Clothes can tell a lot about person. Some people like very colorful clothes
because they want everyone to look at them and they want to be the center of things.
Others like to wear nice clothes, but their clothes are not colorful or fancy. They do
not like people to look at them. Clothes today are very different from the clothes of
the 1800s. One difference is the way they look. For example, in 1800s, all women
wore dress. The dresses all had long skirts. But today, women do not wear dresses

with long skirts. Sometimes they wear short skirts. Sometimes they wear pants.
Another difference between 1800s and today is the cloth. In the 1800s, clothes were
made only from natural kinds of cloth. They were made from cotton, wool, and silk.
But today, there are many kinds of man-made cloth. A lot of clothes are now made
from nylon, rayon or polyester.

on November 7th in 1867. She was a scientist not only a physics but also a chemist.
She was awarded two Nobel Prizes both in physics and chemistry. She died on July

Thailand is an interesting place to visit. Unlike many places that are either urban or rural,
Thailand provides a good mix of both. Her rich history is seen in the many ancient buildings and
artifacts all over the world.
Bangkok and Chiang Mai are the two cities that most tourists frequent. They are where
businesses take place. Many shopping complexes are also found there. Besides these, there are
more than three hundred Buddhist temples and shrines. Most tourists visit the temples to see the
intricate carvings and designs on the walls. In the temple complex in Wat Pho is the Temple of the
Reclining Buddha. It is amazing how such a huge statue could be built then. For those who have
never seen it, just imagine a statue that is thirty people long and ten people high!
A trip to Thailand is never complete without a visit to the resorts. Island like Phuket, Koh
Samui and the Phi Phi Islands are popular among tourists, too. They are a haven for those who
want to take a break from work and enjoy the sun, sea and sand. Many people go to these islands to
scuba dive as well for the aquamarine waters and exceptional dive sites are a draw to them.

In the Unites States, people celebrate Mother’s day and Father’s day. Mother’s Day is
celebrated on the second Sunday in May. On this occasion, mother usually receives greeting
cards and gifts from her husband and children. The best gift of all for an American Mom is a
day of leisure. The majority of American mothers have outside jobs as well as housework, so
their working days are often very hard. The working mother enjoys the traditional Mother’s day
custom of breakfast cooked by her family and served to her on a tray in bed. Later in that day,
it’s also traditional for the extended family group to get together for dinner, either in a
restaurant or in one of their homes.
Flower is an important part of Mother’s day. Mothers are often given a plant for the
occasion, particularly if they are elderly.
Father’s Day is celebrated through out the United States and Canada on the third Sunday
in June. The holiday customs are similar to Mother’s Day. Dad also receives greeting cards and
gifts from his family and enjoys a day of leisure.

Mark Twain was a famous American writer. His real name was Samuel Langhorne Clemens and
“Mark Twain” was his pen name. He was born in a small town on the Missouri River in the USA. The boy had
many friends at school and when he became a writer, he described them in his stories. When he was twelve,
his father died and the boy began to work and learned the profession of a printer. He always wanted to be a
sailor and when he was twenty, he found work on a river boat. Then he left the boat and lived in California.
Here he began writing short stories under the name of Mark Twain. He sent them to newspapers. The readers
liked his stories very much. His best novel “The Adventure of Tom Sawyer” was published in 1876.
