One of the most urgent environmental problems in the world today is the shortage of clean water. Having
clean drinking water is a basic human right. But acid rain, industrial pollution and garbage have made many
sources of water undrinkable. Lakes, reservoirs and even entire seas have become vast pools of poison. Lake
Baikal in Russia is one of the largest lakes in the world. It contains a rich variety of animals and plants, including
1300 rare species that do not exist anywhere else in the world. But they’re being destroyed by massive volumes of
industrial effluent which pour into the lake every day. Even where law existed, the government didn’t have the
power to enforce them. Most industries simply ignore the regulations. The Mediterranean Sea occupies 1% of the
world’s water surface. But it’s the dumping ground for 50% of all marine pollution. Almost 16 countries regularly
throw industrial wastes a few miles off shore.
Water is free to everyone. A few years ago, people thought that the supply of clean water in the world was
limitless. Today, many water supplies have been ruined be pollution and sewage. Clean water is now scarce, and
we’re at last beginning to respect this precious source. We should do something now !

In the United States and Canada, it is very important to look a person directly in the eyes when you are
having a conversation with him or her. If you look down or to the side when the other person is talking, that
person will think that you are not interested in what he or she is saying. This, of course, is not polite. If you look
down or to the side when you are talking, you may appear to be hiding something; that is, it might seem that you

eyes. These social “rules” are the same for two men, two women, a man and a woman, or an adult and a child.

ENDANGERED SPECIES
Recent research reveals that the degradation of agricultural soils, forests, woodlands, coastal fisheries, and
wild resources is more and more serious .The majority of the estimated costs of environmental degradation comes
from forests and natural resources are being depleted at an alarming rate. More than 50% of the original forest has
been converted to agricultural land by slash-and-burn. Despite land expansion, productivity has declined because
of soil erosion. Fish, timber, and non-timber forest product stocks are decreasing. As a result, coastal towns have
begun to experience severe water shortages. Hydropower is dropping. Wildlife populations and biodiversity are in
serious decline and many species face extinction. Poor forest management and soil degradation result in huge
economic losses. The degradation of water increase the costs and reduces the quality of both water and power.
The prospects for economic development and poverty reduction are dependent on natural resources. Natural
households rely on natural resources for their livelihoods, fisheries, and wildlife which provide protein in diets.
Urban economic activities depend on reliable hydroelectric power. However, people do not have much awareness
of protecting the environment on which their life depends.

Our demand for water is constantly increasing. Every year there are more and more and more people in

the world. Factories turn out more and more products and need more and more water. We live in a world of
water. But almost all of it – about 97% - is in the oceans. This water is too salty to be used for drinking , farming,
and manufacturing .Only about 3 % of the world ‘s water is fresh. Most of this water is not easily available to man
because it is locked in glaciers and icecaps.
There is as much water on earth today as there ever was or will ever be. Most of the water we use finds its
way to the oceans. There, it is evaporated by the sun. It then falls back to the earth as rain. Water is used and
reused over again. It is never used up. Although the world as a whole has plenty of fresh water, some regions are
always too dry, and others too wet .A region that usually gets enough rain may suddenly have a serious dry spell
and another region may be flooded with too much rain.

Some people have complained about this year's collection, New Writing 3, although I cannot understand
why, surely 500 pages of original writing of this quality, for £6.99, is pretty amazing.
Fiction - both parts of novels and complete short stories - makes up most of the book. There are some
enjoyable pieces by famous writers, such as Candia McWilliam and Rose Tremain. It's a strange fact that the less
well-known people seem to have written mainly about food. Take my advice about Jane Harris's Those Nails - this
piece should definitely not be read just after meals. It contains some very unpleasant scenes which could turn your
stomach!
There is fine work from nineteen poets, including R.S. Thomas and John Burnside. There are pieces from
novels-in-progress by Jim Crace and Jane Rogers. Finally, there is a little non-fiction, which includes a very funny
article by Alan Rusbridger on certain newspapers, and an extraordinary piece about herself from Ursula Owen.
This is an exceptional collection and I for one can't wait to see what next year's choice will include.

Ever since humans have inhabited the earth, they have made use of various forms of communication.
Generally, this expression of thoughts and feelings has been in the form of oral speech. When there is a language
barrier, communication is accomplished through sign language in which motions stand for letters, words, and
ideas. Tourists, the deaf, and the mute have had to make use of this form of expression. Many of these symbols of
whole words are very picturesque and exact and can be used internationally; spelling, however, cannot.
Body language transmits ideas or thoughts by certain actions, either intentionally or unintentionally. A wink
can be a way of flirting or indicating that a party is only joking. A nod signifies approval, while shaking the head
indicates a negative reaction.
Other forms of non-linguistic language can be found in Braille (a system of raised dots read with fingertips),
signal flags, Morse code, and smoke signals. Road maps and picture signs also guide, warn, and instruct people.
While verbalization is the most common form of language, other systems and techniques also express human
thoughts and feelings.

In 1960, Laura Ashley, a housewife with young children, began designing and selling clothes. After some
early success, her husband, Bernard, an experienced businessman, joined her and was able to provide
considerable help and advice. The business expanded rapidly. Laura had started working at home, and soon there
were several "Laura Ashley" shops where women could buy pretty, traditional clothes in a country style, made of
natural materials. By the 1980s, the company had developed into a multi-million pound international organization
with branches in places as far apart as London, Brussels, San Francisco and Tokyo.
Laura Ashley was a woman of simple tastes and strong moral beliefs. She was born in Wales and one of her
largest factories producing clothes was situated in the countryside there. Her employees were encouraged to lead
healthy lives, enjoy the fresh air and a good diet. Many of the Ashley family were involved in the business, but in
1985 it was decided that the public should be given the opportunity to invest money in the company. Obviously
this was a major development and a clear sign of commercial success. But the woman whose ideas had been the
basics of the company's development did not live to see it. She fell down the stairs while staying at a friend's
house and died in hospital a few days afterwards. She was only sixty-one.
