Chapter one
Introduction
1.1. Background to study
Nowadays, English has been the most popular language in the world. It is the
primary language used in international communication relations. The language
which is the most common use on international Word Wide Web is also English. In
universities and colleges in the world, English language is used as the forced
subject. Besides, the students can have opportunities for a good job in many

In Vietnam, Party and State have encouraged studying English to schools from
primary to university levels like compulsory language.

Chapter two
Literature Review
In this part, I am going to show some research and opinions on writing skill in
the same fields, such as:
In Elements of style, William Struck Jr. said that: “A sentence should contain no
unnecessary words, a paragraph no unnecessary sentences, for the same reason
that a drawing should have no unnecessary lines and a machine no unnecessary
parts”
In addition, I am concerned line of William Stunk Jr.: “This requires not that
the write make all his sentences short, or that he avoid all detail and treat his
subjects only in outline, but that every word tell”.
In Writing topic sentences, Dorothy Turner also said that: “…You should be
careful to include one in most of your major paragraphs. Although topic sentences
may appear anywhere in a paragraph, in academic essays they often appear at the
beginning. It might be helpful to think of a topic sentence as working in two
directions simultaneously. It relates the paragraph to the essay's thesis, and thereby
acts as a signpost for the argument of the paper as a whole, but it also defines the
scope of the paragraph itself”.
In writing skill, grammar is an important form, if you are bad at grammar, you
can not write well and maybe wrong. It also is concerned.
In addition, students should develop their writing as well as grammar skill in the
studying activities. The quality of lessons can be increased if students and teachers
can improve their writing in the teaching process as well as studying process.

In short, I see 3 main problems which can affect our writing, include: grammar,
vocabulary and materials. And, sometimes we should notice our practice writing
exactly and ask our teachers or friends about writing.

Table 1: Overview of studying writing skill at CMCC
In question 8, most of the students answered about advantages in their studying
writing process, they are:
- Many sources of materials are on TV, internet, books…

- Teacher’s attitude is good and thoughtful that is effective to the quality of
students.
Besides, in question 9, they also gave some disadvantages that met in during
their studying, such as:
- Students did not attend to their class, they are less and lazy practicing writing,
reading books or materials on internet and others sources… they are noisy in class
-They are very worried about asking their teachers or friend when they met some
problems in this subject.
14
They also responded question 10. They gave some solutions to improve or solve
the disadvantages that they met:
- First, they always practice writing and must understand to use grammar
structures correctly.
- Then, students should learn vocabulary more often.
- Finally, they must be in class and ask teachers or friends about their problems
to find solutions for solving them.
4.1.2. Interviews
4.1.2.1. The attitude of students
Toward Mr. chuong, he answered that the students don’t have good attitudes
about studying writing. Mrs. Lien had no ideas.
4.1.2.2. The quality of writing subject
According to Mrs. Lien, the quality is so. Because most of them must focus on
books or materials that they are studying in class, they are too lazy to search others
material.
However, Mr. Chuong gave that is not good. He also gave some details about
this as: not often practice, not enough vocabulary, grammar and not hard working.
4.1.2.3. The advantages and disadvantages
Most of teachers showed some points about advantages and disadvantages that
are a lot of materials in books, on the internet, on TV. Next, the students also help
about teacher’s helpful guide. The disadvantages are lacking of experiences in

writing, not practicing often, lacking of basis skills, for example: how to use
vocabulary, grammar…
15
4.1.2.4. Solutions
To solve these disadvantages, they also get their recommend about solutions.
First, the students must try themselves. Second, the best is practicing more often.
Finally, they must read a lot (not only in books, at school but also in real life).
4.2. Discussion
In this part, I will get my opinions in the following lines:
4.2.1. The quality of studying writing in English K2012 at CMCC
Most of the students in English K2012 can not write well. They did not use
grammar and sentence structures correctly, so the quality is also affected.
In my investigation, they answered that the quality was bad. Therefore, they can
not overcome their tests.
Next, all the teachers responded that the quality of studying writing is so bad.
The following table will present the quality of students in studying writing III of
English K2012:
Good Advance Middle Bad
Students(%) 5 (8,8%) 14 (24,5%) 28 (49,1%) 10 (17,6%)
Table 2: Result on the score table of writing III
Over the table above, we can see that the marks of students in English K2012 at
CMCC in writing skill were not good. So, the quality was affected.
16
4.2.2. The attitude of students in writing
The teachers said that the students don’t have good attitudes in studying writing.
It is important that also can affect to the students’ quality in this skill.
4.2.3. The advantages in writing
In studying writing skill, the students always receive the support from their
English teachers such as Mr. Chuong, Mr. Nguyen, Mrs. Lien They are very
enthusiasm. They help their students overcome the problems. In addition, the

materials are popular on TV, on the internet,… So, the students can research easily.
Finally, the facilities are good.
4.2.4. The disadvantages in writing
The students also met many problems in studying process themselves. They are:
the students are lacking experiences in writing, not practicing often, and the
students are lacking basis skills such as: how to use grammar, sentences structures,
besides, they can not read or refer materials.
4.2.5. The solutions
I want to repeat the solutions that I got in the parts above. Firstly, each student
must try themselves. In addition, the students should practice writing more usually
whenever they can. Finally, maybe, the students should read books or materials, not
only in books, at schools but also in real life.
17
Chapter five
Conclusion
In my studying process in English K2012 at CMCC. I saw that the students’
writing ability had many disadvantages such as: less vocabulary knowledge,
grammar structures,…The main reasons that the students’ attitude had not been
serious, class size has not been stable, the students’ self-studying has not been good,
they were worried about studying, the teaching staff lacked…. Although the
students were helped by native teaching staff, they did not study well.
Therefore, I got many solutions to help the students can study and writing’s
ability will be good. The solutions were presented in discussion part of chapter 4
above.
The students want to have the ability in writing well that is easy. But, the
importance that the students should practice more usually. Our writing skill is good;
we can find a good job in future. In addition, it is also important for students as well
as a translator.
