I. Cách dùng mạo từ không xác định A/ An
1. Dùng với danh từ chỉ nghề nghiệp
Ex: I am a teacher
2. Dùng với danh từ đếm đợc số ít mà không đợc xác định bởi bất cứ một mệnh đề hay cụm từ nào
Ex: She is just a baby
II. Cách dùng mạo từ xác định THE
1. Dùng mạo từ xác định trớc các danh từ đợc lặp lại lần thứ hai trở lên
Ex: There is a bedroom and a living room. The bedroom is big.
2. Trớc các danh từ chỉ vật duy nhất
Ex: The moon is full tonight
3. Trớc danh từ đợc xác định bởi các mệnh đề hay cụm từ theo sau
Ex: This is the man I told you
4. Trớc các danh từ số ít chỉ chủng loại
Ex: The lion is fast disappearing
5. Trớc tên các nhạc cụ
Ex: She cant play the piano but she can play the guitar
6. Trớc tên các đại dơng, sông , dãy núi
Ex: The Thames flows into the North Sea
7. Trớc tên một quốc gia có hai từ hay tận cùng bằng số nhiều
Ex: Have you ever lived in the United States?
8. Trớc dạng so sánh nhất, số thứ tự
Ex: She is the tallest in my class.
III- Không dùng mạo từ xác định THE trong những trờng hợp sau:
1. Before lake , mountain in singular
Ex: lake Geneva
2. Before common nouns
Ex : I love flower
3. Before attractive nouns
Ex: Freedom , happiness
4. Before names of subjects

Ex: mathematics
5. Before names of nations with one word
Ex: china , France
6. Before names of sports
Ex : baseball , basketball
7. Before holiday , occasion
Ex : Christmas , Thanksgiving
8. Before names of stars
Ex : Venus , Mars
9. Before names of college or University, before nouns with ordinal number after
Ex : Da Nang University, World war One
10. One names of continents
Ex: Europe , Africa
11. Before names of states
Ex : Florida , Ohio , California
12. Before names of meals :
Ex: Dinner , lunch , breakfast
13. Before names of towns , provinces street , square
