Part 2: The examiner asks the candidate to talk about one topic for three or four minutes. The
candidate has one minute to think about what to say and makes some notes if necessary.
Part 3: The examiner and the candidate discuss a few more questions related to the topic in
Part 2.
PART I: INTERVIEW (2-3 minutes)
• May I have your full name, please?
• What do you hate the most about children?
 Crying a lot I think
 What I hate the most about children is that they are lazy eating
• How many children would you like to have?
 I would like to have three children although we are encouraged to have one or
two children only by the government.
• When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
 When I was little, I wanted to become a teacher because I admired/ loved my
teacher a lot and I wanted to become a person like her/him. However, I’m an
accountant now.
 When I was little, I wished to become a doctor because I wanted to help many
people but now I work at a bank.
PART 2: LONG TURN (4-5 minutes)
Ask the candidate to talk about the topic he/she has chosen.
Describe a young child you know or know about.
You should say:


• What he or she looks like
• What he or she likes doing
• How that person has changed
And say what you think they might do in the future, and why.
PART 3: TWO-WAY DISCUSSION (3-4 minutes)
• Do you like children?
 Yes, I do. I really love children because they look so cute. I myself have two kids.
Although they are naughty, they are very lovely.
• Do you think children are spoilt nowadays?
 Yes, I do. In my opinion, nowadays children are more spoilt than they were in the
past. For example, today children are very lazy eating and parents often have to
take children around so that they can both play and eat at the same time. Besides,
they are more demanding than before.
 No, I don’t. Personally I think children nowadays are not spoilt at all. They are
just cleverer.
• Are children becoming more dangerous and violent?
 Yes, they are. There are more and more action movies that children like watching.
These films with a lot of fighting might have a negative influence on children as
they tend to fight with their classmates.
• What do you think children worry about most?
 I think what worry children most is their marks at school
 . I think what worry children most is that they have so many exercises that they
don’t have much time to play.

• What do you do? What’s your job?
 I’m an accountant for ABC Company which specializes in construction.
• What countries have you visited?
 I have been to several countries in the world such as China, Singapore and
Thailand. Among these countries, I like Singapore best because it is a very clean
one.
 I have never been abroad but I would love to visit France one day because I have
always wanted to visit the Eiffel Tower.
• When do you feel best? In the morning, afternoon or evening?
 I think I feel best in the morning after a sound sleep/ a night rest. It seems that I
have more energy at that time.
PART 2: LONG TURN (4-5 minutes)
Ask the candidate to talk about the topic he/she has chosen.
Describe an old person you know or know about.
You should mention:
• What that person looks like
• What he or she likes doing
• How that person has changed since they were younger
And say if you think that person is happy to be that age or not and why.
PART 3: TWO-WAY DISCUSSION (3-4 minutes)
• How will your life be different when you reach your old age?
 When I’m old, life will be much different as it keeps changing, you know. Perhaps
there will be more people living until the age of 100 thanks to the advancement in

medicine and better standard of living.
• Is it important to prepare financially for old age?
 Definitely. People should save money for their old age so that they don’t have to
depend on their children a lot for what they want to spend or when they are sick.
• What can people in old age teach younger people?
 The old can teach younger people a lot of things especially their experience. They
can also give young children a lot of valuable advice.
• How many people do you know who are enjoying their old age?
 I think I’ve met a lot of people who are enjoying their old age. For example, my
grandparents are very happy to have grandchildren to take care of. They also like
to do morning exercise and chat with other old neighbours.

 I’m married and I have two children, a son and a daughter.
 I’m still single but not available. I’ve got a boyfriend/ girlfriend. We are getting
married this year.
• How do you spend your free time?

