“Young Monkey Flower put up a sign;
The fairy babies simply race
“Keep Out! This honey is all mine!”
Each night to Madame Queen Anne’s Lace;
“But Bumble Bee just went ahead,
Cuddled so warmly to her breast
“I’m sure that don’t mean me,” he said.
She gives each babe a good night’s rest.

Said Silverrod, “My cousins all
By dainty Yellow Adder’s Tongue
Wear robes of gold the livelong fall;
Such fairy elfin songs are sung
It’s unbecoming to me quite,
That fairy folk come trooping out
And so I dress in creamy white.”
To hear what it is all about!

If through the woods you’ll walk in May,
Stately Madame Cardinal Flower
You’ll see the Bellwort children play
Holds receptions by the hour;
At hide and seek, in yellow coats
Invites those whom she likes the best,
With their wee cousins, sweet Wild Oats.
And Hummingbird’s her favorite guest.

“Baby Blue Eyes comes in spring,
Day Flower wears a gown of blue
“Dainty, dimpled, smiling thing;
That only lasts her one day through;
“Calls to us from far away,
Her mother must be busy quite,
“Won’t you please come out to play?”
To make a new one every night.

When fire fiends through the woodland race
Large Purple Orchis loves to grow
Leaving a blackened, barren place
Where crowds of people do not go;
Then Fireweed knows that it’s his duty
But you’re quite welcome, if you’ll tramp
To make the burned land bloom with beauty.
To where she lives (it’s rather damp).

Pasque Flower is a prairie child,
Yellow Star Grass hides in play
Doesn’t wait ’till days are mild,
Among the grasses every day;
But, wrapped in furs, she trips along
But when you call, “I spy,” she’s fair;
Before the Robin sings his song.
Then you can find her anywhere!
