Diseases are a natural part of life on Earth. If there were no diseases, the population would grow
too quickly, and there would not be enough food or other resources. So in a way, diseases are
nature's way of keeping the Earth in balance. But sometimes they spread very quickly and kill
large numbers of people. For example, in 1918, an outbreak of the flu spread across the world,
killing over 25 million people in only six months. Such terrible outbreaks of a disease are called
pandemics.
Pandemics happen when a disease changes in a way that our bodies are not prepared to fight. In
1918, a new type of flu virus appeared. Our bodies had no way to fight this new flu virus, and
so it spread very quickly and killed large numbers of people. While there have been many

different pandemic diseases throughout history, all of them have a few things in common.
First, all pandemic diseases spread from one person to another very easily. Second, while they
may kill many people, they generally do not kill people very quickly. A good example of this would
be the Marburg virus. The Marburg virus is an extremely infectious disease. In addition, it is
deadly. About 70-80% of all the people who get the Marburg virus die from the disease. However,
the Marburg virus has not become a pandemic because most people die within three days of
getting the disease. This means that the virus does not have enough time to spread to a large
number of people. The flu virus of 1918, on the other hand, generally took about a week to ten
days to kill its victims, so it had more time to spread.
While we may never be able to completely stop pandemics, we can make them less common.
Doctors carefully monitor new diseases that they fear could become pandemics. For example, in
2002 and 2003, doctors carefully watched SARS. Their health warnings may have prevented
SARS from becoming a pandemic.

to each of the questions from 1 to 9.
Mass transportation revised the social and economic fabric of the American city in three
fundamental ways. It catalyzed physical expansion, it sorted out people and land uses, and it
accelerated the inherent instability of urban life. By opening vast areas of unoccupied land for
residential expansion, the omnibuses, horse railways, commuter trains, and electric trolleys
pulled settled regions outward two to four times more distant from city centers than they were in
the premodern era. In 1850, for example, the borders of Boston lay scarcely two miles from the
old business district by the turn of the century the radius extended ten miles. Now those who
could afford it could live far removed from the old city center and still commute there for work,
shopping, and entertainment. The new accessibility of land around the periphery of almost every
major city sparkedan explosion of real estate development and fulled what we now know as
urban sprawl. Between 1890 and 1920, for example, some 250,000 new residential lots were
recorded within the borders of Chicago, most of them located in outlying areas. Over the same
period, another 550,000 were plotted outside the city limits but within the metropolitan area.
Anxious to take advantage of the possibilities of commuting, real estate developers added
800,000 potential building sites to the Chicago region in just thirty years lots that could have
housed five to six million people. Of course, many were never occupied; there was always a
huge surplus of subdivided, but vacant, land around Chicago and other cities. There excesses
underscore a feature of residential expansion related to the growth of mass transportation urban
sprawl was essentially unplanned. It was carried out by thousands of small investors who paid
little heed to coordinated land use or to future land users. Those who purchased and prepared
land for residential purposes, particularly and near or outside city borders where transit lines and
middle-class inhabitants were anticipated, did so to create demand as much as to respond to it.
Chicago is a prime example of this process. Real estate subdivision there proceeded much faster
than population growth.
