1. As a financial planner, Mr David has a comprehensive of the legal process,
as well as financial and tax issues
A) knowledge
B) opinion
C) ability
D) collector
Vì knowledge vừa là danh từ ko đếm được, vừa là danh từ đếm được số ít, và hay dùng
với of/about
2. The airline requested a confirmation call to ensure a seat on my flight back home.
A. Confirm
B. Confirmed
C. Confirming
D. Confirmation
The key to this question is to understand that travellers must reiterate a confirmation of
reservationto ensure a seat on the return trip.
3. Only after repeated requests by the tenants did the superintendent do something about
the broken intercoms in some of the apartments.
A. Repeat
B. Repeated
C. Repeating => Incorrect
D. Repetition
The key to this question is to look for an adjective that defines the nature of the requests made by
the tenants. Since the tenants had to repeat their requests several times before the
superintendent did anything about the broken intercoms, the adjective must be "repeated".
Repeating is incorrect because it will be acting as a verb, and not as an adjective in this context.
Confirmed is not a correct word to use in this context due to its meaning. What is a confirmed
call? It means that the traveler will call (the call is confirmed), but the topic or the subject of the
call may not be. On the other hand, confirmation implies a confirmation of the reservation.
That’s the reason why the airlines will use the phrase “confirmation call” instead of “confirmed
call”.
4. Please find attached our sales order list and contents in detail.

a) attach
b) attachment
c) attaching
d) attached
The key to this question is to understand that the sender wants to attach all details of the sales
order list and contents with the outgoing letter or email.
Because of the verb find, you will need to look for an adjective or a past particple acting as an
adjective to satisfy the following syntax:
To find (something/someone) + adjective
or
To find + past particple + something
Ex.
I find the books very interesting to read
He found enclosed with his letter a beautiful thank you note from his students => another way
of saying => He found a beautiful thank you note from his students that was enclosed with his
letter
Please find attached our sales order list and contents in detail => another way of saying =>
Please find our sales order list and contents in detail that are attached.
5. Our company prides itself on making many special recreational and
educational programs available… to its workers.
A. presentable
B. reachable
C. available
D. enjoyable
The key to this rather straight forward vocabulary question is to understand the idiomatic
expression
to make (something, someone) available to (someone) => supply someone with
someone or something
Ex. The company made a car available to the sales staff
The teacher made his lectures available on line to his students

Despite a hectic campaign schedule, the presidential candidate managed to make himself
available tothe press for an interview.
6. A spokesman for the board of directors announced that the chairman will step
down if and when it becomes necessary.
A. if
B. there
C. then
D. so
The key to this question is to understand that there are two required conditions for the chairman
to step down:
if it becomes necessary and when it becomes necessary

7. The acting medical superintendent will be replaced by someone (who is)…most qualified.
for the position.
A. qualified
B. more qualified
C. most qualified
D. more qualifications
The key to this question is to understand that the missing word must be an adjective.
Therefore, choice 4 can be ruled out immediately since it is a noun. Of the remaining choices, it is
a question of degree. Obviously, the superintendent must be replaced by someone who is most
(or best) qualified for the position.8.
8. All personnel are required to participate in professional development programs and to
submit program evaluations
A. some of
B. every
C. most
D. all
The key to this question is to understand that the requirements for professional development
programs apply to everyone without exception. Therefore, choice 1 and 3 can be ruled out.

Choice 2 can be ruled out because the verb tense is plural (are).
1. I will be at lunch with a client for the next hour and a half, but I leave my cell phone on should
you need to reach me for anything.
a. on
b.behind
c.for
d.in
This is a rather straightforward vocabulary question. In this context, “on” is an adjective and
means “being in operation”. Ex. The TV is on. Did you leave the light on when you left the
house?
2. While they may have annual goals, budgets, performance reports, few professionals have a
ready answer to question such as these
a. but
b. few
c. most of
d. a lot
The key to this question is the conjunction “while”, which means “although” in this context.
Therefore, the second part of the sentence will be in contrast with the first one.
The sentence means “although many professionals may know about annual goals, budgets, etc.
few of them can respond quickly to these questions”
Because of the contrast logic, C and D can be ruled out immediately. A can be ruled out as its
meaning doesn’t fit with the rest of the sentence.
3. They will give vegetarians, body builders, and the health-conscious alike renewed energy if
taken as directed.
a. as
b. alike => (adv) in the same manner, to the same degree
c. such as
d. on
The key to this question is to understand that the missing blank would need to be an adverb to
modify the verb “give”. The sentence means “If taken as directed, they (the pills) will give

