A. VAI TRÒ CỦA ðẠI TỪ QUAN HỆ

Ex: a. The man/who is standing at the door / is my teacher.
b. My son is the boy/ whom you see at the desk.
+ Câu (a) có hai mệnh ñề:
- The man is my teacher.
- who is standing at the door.
Theo nguyên tắc chung, mỗi từ trong câu chỉ có thể giữ một chức năng. “The man” ñã làm chủ ngữ cho
ñộng từ “is” ở mệnh ñề chính thì không thể làm chủ ngữ cho ñộng từ “is” ở mệnh ñề chính thì không thể
làm chủ ngữ cho ñộng từ “is standing” ở mệnh ñề phụ nữa. Phải dùng ñại từ quan hệ “who” ñể thay thế
cho “the man” làm chủ ngữ cho “is standing”.

B. MỆNH ðỀ TÍNH NGỮ (ADJECTIVE CLAUSE)

Xét từ hai thí dụ trên, ta thấy những mệnh ñề phụ bắt ñầu bằng ñại từ quan hệ có tính chất như những tính
ngữ bổ nghĩa (xác ñịnh, làm rõ…) cho danh từ (hoặc ñại từ) ñứng trước nó. ðó là loại mệnh ñề tính ngữ.

: Người ta thường dùng “who” hơn “that” (xem thêm ở dưới, mục 3 trong những trường hợp dùng
“that”)

The man whom you are speaking to is my teacher.

Chú ý
: Người ta có thể dùng Whom hay that. Nhưng trong văn nói, người ta cũng dùng Who.
Ex: The man who you are speaking to is my teacher.

Người ta cũng có thể ẩn ñại từ quan hệ.
Ex: The doctor she visited is my brother.
The man you are speaking to is my teacher.
(xem mục “Khi nào có thể ẩn ñược ñại từ quan hệ xác ñịnh”)

+ Chỉ sở hữu: (whose)
Ex: Mr. X is the barber whose shop is opposite my house.

b. Thay cho vật:

+ Làm chủ ngữ (which, that)
Ex: The pencil which is lying on the desk is mine
(that)
You can see the plane which is flying over our head.
(that)
Chú ý
: Người ta thường dùng which hơn that. (xem thêm mục “Những trường hợp chỉ dùng that”)

+ Làm tân ngữ (which, that)
The flowers which I cut this morning are still fresh.
(that)
The picture which you are talking about is very beautiful.
(that)

: Người ta thường dùng which hơn that. (xem thêm mục “Những trường hợp chỉ dùng that”) hoặc
người ta có thể ẩn ñược:
Ex: The flowers I cut this morning are still fresh.
The picture you are talking about is very beautiful.
ðại từ quan hệ xác ñịnh chủ ngữ không thể ẩn ñược. Chỉ có thể ẩn ở trường hợp nó làm tân ngữ.
Trường hợp tân ngữ trực tiếp (direct object)
Ex: The man (whom) you see at the door is my friend.
(that)
The flowers (which) I cut this morning are still fresh.
(that)

2. NHỮNG TRƯỜNG HỢP THƯỜNG CHỈ DÙNG “THAT”

Như trên ñã chú thích người ta thường dùng who, whom, which hơn that, tuy nhiên trong một số trường
hợp người ta thường dùng that nhiều hơn như:
- Sau một tính từ ở dạng so sánh tuyệt ñối (superlative).

- Sau all, any, only, it is
- Khi từ ñứng trước bao gồm cả người lẫn vật.

ðiền vào chỗ trống bằng ñại từ quan hệ xác ñịnh thích hợp.

4. What’s the name of the boy… came here yesterday?
5. The butcher… shop is opposite my house… always sells good meat.
6. Do you know the man… lives opposite my house?
7. I gave him all the stamps… I had.
8. Show me the picture of… you are talking about.
9. Is the street… leads to your school very wide?
10. The boy… is sitting next to me is not very clever.

11. Any man… listens to you is a fool.
12. He is the most intelligent boy… I have ever met.
13. He is a man… word you can rely on.
14. He is the boy… father came to see you yesterday.

Ẩn ñại từ quan hệ xác ñịnh trong trường hợp có thể ñược (nếu cần có thể chuyển vị trí của giới từ)
1. The concert to which we listened came from England.
2. The old man who lives next door is a famous doctor.
3. He is the only man that can solve this problem.
4. The people whom you lived with in Hai Phong are coming to see you.
5. I know the boy whom you are talking about.
6. The pen which I lost was a good one.
7. The boy who threw that stone will be punished.
8. Where is the shop which sells picture-postcards?
9. Did you give him all the books that you had?
10. The knife which we use to cut the bread is very sharp.
11. The glass out of which you are drinking hasn’t been washed.

3. ðẠI TỪ QUAN HỆ KHÔNG XÁC ðỊNH (Non-defining Relative Pronouns)

ðại từ quan hệ không xác ñịnh giới thiệu một mệnh ñề tính ngữ không có nhiệm vụ xác ñịnh rõ danh từ
(hoặc ñại từ) mà nó hợp với. Danh từ ñó tự nó ñã xác ñịnh rồi. Mệnh ñề tính ngữ này chỉ có giá trị thêm ý,
và ñược gọi là mệnh ñề tính ngữ không xác ñịnh. Những ñại từ quan hệ không xác ñịnh là:

Ghi nhớ:
1. Không dùng that.
2. Trong bất cứ trường hợp nào cũng không ẩn ñược.
3. Mệnh ñề tính ngữ không xác ñịnh bao giờ cũng ñặt giữa hai dấu phẩy (,)

+ Làm tân ngữ: Whom
My brother Nam, whom you saw yesterday, wants to speak to you.

Chú ý:
Vị trí của giới từ about ở câu thí dụ thứ 2.

+ Chỉ sở hữu: Whose
Chopin, whose works are world-famous, was born in Poland.

b. Thay cho vật:

+ Làm chủ ngữ: Which
Budapest, which is on the Danube, is a beautiful city.
Swimming, which is a good sport, make us strong.

+ Làm tân ngữ: Which
Air, which we breathe, is made up of many gases.
Geometry, which he knows nothing about, seems a very dull subject for him.
or: Geometry, about which he knows nothing, seems a very dull subject for him.

ðiền ñại từ quan hệ vào các câu sau:

4. MỘT SỐ ðIỂM CẦN LƯU Ý

a. Mệnh ñề tính ngữ có thể bắt ñầu bằng: Where, when, why (gọi là phó từ quan hệ)

+ When: in/on which.
Dùng thay cho danh từ chỉ thời gian.
Ex: I remember the day when we first met (mệnh ñề xác ñịnh).
We will put off the picnic until the next week, when the weather may be better (mệnh ñề không xác ñịnh).

+ Where: in/at which.
Dùng thay cho danh từ chỉ nơi chốn.
Ex: This is the house where he lived with his parents in his childhood (mệnh ñề xác ñịnh).
They went to Ba Dinh square, where they would attend a big meeting (mệnh ñề không xác ñịnh).

+ Why: for which.
Dùng thay cho dành từ chỉ nguyên nhân, lý do.
Ex: I know the reason why he was so angry.
The reason why he came is not very convincing.

b.What cũng có trường hợp dùng làm ñại từ quan hệ.
Nó có ñặc ñiểm là không thay cho một danh từ hay ñại từ nào ñứng trước nó, và do ñó tương ñương với:
- the thing that (cái mà… ñiều mà…)
- the things that (những cái mà… những ñiều mà…)
Ex: Tell me what you want to know.
When she sees what you have done, she will be furious…