 In my free time, I like watching TV and going out with my friends.
• What do you like to do in your free time but you can’t?
 I really like to visit my parents during my free time but they live in Nghe An,
which is very far away from here so I can’t visit them so often.
 I really like travelling abroad in my free time but my work is really busy so I can’t
manage to have a long holiday.
PART 2: LONG TURN (4-5 minutes)
Ask the candidate to talk about the topic he/she has chosen.
Describe a building that has made an impression on you.
You should say:
• What it looks like
• Where it is
• What it is used for
And say if you like that building or not and why.
PART 3: TWO-WAY DISCUSSION (3-4 minutes)
• Do you think that old buildings are more beautiful than new ones? Why (not)?
 Yes, I do. Some old buildings in Hanoi such as Hanoi Opera House or Sofitel
Metropole Hotel look very elegant and much more beautiful than new buildings.
 No, I don’t. I can see that new buildings are often equipped with modern facilities
and are now well-designed. Therefore, they look much more beautiful than old
ones.
• Describe a building you dislike. Why don’t you like it?
 I dislike the building where I work because it looks really old. It was built in the
1990s. There are two stories…
• How important are monuments (like Big Ben) in defining a nation?
 I think they are really important in giving the image of the country. For example,
when people see the Eiffel Tower, they think of France and the One-Pillar Pagoda
reminds people of Vietnam.
• How do you think ancient civilizations (like the Egyptians) constructed large
buildings?

 It is still a mystery to scientists. Perhaps God built them.

and took advantage of the water flow.

• Where were you born?
 I was born in Hung Yen province, which is not very far from here. You know my
hometown is very famous for the delicious longan.
• Where do you live? Do you live in a house or an apartment?
 I live in a small house in Hanoi. There are four rooms in my house: a kitchen, a
bathroom and two bedrooms.
 I live in a small apartment/ flat in Trung Hoa Nhan Chinh urban area. My flat is
on the fifth floor and it has four rooms: a kitchen, a bathroom and two bedrooms.
• How long have you lived there?
 I’ve been living there since I got married. I love the neighbourhood because it is
not very far from my company and my children’s schools.
PART 2: LONG TURN (4-5 minutes)
Ask the candidate to talk about the topic he/she has chosen.

Describe a place which you think is beautiful.
You should say:
• What that place is like
• How you can get there from here
• What kind of people usually go there
And say why you think it is beautiful.
PART 3: TWO-WAY DISCUSSION (3-4 minutes)
• Is your country the best place for you to live?
 I think Vietnam is the best place to live because here I live near my parents.
Besides, there are many beautiful places in Vietnam to visit and Vietnamese
people are very friendly as well.
• Would you like to live where there is desert and hot weather?
 No, I wouldn’t. It is too hot for me to live in such places. I can’t stand the heat
and it’s difficult to make a living I think.
• Would you like to live where there is always snow?
 No, I wouldn’t. I don’t want to live in such harsh weather. Moreover, I’m easy to
catch a cold. It would be fine if I lived in Korea because it snows only in the
winter.
• Where would you like to go for your next holiday?
 I’m planning to go back home on my next holiday because I haven’t been back for
three months. I am going with my family and going to visit my parents and some
of my close relatives there. I am planning to get together with some old friends in
the café near my house, too. …

 My father is determined and humourous. We can never change his mind once he’s
decided to do something. He often also tells us jokes which make us laugh.
• What's your mother like?
 My mother is a caring and understanding person. She takes good care of my
family and whenever I have a problem, I always share with her because she often
listens to my problem and gives me very good advice.
PART 2: LONG TURN (4-5 minutes)
Ask the candidate to talk about the topic he/she has chosen.
Talk about one thing you are planning to do or might do next weekend.
You should mention:
• Where you can do that thing
• How you can get there
• Any equipment you need to do it
And say whether you are looking forward to doing that thing or not, and why.
PART 3: TWO-WAY DISCUSSION (3-4 minutes)
• Is there anything you dislike about weekends?
 Yes, there is. At weekend, I have to do a lot of housework.
• How do you feel the evening before the weekend starts?
 On Friday night, I often feel very relaxed because I have just finished a hard
working week and can plan a lot of things to do at the weekend, for example,
taking my children to the cinema or going shopping with my friends. It’s always

great to think of weekends.
• Are you happy with a two-day weekend or would it be three days?
 I think a two-day weekend is fine for me because then I can work 5 days during
the week and then spend enough time relaxing at the weekend with my family. A
three day weekend would be too long because then we had to reduce our working
hours which means less money we could earn.
• What’s the most memorable weekend you have had in the past years?
 The most unforgetable weekend for me was when I went to Halong Bay with my

 I have two brothers. My younger brother is married and has a daughter so I have
a niece. He lives with my parents in my hometown. My younger brother is 26
years old. He now lives and works in Hanoi. We sometimes meet each other at
weekends.
• Do you live alone? Who do you live with?
 No, I don’t. I live with my family on Yen Hoa sreet.