renewed energy equally to vegetarians, body builders and the health conscious.
Other choices are not appropriate since they don’t convey similar meanings.
4. We are concerned about whether or not the circulation of fresh air is more than adequate to
keep people cool and breathing fresh air.
a. more than
b. throughout
c. quite a
d. enough
The key to this question is the expression “is _adequate” where adequate is an adjective.
Therefore, the missing blank would need to be something that would indicate the degree of this
adjective => more or less adequate than what is currently available. Choice A is correct as it fits
with the missing blank requirement.

Can you explain more precise about question 1, 3 and 4
In number 1:
I've never seen "should" placed in this position. for example Should I/we but they're questions

number 3:
I think "as" is the same meaning like alike, in this context. Is it right?

number 4:
what is the grammar point about more than?
Why dont we use "more". I think that "more than" is usually before nouns. For example, there are
no more than three cars
Should can be used with a statement, not necessarily only with a question. When should is
placed before a subject in a statement, it means “if”. It’s a polite form of saying “if”

Here is the definition of should in such a situation from the Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary:
should
(formal) used to refer to a possible event or situation

If you should change your mind, do let me know.
In case you should need any help, here's my number.
Should anyone call (= if anyone calls), please tell them I'm busy.
I leave my cell phone on should you need to reach me for anything => I leave my cell phone
on if you need to reach me for anything.
Although “as” also means “to the same extent, equally”, its usage in a sentence is completely
different from that of “alike”. Note the distinction in the following examples:
John is a good boss. He treats everyone equally.
John is a good boss. He treats everyone alike.
John is a good boss. He treats Jim the same way as he does Jane. He treats
Jim as equally as Jane.
When as is used to mean “to the same extent, equally”, it cannot be used alone.
The child sang as sweetly as a nightingale
And not
The child sang as sweetly
You can use “more than” with adjective. Here is a definition of “more than” from the Cambridge
Advanced Learner's Dictionary & Thesaurus
more than
Definition
very
It's more than likely that there's oil here under the ground.
I was more than a little (= I was very) curious about the whole business.
formal We will be more than glad/happy/willing to help you in any way we can.
(Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary & Thesaurus © Cambridge University Press)
You cannot use "more" in the given question because you would need than after "adequate" plus
a few more phrases to make grammatical sense.
We are concerned about whether or not the circulation of fresh air is more adequate (than
currently available => has to be added to make the sentence grammatically correct) to
keep people cool and breathing freash air
However, with "more than" meaning "very" or "extremely", the sentence is grammatically correct.

If you haven’t started using a monolingual dictionary and thesaurus to study English, please do so
now. Discontinue using a bilingual dictionary once you have acquired a minimum level of English
vocabulary. You won’t make much progress in English until you start using a monolingual
dictionary and memorize usage examples associated with each word. Pay close attention to the
English syntax structure in these examples, and start thinking the same way whenever you want
to write or say something. Questions on any English language tests will start making sense to you
once you get a hang of English syntax and word usage.
There is no dout at all that you are performing a superb sort of English. Although so jealous of
your skills , very thankful
To be honest, I always use oxford advanced dic for looking up words , it's my habit for nearly a
year. But there are some rare and strange grammar points I've never ever seen as above

Btw, can you give me more detail about phrasal verb "make sense", I see it is used alot in many of
contexts.

5.Educap does not share or otherwise disclose your nonpublic information to any other
entitiesexcept as required or permitted by applicable law

a. without
b. except
c. barring

d. including

The key to this question is to understand that the second part of the sentence will refer to some
exception to the first part (does not share or otherwise disclose).

The syntax structure of the second part indicates that only except would be the right choice
=> except as

Without => doesn’t need as
Barring => doesn’t need as
Including => doesn’t need as

6. When you go to the warehouse on Tuesday, ask to speak to the loading crew foreman, whom
you will find on the loading platform.

a. tell
b. remind
c. ask
d. inform

Only ask to speak is correct in this sentence. Other phrases (tell to speak, remind to speak, and
inform to speak) are not grammatically acceptable.

