The game will over when the man
reaches the gold apple or is attacked by the shark.”
- Check instruction
- Play the game
Lead-in:
- Ask Ss:
+ Which couple of words has the same sound?
→ slap & slide, snow & snake, smile &smooth, swear & sweet.
+ Which sounds are they?


→ /sl/, /sn/, /sm/, /sw/
“Today, we are going to distinguish the differences between 4 sounds: /sl/, /sn/, /sm/,
/sw/”
II. Presentation (14mins)
1. Pronunciation
1.1. Listen and repeat:
Work arrangement: Individual
- Stick poster on the board and introduce the sounds to the Ss
/sl/ /sm/ /sn/ /sw/
sleep small snack swim
slap smoke snow sweep
slim smell snooker swing
slowly smoke snowy switch
- Read out all words one time
- Ask Ss to listen and repeat these words.
- Read out and ask Ss to listen and repeat the first sound after the teacher in order of
column 1,2,3,4
1.2. Practice reading aloud this dialogue:
Work arrangement: Pair
- Ask Ss to work in pairs to practice reading aloud this dialogue in poster
A. Is snowy at home? Snowy Smith?
B. He is sleeping. Go away.
A. Sleeping? Where?
B. In there. Why do you smile?
A. Perhaps Snowy is in there. But he is not asleep.
B. I swear he is sleeping.
A. When Snowy sleeps, he snores but he looks sweet.
2. Grammar
- Give an example: My friend is an astronaut. We often talk about her.
- Ask Ss who can combine the 2 sentences

→ My friend about whom we often talk is an astronaut.
- Write some other examples on the board:
+ The song is so sweet. I listen to it every day.
+ The girl is cute. My brother talked to her at the party last night.
- Ask Ss to combine these sentences
- Present the grammar point in detail
Grammar point: Relative pronouns with prepositions in relative clauses
*) Relative pronoun as the object can put after prepositions in relative clauses:
Eg: My friend about whom we often talk is an astronaut.
Notes:
+ We cannot leave out “Whom, Which” here. (Whom for people, Which for things)
+ We cannot use “Who, That”
Eg: The room in which the meeting was held was very small.
- Ask Ss to write again above sentences in this form.
- Call some Ss to go to the board to write these sentences on the board.
Expected answers:
+ The song to which I listen every day is so sweet.
+ The girl to whom my brother talked at the party last night is cute.
*) The preposition can come after the verb or the object of the verb in relative clauses:
Eg: The song which I listen to every day is so sweet.
Notes:
+ We can also leave out the relative pronoun
E.g: The boy your brother goes with is my teacher’s son.
- Ask Ss to make some sentences
- Call Ss to write some sentences on the board
- Give feedback
III. Practice (9 mins)
Game: Noughts and Crosses
Work arrangement: Group
- Divide class into 2 teams Tom & Jerry

- Stick poster on the board

- Give instruction:
+ Team Tom is Nought (O), Jerry is Cross(X)
+ One team starts. The team chooses a number, complete the sentence in that number
with suitable relative pronoun (handout ). If the sentence is correct, the team put mark (O,
X) in that square.
+ The first team gets three in a row (across, down, or diagonally) wins.
- Check instruction
- Deliver handout
- Play the game
IV. Production (6 mins)
Exercise 2:
Work arrangement: Pair
- Ask Ss to combine the sentences in textbook, ex 2, page 122, by some different ways of
using relative pronouns with prepositions.
- Ss have 5mins to finish.
- Call on Ss to speak out the answers and then write them up on the board.
- Give feedback
Feedback:
1. The man to whom I talked yesterday was very kind.
2. The man whom I told you about works in the hospital.
3. The woman about whom I am telling you teaches me English.
4. The movie about which they are talking is fantastic.
5. The picture at which she was looking was beautiful.
6. I will give you the address to which you should write.
V. Homework (1 min)
- Make 5 sentences into your notebook about things around you, using relative pronouns

with prepositions.