• Have you ever lived in another country? How many cities have you lived in?
 No, I haven’t. I’ve never been abroad but I would love to live in Singapore
because it is a very clean country with a great education system. I was born and
grew up in Tuyen Quang but now I live and work in Hanoi so I’ve lived in two
cities then.
 Yes, I have. I used to live in Japan for 4 years when I was a student.
PART 2: LONG TURN (4-5 minutes)
Ask the candidate to talk about the topic he/she has chosen.
Describe an item of clothing that you often wear.
You should say:
• What it looks like
• When and how you got it
• When you wear it
And say how it compares to other clothes you have.
PART 3: TWO-WAY DISCUSSION (3-4 minutes)
• How long does it take you to decide which clothes to wear?
 Only 5 minutes because I have to get up early to make breakfast for my family. I
usually don’t have much time to choose which clothes to wear.
• Do you always recycle your old clothes or give them to charity?
 Sometimes I recycle my old clothes and give them to my younger cousins.
Sometimes I donate them to the poor or people in remote or disaster areas.
• What do clothes tell people about our personalities?
 I think that we are what we wear, which means, clothes tell a lot about our
personalities. For example, extrovert people care a lot about what to wear and
they tend to put on very fashionable clothes or sporty people often like to wear
jeans and T-shirts.
• Do you think clothes are a waste of money?
 No, I don’t. Clothes make us more beautiful. Moreover, comfortable clothes make
me more confident in everything I do.

 In my family, I respect my mother most because she has been taking care of me
since I was little. She is also very understanding. I always come to her when I
have any problems. She is really my idol and I want to become a person like her.
 In my family, I respect my father most because he taught me how to live well and
always gives me good advice.
• Who has had the most influence in your life?
 My father has had the most influence in my life. It is my father who strictly taught
me valuable lessons in life and always stands by my side whenever I have trouble.
He really sets a good example for us to follow.
PART 2: LONG TURN (4-5 minutes)
Ask the candidate to talk about the topic he/she has chosen.
Talk about a pet you have or have had.
You should say:
• What it looked like
• What its personality was like

• What you do or did with it
And say what kind of person a similar pet might be suitable for.

• Do you know anyone with an unusual pet?
 Yes. A friend of mine has a snake at home. Everyone coming to home is very
afraid of it but still curiou to have a look.
• Is it important for children to have a pet? Why (not)?
 Yes, it is. It is essential that children have a pet to play with, especially those
living in cities because nowadays children don’t have many friends. A pet at home
can help him/ her not to feel lonely.
 No, it isn’t. Pets can bring many diseases for children. For example, some
children might have allergy to cat or dog’s hair.
• What problems do pets create for people?
 Pets create a lot of problems for people. Firstly, they can cause people’s conflict
with their neihbour when their pets, like a dog, bark loudly at night or make a
mess in their neighours’ houses. Secondly, rasing some pets can be bad for your
health. For example, some children might be allergic to pets’ hair.
• Is it wrong to spend money on pets and pet food when so many people are starving?
 No, it isn’t. Those who raise pets can spend money on whatever they like because
it’s their money, they can decide how to spend it.
 Yes, it is. It is wrong to see people spend a lot of money on pets or pet food. They
had better give the money to do chartiy, for example, giving it to the poor or the
disabled.

 Because I need it for my work. Moreoever, I can read books and watch a lot of

grammar at first. I now want to improve speaking and listening skills.
• Why did you decide to take this course?
 I decided to take this course because I’m preparing to take B1 test to get B1
certificate, which is required for my M.A graduation.

Talk about your favourite leisure activity.
You should say:
• how often you do it
• who you often do it with
• why you enjoy doing it
And say what kind of people you would recommend this activity to, and why.

• What’s your favourite magazine?
 Actually I don’t like reading magazine. I often read online news only to know
what is happening around me and in the world.

• Would you rather go to a bar or a nightclub?
 I have never been to either of these because I don’t want to go to these places. I
prefer to go to a coffee shop instead with my friends or family at the weekend.
• What games are popular among the youth nowadays? Why are they popular?
 To tell the truth, I don’t play games so often. I’m not pretty sure what game is
popular among young people. But many of my friends like to play Picachu or
Digging Gold because they are easy to play and can be installed in their
computers for free.
• What is your favourite game? Why?
 I don’t often play games but in my free time, I sometimes play Lines because it is
easy to play and there is no time limit so I can both play and do other things if
any.