Tell someone that I want to speak => OK
Remind someone that I want to speak => OK
Inform someone that I want to speak => OK

7. The 60,000 seat-stadium built for multi-sports events in 1992 has since fallen into disrepair
and is now in need of renovation, as have the country’ other man sport venues.

a. since
b. hardly
c. about
d. even

Since is the only word that makes sense in this context => Since its first construction in 1992,
the stadium has fallen into disrepair => the stadium has deteriorated over time
Has hardly fallen into disrepair => this would mean the stadium is still in good shape
Has about fallen into disrepair => this syntax is suspect. The correct syntax would read “is about
to fall into disrepair”
Has even fallen into disrepair => the use of intensive “even” is inappropriate as this would indicate
that the stadium suddenly fell into disrepair now.

8. If people really knew how much harm liquor does to their body, I doubt if any people would
drink it

a. does
b. makes
c. affects
d. forms

This is a straightforward vocabulary question as the correct expression is “to do harm” and not
“to make, affect or form harm”.
9.Ms. Ellen was away from the office on the day of meeting; nevertheless, she was able to
participate inthe use of teleconferencing.
a. for
b. through
c. in

d. around

Participate almost always goes with the preposition in

10. If your business has growing financial needs, our customer service manager will take the
time to understand your business and work with you to customize the products and services that
meet your unique business needs.
a. growing => increasing
b. grown
c. growth
d. to grow

The missing blank must be filled with an adjective since this is the proper syntax. Therefore, C and
D can be eliminated right away. Although B, as a past participle, can function as an adjective, it
doesn't make sense in this situation since a financial need is not something one can grow.

11. Lord Browne, chief executive of BP PLC, has orderd dozens of senior managers to stand aside
while directors conduct a (an) inquiry into last month’s climb-down on production targets.
a. research
b. gaze
c. inquiry
d. work

This is a straightforward vocabulary question. B and D can be ruled out immediately. A can be
ruled out since research is mostly used when one wants to discover something related to science
or prove a theory.
I completely agree with you that "participate" usually accompanied by preposition "in". Apparently,
I chose "c" . But I was really surprised at the final result as above. What's wrong?
According to the answer key, "participate + in" tends to be used before nouns such as
event,concert, club

My mistake. I didn't pay close attention to the phrase "the use of teleconferencing". Through in
this context means "by way of".

Normally, participate would be accompanied by in, i.e participate in a meeting.

However, in this case, the sentence was describing a situation where a participant is away
and can only participate via (or through, or by way of) the use of teleconferencing.

This is a good question as the evident answer is sometimes not the correct one in a particular
context.
12.The effective use of landscaping spells the difference between having a garden or simply a
collection of plants

a. meets => doesn't agree with the logic with the sentence
b. notices => doesn't explain the logic of the sentence
c. spells => signifies
d. recognizes => this would not explain why "effective use of landscaping" is necessary

The key to this question to understand the cause and effect of the effective use of landscaping.
What is the purpose of this effective use? It is to make the difference between having a garden or
just a collection of plants.

spell in this context means to add up to, to signify

To add up to; signify: Their unwise investment could spell financial ruin.

13. Contrary to the popular view that sale gurus must be physically close to their
prospective clients, Nuvo ended up hiring Florida’s Jim Williams.

a. Contrary => opposite to. Fits with logic of the sentence
b. Conducive => doesn't fit logically
c. Preferable => doesn't fit
d. Adequate => doesn't fit

The key to this question is to recognize that the second part of the sentence describes an action
that doesn't conform to popular belief. Some knowledge of US geography would be useful here
too. Nuvo is a company based in Cincinnati, Ohio that is probably thousands of miles away from
Florida. Therefore, if Nuvo hires someone from far away, the company is doing something that
would be contrary to (opposite to) popular thinking.

14. In addition to engaging consumers, informing profesionals and advocating policy reform, Last
Acts Partnership will provide education, service and counselling to people who need accurate and
reliable information about end-of-life care.

a. agreeing => requires preposition "to" or "with" after it
b. surendering => requires preposition "to" after it
c. interfering => requires preposition "in" or "with" after it
d. engaging => involving => right meaning and correct grammar

Although this question is a rather straightforward vocabulary question, a student well-versed in
grammar, especially in preposition usages, could gess at the correct answer through a process of
elimination without knowing what "engaging" means.
You misunderstood the phrasal verb “end up”. It doesn’t mean “stop”. On the contrary, it means
“turn out to be, become eventually, arrive especially by a circuitous or lengthy route or

process” (Collins English Dictionary – Complete and Unabridged © HarperCollins Publishers 1991,
1994, 1998, 2000, 2003)

Nuvo ended up hiring Florida’s Jim Williams => After a lengthy selection process, Nuvo finally
hired Jim Williams from Florida.

