The fourth letter of the Greek alphabet was named delta. Its sign was a triangle – a three – sided figure.
Today the word delta means triangular group of islands at the mouth of a river.
2
Deltas are formed by the rivers themselves. Large rivers may carry sand and fine soil as they sweep towards
their mouths. Near their outlets, rivers usually slow, and can less easily carry their burdens. Sand and silt are
dropped when rivers enter a larger body of water.
Not all rivers form deltas. Ocean currents may be strong enough to sweep the river water away before sand
and silt are deposited. Or the deposits may themselves be swept away .
The fertile soil of the Nile delta has made it famous. Man’s history in this delta dates back for thousands of
years.

language. This includes our postures, facial expressions, and gestures. Because body language is so important,

of body language and its meaning. (Note : These meanings are for North America. Interpretations may differ
a bit in other cultures).
A smile is a sign of friendliness and interest. But people sometimes smile just to be polite. To get
another clue from people’s faces, notice their eyes. Friendliness and interest are expressed when a person’s
eyes meet yours (especially when you are the one who is talking) and the look away and meet yours again. A
person who doesn’t look away is expressing a challenge. A person who doesn’t look at you is expressing a lack
of interest (or is shy). Hand gestures can mean a person is interested in the conversation. Stay away from

My aunt is one of those people who can talk to anyone about anything. If she goes to a party where she
doesn’t know any of the people, she just walks up to the first person that she sees and introduces herself. And yet
she doesn’t seem to talk about deeply important things like politics or religion. She always starts off with something
very obvious like the other person’s job. Very soon she talks as if she’s known the other person for years. I asked
her once what her secret was. She said that the most important thing in a conversation was listening. People love
talk about themselves, so if you allow them to do so, it’s very easy to keep a conservation going. You have to listen

very carefully and ask questions. And you have to look interested, too. So don’t keep looking at other things in the
room while you’re talking to someone.
Another thing that I’ve noticed is that she only pays people compliments. She says : “ I like your hair. Which
hairdresser do you go to ” or “ you look very well. Have you been on holiday ?” Friendly messages like this seem to
provide an easy way into a conversation.

In many modern countries, people think of a family as a mother, a father and their children. But this is not the
kind only of the family group. In some parts of the world, a family group has many other members. This kind of

large family is called an “extended family” or a “joint family”.
The joint family includes all living relatives on either the mother’s or the father’s side of the family. It is made
up of grandparents, parents, brothers, sisters, uncles, aunts and cousins. They live together in a large house or in huts
built close together.
Early people probably lived in joint families. They had to be part of a large group in order to survive. The
members of the group help each other hunt. They work together to protect themselves from dangerous animals and
other enemies. In China, people lived in joint families. When a son married, he and his wife lived at his parents’
home. Unmarried daughters remained at home until they married. Chinese children felt very loyal to their parents.
Younger members of the joint family always took care of the old ones.
18
In India and Africa, some people still live in joint families. The members of a joint family share their earnings
and property. If one members of the group becomes ill or has bad luck, the others help the person. As in the past, the
members of the joint family offer each other help and protection.
