Kinh nghiệm xương máu cho những ai sắp thi là: Keep practising constantly and pay
particular attention to time management skills.
Sau đây là đề thi, phần làm bài chi tiết và những kinh nghiệm của mình:
* READING
Có 3 đoạn:
- Đoạn 1 về the effects of Roman soldiers' occupation in Britain.
- Đoạn 2 về glacier và các nghiên cứu về glaciation.
- Đoạn 3 về ecosystem
Mình thấy đề Reading khá khó. Có cảm giác như bài thi dài hơn những bài practice trong Kaplan,
Barron (hoặc do làm under time pressure nên cảm thấy thế). Mình thấy độ khó của nó chẳng
kém bao nhiêu so với reading trong GRE. Có đoạn mình ko hiểu mấy. Có câu hỏi mình phải suy
nghĩ nát óc rồi đành chọn bừa chứ không sure lắm. Nên nếu mọi người ôn song song phần
reading của GRE nữa thì cũng hỗ trợ cho reading của TOEFL nhiều lắm. Ngoài ra, nên đọc các bài
về academic topics, mặc dù thấy nó chán ốm. Như thế, mình sẽ quen với các academic passages,
nên khi đọc bài thi thật, mình sẽ thấy đỡ "bored to death".
Mình có 1 kinh nghiệm hơi dở trong bài đọc đầu là: Khi thấy trên screen hiện ra mỗi passage chứ
ko có câu hỏi, mình đã bị bất ngờ, vì thấy format khác với đề thi thử trong Kaplan. Trong Kaplan
thì vào đề reading là màn hình chia làm 2 phần, 1 bên là câu hỏi, 1 bên là bài đọc. Do đó, khi
vào thi, mình hơi bất ngờ vì format khác. Sau đó, mình dành khá nhiều thời gian (khoảng hơn 5
phút) để đọc toàn bộ passage trước khi chuyển qua câu hỏi. Ai ngờ click Continue xong thì thấy
format giống Kaplan. Vậy kinh nghiệm là, mọi người đừng mất thời gian đọc passage khi nó hiện
ra nhé! Click luôn Continue để chuyển qua câu hỏi, vì khi đó cả câu hỏi và passage đặt song song
nhau nên rất dễ đọc, dễ đối chiếu lại tiết kiệm time.
Để tìm được đáp án đúng thì phải tìm được ideas trong bài support cho đáp án đó. Khi ôn, có 1
số câu, mình phân vân mãi giữa 2 đáp án rồi cuối cùng lại chọn đáp án sai. Cho nên, mình rút ra
kinh nghiệm là tìm ideas trong bài support cho đáp án để double-check thì tìm ra đáp án đúng 1
cách chính xác hơn.
* LISTENING
Mình thấy listening không khó bằng BARRON'S.
Tuy nhiên, một chuyện cười ra nước mắt là mình lại ... buồn đi vệ sinh ngay sau khi kết thúc
phần Reading. Mình đã giơ tay xin đi vệ sinh trước khi phần Listening bắt đầu, nhưng ko được

phép. Tệ hơn nữa là mình trúng phải phần Experimental Listening, nghĩa là phải nghe thêm 1
conversation và 2 lectures. Thế là hơi khó chịu vì phải nhịn ... 100 phút trong lúc làm Listening.
Kinh nghiệm: Mình đã bị 1 vố tương tự với lần thi GRE (lần đó mình mất gần 4 phút trong phần
Verbal để chạy đi vệ sinh vì WC ở khá xa). Lần này, mình đã cẩn thận là ko uống tí nước lọc nào
từ lúc ngủ dậy. Nhưng cuối cùng lại bị mẹ thuyết phục uống 1 cốc nước cam. Lợi bất cập hại thế
đấy. Nên tốt nhất là mọi người đừng uống 1 chút nước nào cả trước khi đi thi nhé! Thi xong
Reading và Listening được break 10 phút, khi đó uống 1 chút + ăn cái gì nhẹ nhàng là được.
* SPEAKING