This decision from Nuvo ran counter to the popular practice of hiring good sales managers closer
to their respective clients. Since Nuvo is based in Ohio, their clients cluster mostly in the Midwest,
thousands of miles away from Florida. However, Jim Williams was probably the best candidate that
Nuvo could find for its vacant sales manager position, and they were willing to buck the normal
practice to hire him.

15. Essential of Professional Cooking presents a streamlined approach to the basics of
professional food preparation.

a. technique
b. access
c. approach
d. means

doing things. Streamlined is the past participle of streamline, which means to modernize or
improve effiency of.

board of directors

a. reservation

b. appointment
c. resignation
d. connection

Another straightforward vocabulary question.

17. I am well aware of the positive impact your location has on this community , and I will do
my best to contribute to your continuing efforts.

a. on
b. for
c. to
d. with

The key phrase in this question is "to have an impact on".

18. Mr. LHX is looking for another apartment, because of rising rents in the city center.

a. rising
b. rose
c. arisen
d. rise

19. In addition to displaying time, the new MC700 mobile phone shows the temperature and
user's current location on map.

a. displayed
b. displaying
c. display
d. displays

The key to this question is to know that after "in addition to", a gerund is required.

20. Although not particularly favorable, the homemade food at LHX's restaurant was unique and to
thepoint.

a. grade
b. point
c. feet
d. spot

to the point is the idiomatic expression meaning "relevant, appropriate". This expression is
usually used when referring to opinion, discussion, debate, remark etc.
Arisen is a past participle and if it used by itself, it means “being caused to rise”. Therefore, it is
incorrect to use arisen in the exam context. For arisen to be used, the sentence would need to be
modified as follows:

Mr. LHX is looking for another apartment because rents have arisen in the city center.

The difference between "rising" and "arisen" is similar to the one between "interested" vs
"interesting".

I am interested in reading interesting books

The cost of living in New York City has arisen due to rising rent cost in the city center

Respective is synonymous with “different, individual, separate”. Therefore, “our respective
customers” is probably a phrase used to distinguish with some other types of customers
mentioned earlier in a conversation. On the other hand, “our own customers” can be said at any
time.

21. Any report produced by this department should be edited and proofread thoroughly by
someone other than writer.

c. exclusively

introduced a policy of frequent job rotations.

a. Recognize
b. Recognized
c. Recognizing => -Ing form to stand for “We recognize”
d. Having been recognized

24. Our customers expect good service from us and we should do our best to live up to their
expectations.

a. in for

b. on for
c. up for
d. up to => the idiomatic expression is "to live up to someone’s expectations or
standards"

25. Experts urge small business owners to brand their business to develop both a logo and a set
of consistent marketing materials

a. brand => small business must develop a brand (something distinctive) for
consumers to recognize their products. This can be done through the use of logo and a
set of consistent marketing materials (exemplified by a slogan). For example, Nike’s
brand is distinguished by the slogan “Just do it”, and the check mark (√) logo.

b. determine
c. attract
d. deter

26. Because of the national ethanol mandate, the NACS is up in arms because they believe it
willjeopardize fuel supplies and hurt consumers, while working against the nation’s energy
independence.

a. utilize
b. hospitalize
c. patronize
d. jeopardize => cause injury or harm to. The NACS is upset (up in arms) at the
national ethanol mandate because it could cause harm to fuel supplies and hurt
consumers.

27. As far as the records show, Mrs. LHX wasn’t in the office on Monday, nor on Tuesday for that
matter.

a. no => ruled out because the syntax is wrong in this situation
b. nor => not on Monday and not on Tuesday.
c. either => this is used at the beginning, not at the end.
d. or => indicating two possibilities Monday or Tuesday
The only time a sentence can begin with a verb in an infinitive form without “to” is in an
imperative sentence.

For the exam sentence, you can’t begin it with “recognize” since it is not an imperative sentence.
Therefore, you need to either put a subject before it or use the –Ing form. This is Basic English
syntax.

