The computer is a wonderful machine. It is the most important invention. Almost every

century an adding machine was invented. The first large, modern computer was built in 1937.
Computers improved quickly. A few years later a computer could do 5,000 additions per
second. Today all computers have a processing unit, an arithmetic and logic unit, and a memory.
Computers are getting smaller and smaller, and computing faster and faster. Even in a very large
computer, the part that does the actual computing is about the size of the end of a finger.
Computers can work together – they can network with each other. The worldwide computer
network is called the Internet. Using Internet, you can find all kinds of information and news
from people and countries around the world.

been earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. All our guests tonight have survived the natural
disasters.

staying on Pogohiti, a small island. I was having a rest when the volcano erupted. The noise

woke me up. I looked through the window. Everybody was running towards the harbour. I just

Dear Lan,
Last Saturday I went on excursion to Oxford with my classmates. We got up early and
took a bus, so we arrived there on time. In the morning we visited the National Gallery, Big Ben
and the Hyde Park. They were very interesting. In the afternoon I bought a dictionary and a
small disk with the words “Oxford University”. I met some English students in the bookshop. I
was happy to practice speaking English with them. Although we felt a bit tired, we all had a nice
trip.