Đây là phần tệ nhất của mình:
- Independent Tasks
Đen đủi là đề thi ko trùng một chút xíu nào với mấy chục topics mình đã practice ở nhà cả.
+ Task 1: What ability or skill is important for students.
Mình phân vân giữa critical thinking skills và communication skills. Cuối cùng mình chọn critical
thinking skills cho dễ nói vì đây là topic luận văn mình đang viết.
Chú ý: Mọi người cần chọn topic thật nhanh (trong vòng 5s) và chọn cái nào dễ support được và
gần gũi với mình nhé!
Mình nói 2 lí do:
1) not all information is reliable --> critical thinking skills help student assess information better
to get the most out of their study.
2) many companies require students to have critical thinking skills --> Critical thinking skills help
increase students' candidacy for jobs.
Chú ý: Mọi người cần nói nhanh và rõ ràng vì lúc đi thi, thời gian trôi nhanh lắm. Nếu ko nói
nhanh thì ko kịp đâu. Ngoài ra, nên có examples. Tiếc là mình chỉ đưa được reasons chứ ko có
examples để support.
+ Task 2: Do you prefer to shop online or shop in a store?
Mình chọn shop online, 2 lí do:
1) save time (not have to travel, just one click --> order items from all over the world instantly)
2) convenient and safe (indoor-->not worry about traffic, weather ...)

Trong phần trên, mình compare and contrast both options --> có thêm nhiều ý và examples để
nói.
- Integrated Tasks
+ Task 3:
Reading: policy about raising students' fares for recreational activities to upgrade and improve
facilities
Listening: two students discuss this policy. The women disagrees, the man supports.
Question: report the man's opinions + reasons.
Câu này khá dễ vì các ý đều rất rõ ràng. Mình làm đủ thời gian.
Kinh nghiệm: outline các ý của reading, take notes và outline các opinions và reasons của
listening (chia làm 2 cột, woman and man). Trong khi nghe, cố gắng đoán xem question sẽ hỏi
về opinions của ai --> form answer ngay trước khi câu hỏi bắt đầu để tiết kiệm time.
+ Task 4:
Reading: về social learning. People observe behaviors of others and copy the behaviors that
bring about desirable results and do not imitate the behaviors that lead to undesirable results.
Listening: an example of two kids following their mother to a shopping mall to illustrate the
above concept of social learning
Đây là task tệ nhất của mình. Đề ko hề khó, nếu ko muốn nói là hơi dễ. Tuy nhiên, lỗi là mình


dành quá nhiều time để summarize the reading passage. Do đó, ko có đủ thời gian để nói về
phần example trong listening.
Kinh nghiệm: Nên balance thời gian. Summarize main points in reading thật ngắn và nhanh,
phân tích sâu example trong listening để chứng minh là nó giải thích cho cái concept trong
reading ntn. Cái này chỉ có được nhờ practice nhiều. Mình mới chỉ practice 2 lần với Task 4 này,
nên thiếu kinh nghiệm và kĩ năng là điều khó tránh. Mọi người nên practice nhiều = Barron's,
Delta Key, Kaplan và Cambridge nhé!
+ Task 5:
Task này khá dễ.
Listening: about a student's scheduling problem with her teaching assignment.

Speaking: theo structure sau:
1) Stating the problem quickly and clearly
The woman has been assigned a teaching assignment which requires her to teach kids at a
school. However, she is facing a schedule problem, because she has to attend a Chinese history
class on the day she is required to teach.
2) Talking about the two solutions suggested (not go into details, just introduce the
solutions)
3) Stating your preferred solutions and reasons
If I were her, I would choose the first/latter solution (or I would change the teaching schedule by
teaching older kids on a different date instead of teaching little ones). The first reason is
.bla..bla.., the second reason is ...bla..bla ..
+ Task 6:
Bình thường thì task này là task khó nhất của TOEFL Speaking, nhưng thật may là đề hôm nay
không "khoai" lắm.
Listening: about the adaptations of albatrosses and fulmars to find scarce food resources.
Kinh nghiệm:
* khi nghe, take notes rõ ràng và outline ý ngay khi take notes.
* khi chuẩn bị và nói cũng theo outline ý rõ ràng.
Ví dụ: talk about the adaptations in two categories:
1) Albatrosses' adaptations:
Develop long wings --> glide along the wind --> reduce the energy used in finding food across
oceans
2) fulmar's adaptations:
develop strong sense of smell by the tubes in the nose cells --> find planktons easily
this is important because planktons are hard to see but emit strong ordor --> detectable for the
fulmars with strong sense of smell.
* balance time giữa các ý --> đủ thời gian để state main points and elaborate.
Chú ý: Tốt nhất là đã thi xong câu nào thì cho nó over luôn, đừng ngồi mà buồn phiền,
nghĩ ngợi nhiều về nó kẻo ảnh hưởng tới các câu khác. Hôm đi thi mình vấp phải 1 câu
integrated mình chỉ kịp summarize reading passage mà chưa đả động gì tới examples trong

lectures do thiếu thời gian. Tuy nhiên, mình vẫn bình tĩnh thi tiếp các câu sau. Mấy câu đầu đã
kéo điểm xuống nhiều nên tổng điểm Speaking của mình bị thấp. Nhưng theo detailed report thì
các câu speaking sau của mình đạt điểm tuyệt đối
* WRITING