For examples

Entering the room, Peter noticed that the floor was full of trash

Or

When he entered the room, Peter noticed that the floor was full of trash

And not
Enter the room, Peter noticed that the floor was full of trash

c. your visit
d. visiting => can’t use this because preposition “to” is present

30. Add a prepared sauce or other sauce ingredients and finish the sauce as indicated in the
recipe.

a. even
b. when
c. as => in the same manner or way that
d. otherwise

This is a rather straight forward vocabulary question
In number 29, can we rewrite "before you visit the shop" instead? Is it correct grammatically? =>
Yes, you can.

Note the use of before in the following situations

Before => an article, a noun, a gerund, a subject, a pronoun,

Before a house, before exiting, before he, before her,

But not
Before ≠ a verb

Regarding #28, I failed to realize that the syntax can allow for an adjective after “moisture” in this
context.

The exam question is actually a short excerpt from a paragraph about moisture in the book
entitled Professional Cooking by Wayne Gisselen, Chapter 2 Sanitation and Safety

Moisture

Bacteria require moisture to absorb food. Dry foods do not support bacterial growth. Foods with a
very high salt or sugar content are also relatively safe, because these ingredients make the
bacteria unable touse the moisture present => short for "to use the moisture (that
is) present (in the foods)"

30 => Rewrite

Add a prepared sauce or other sauce ingredients and finish the sauce in the same
manner indicated in the recipe

a. if
b. where
c. due to

d. about

This is a grammar question. The second part of the sentence after the blank is a complete
sentence. The two choices that can connect both parts of the sentence are a and b. However, in
terms of meanings, onlya is correct. Under what conditions will the residents call the apartment
manager directly? "If" describes those conditions.

only choice that connects both parts of the sentence and makes sense is d.

You can’t use “that” with “very” in this sentence. In order to use “that”, the question must be
modified as follows:

39. The response to our new employee seminar was so encouraging that the management

decided to offer another session next week

For 41, both actions (the summary was issued) and (Mr. LHX claimed) took place in the past,
and so the simple past tense was sufficient. If you use the past perfect, “before the summary was
issued, Mr. LHX had claimed the responsibilities” you would imply that the action of claiming
responsibilities took place over a period of time. The past tense implies that the claiming action
was a one-time event.

The syntax in Question 43 is much easier to understand if you analyze the sentence as follows:

What is the subject of “are handled”? => details (noun)
What characterizes these details? => they are insignificant (adjective)
How insignificant is it? (manner => adverb) seemingly => the details seemed (appeared)
insignificant

Department store managers should always keep in mind that the way seemingly insignificant
details are handled will influence the customer’s purchasing decisions => Store managers
should realize that the way some details, though appearing insignificant, were handled
could influence how customers make their purchase. For example, it has been proven that
items placed at the consumer’s eye level are more often purchased than those placed at the
bottom or the top shelves.

The questions on the conversation were a little bit tricky.

According to the conversation, Mr. X won't be back from his trip until Wednesday. The question
was "when is Mr. X expected to return (to the office)?". If Mr. X won't return home until
Wednesday, Thursday will be the earliest day that he will be back in the office.

The question was tricky because the readers had to read between the lines.

Although the woman in one instance wanted to place the ad by this weekend, she also expressed
concern about the insufficient time that they have to do it successfully, especially when the ad
must be first proofread and approved by Mr. X.

In this situation, the concern took precedence over the wish to place the ad because it would be
pretty difficult to do it, given the short time and the required approval of the ad by Mr. X.

3 Because today is the 3rd anniversary of this store, all customers having the coupons "BIG BIG"
can get an incredible discount ____ 85%.
a. at
b. for
c. by => the word discount is placed before a preposition in this syntax
d. on

The normal expression is a discount of X% in this context.

Other expressions are

He bought the hat at 10% discount

Note that "at" precedes the word discount.

How much discount did you get? I got a discount of 10%, I got it at a 10% discount, I got it for a
10% discount, the price was reduced by 10% when I got it.

In the last example, you can rewrite it as "the price was discounted by 10%".

Looking at these examples, we can say that depending on the placement of the word "discount",
you can choose certain prepositions that go with it.

In your question, since "of" was not given, by is probably the next logical preposition to use when
the word discount precedes it.

này không phải do increase ko ??? Giải thix dùm mình nhe'

The clue in this question is the ensuing expression “such a fast rate”. Since the preposition “at” is
often collocated with “a rate” in expressions such as “at a rate of, at the rate of”, “at” is the

answer.

Examples:

Prices have increased at such a fast rate that wages have not kept up with inflation.
