II. The past simple tense (Thì quá khứ đơn)
a. Form: (cấu trúc)
.Affirmative (khẳng định)
-. Tobe: was/ were

S + was/were + O
Ex: She was a student two years ago.
(Cô ấy đã từng là một sinh viên cách đây 2 năm)
They were in London on their summer holiday last
year.
(Họ đã ở Luân Đôn vào kỳ nghỉ hè năm ngoái.)


*Note:
- khi chủ ngữ là ngôi thứ ba số ít (He/She/It/ name) và
ngôi thứ nhất số ít (I), ta dùng đông từ tobe “was”.
- Khi chủ ngữ là các ngôi còn lại (We/ You/ They/
names), ta dùng động từ tobe “were”
Negative: (phủ định)
- Tobe: was/ were

S + was/were + not + O

Ex: She was not very happy last night because of
having lost money. (was not = wasn’t)
(Tối qua cô ấy không vui vì mất tiền.)


Ex:

We were not at home yesterday.

(were not = weren’t)
(Hôm qua chúng tôi không ở nhà.)
Interrogative (nghi vấn)
-Tobe: was/ were.
•Yes/ No questions:

Was/ Were + S + O?
Ex: Was she tired of hearing her customer’s complaint
yesterday?
(Cô ấy có mệt vì nghe khách hàng phàn nàn ngày hôm
qua không?)


Ex: Were they at work yesterday?
Hôm qua họ có làm việc không?)
⇒Yes, they were/ No, they weren’t.
• Wh – questions:

Wh – words + was/ were + S + O?

Ex:

Where were you last week?
(Bạn đã ở đâu vào tuần trước?)


b. Usage (Cách dùng)
Thì quá khứ đơn dùng để diễn tả:
- Một hành động đã xảy ra và kết thúc

trong quá khứ với thời gian được xác định
rõ. Trong câu, thường có các từ: yesterday
(hôm qua), last night/ week/ month/…
(tối/tuần/tháng.. trước), ago (cách đây), in
1990/2003 (trong năm 1990/2003), …..
Ex: She was a doctor last yesr.
(Năm ngoái cô ấy đã là một bác sĩ.)