Đây có lẽ là phần mình hài lòng nhất trong 4 phần. Tuy nhiên, giống như viết văn, có khi bài văn
mình hài lòng lại bị điểm kém, còn bài mình cảm thấy bình thường thì lại đạt điểm cao. Như hồi
mình thi GRE, viết xong cũng te tởn lắm, chắc mẩm sẽ được chừng 5-6, mà cuối cùng được có 4.
Cho nên, ko biết đâu mà lần.
- Integrated writing task:
Reading: three theories about the bees' colony collapses in late 2006 in the US
Listening: reasons and facts that challenge these theories
The task asks us to summarize the points of the lecture and explain how they challenge the
information in the passage.
Kinh nghiệm:
- Cực kỳ tập trung khi nghe để take notes được càng nhiều ý càng tốt. Sử dụng tối đa khả năng
của memory, take short notes + remember details
- Tập trung viết về lecture.
Mở bài: Ngay từ đầu state luôn: lecture talks about bla ...bla ... or the lecture questions the
credibility of the theories given in the reading about bla ... bla.
Body:
Viết về từng point trong lecture trong từng paragraph.
+ State clearly what the point is (Firstly, the lecture argues/states that ...).
+ Explain the point in more details
+ compare and contrast with the point in the passage that ....(This point counters/refutes the
idea stated in the passage that ... bla bla)
Kết luận : kết luận thật kêu để tạo ấn tượng sau cùng tốt đẹp.
Mình cũng làm theo lời khuyên của các sách là dùng những từ khó 1 cách hợp lí (VD: futile,
detrimental, relentless ..) và idiomatic expressions (come up with...) để rater đánh giá cao

vocabulary và language use của mình.
- Independent writing task:
Agree or disagree: To be well-informed, a person should get information from many
different news resources.
Mình chọn agree.
1) Introduction (generally comprising 3 parts):
- General background
We are now living in the rapidly changing world. Changes are happening in almost any field in
every country and may affect our lives to a great extent
- Elaboration of background
Therefore, it is crucial that we keep ourselves updated with news locally and internationally on a
daily basis
- Thesis statement: (topic + organization)
Thanks to their distinct advantages, we should get information from the three following news
resources: The Internet, newspapers or magazines, and TV.
2) Body:
3 paragraphs for 3 resources
+ The Internet (fast --> update. Examples: E-magazines such as the New York Times ... publish
stories minutes after they happen --> some recent news like the airplane crash in New York
which killed over 40 people yesterday, or the detrimental forest fire in Australia which led to the


death of hundreds of people...),
+ Newspapers or magazines (in-depth analysis of the news --> profound knowledge. Example:
"Students' Magazine" (Báo Sinh Viên) - my favorite magazine with the special section for famous
people giving opinions on various issues --> helpful for my study and career...)
+ TV (vivid descriptions of the news -> provoke emotions/feelings + urge people to take
practical actions. Example: News about the flood in my hometown --> moved me to tears --> led
to my practical actions: calling relatives to ask about their safety, raising fund to help mitigate the
damage ...)

3) Conclusion
+ Summarize the aforementioned points:
A combination of the three news resources is the optimal way to get the lastest, most profound
and influential news.
+ Reiterate its importance
This is essential for everyone.
Independent Writing topics có nhiều approach khác nhau. Lúc đầu mình định nghĩ đến các
reasons khác nhưng thấy khó develop ý và sợ bị trùng ý. Do đó, mình đổi sang discuss
advantages of different news resources cho dễ kết luận là tại sao combining all the three
resources is the best way to gain information. Khi chấm điểm bài essay thì ngoài topic
development, điều quan trọng nữa là language use and organization. Nếu làm tốt cả 3 phần này
thì điểm sẽ cao hơn.
