methods that were decided 200 years ago, or even more. In a time when people simply did not
understandthescienceoflearningaswellaswedotoday.Asaresultofthesebadideas,therearelots
ofmistakesinthewaypeoplelearnEnglishandotherlanguagestoo.Youmaybemakingoneofthese
threemistakes,whichslowEnglish-learnersdownagreatdeal.
MistakeOne:Learninginabigclassofotherstudents
DonotlearnEnglishinaclass.Ifyouareinone,considerleavingitnow.Theproblemwithclassesis
thatyouaremixedinwithagroupofotherpeople,soyouarenotspeakingallthetime.Itisnota
veryfocusedmethodoflearning.
Ihaveseenproblemswithclassesathousandtimes.Theyalwaysslowdowntothespeedoftheslower
students.It’sinevitable,impossibletoavoid.Theteacherispaidtopayattentiontoallstudentsequally.
So they take their time focusing on the slower students and making sure they are happy. The faster
studentssufferasaresult,andlearnmuchmoreslowlythantheyshoulddo.
Afterthisbookyouwillbecomeaveryfastlearner–muchtoofastforanysharedclass.
AnotherreasontoleaveEnglishclassesisthatmostofthemaresimplybadquality.Eveninsocalled
‘good’ English schools. Most English teachers do not understand the concepts in this book and use
badteachingmaterials.
On top of this most English schools want long term students who take years to learn, paying for
classes.Thereisaconflictofinteresthere.Veryfewschoolswantstudentstobeabletospeakfluently

things.Firstandforemost,weknowthatthehumanmindlearnsthroughcreativethought,individual
expressionandfreedomtolearninawaythatfeelsbesttoyou.Learningalanguageisaveryrightbrainedactivity.Itrequiresfunandahighdegreeofself-direction,drivenbythefunyouarehaving.
Soyouarekindofpulledforwardbyyourownpassionandcuriosity.
Classroomsweredesigned200yearsagotokillexactlythisprocess.Sowhyarewestillteachingand
learningthiswaytoday?
One more thing about classrooms (although I could talk about it all day). It’s quite likely that you
havebadassociationswithclassroomsinyourmind,fromyourschoolyears.Ifyou’relikemyselfor
most people, you probably don’t think of classrooms as places to have incredible fun and exciting
newdiscoveries.Thisisonemorereasonnottostepintoaclassroomeverytimeyouareaboutto
beginaprocessthatenjoysfreedom,funandself-expression–learningEnglishquickly.
Ifyou’reconcernedthatlearningEnglishorspeakingEnglishprivatelywithpeopleistooexpensive,
don’tworry.Inlaterchaptersyouwillrealizehowincrediblycheapitcanbetocommunicateallyou
likewithnativespeakers.EvencheaperthanyourEnglishclassisprobablycostingyourightnow.
Mistaketwo:Learninggrammarfirst
Childrendonotlearngrammarfirst.Theystartlearningwordstocommunicate,thenshortseriesof
wordstogethertocommunicatemore.Anditgrowsfromthere.
WheneveryoulearnEnglishfromnowon,focusoncommunicatingandformingfullsentences.As

MistakeThree:Speakingwithnon-nativespeakers
ManystudentsfeelliketheyhavetoprepareforalongtimebeforetheyarereadytospeakEnglish
withnativespeakers.Butthetruthisthebestwayyoulearnisbyspeakingwithnativespeakers,even
fromtheverybeginning.
Ifyouwerelearningtoplaytennis,youwouldn’tspendallyourtimepracticingservingalone,and
learningthetheory,andstretchingandwarmingup.Youwouldspendalittlebitoftimedoingthat,
andthenmostofthetimeactuallyplayingtennis.Evenatthestartwhenyouarenotgreatatit,you
willstillstartplayingstraightaway.
Andideallyyouwouldstartplayingtenniswithagoodtennisplayer.Butyourtennispartnerwould
understandthatyouareabeginnerandslowdown.Theywouldhelpyoutograduallygetbetterand
better.
Ofcourse,learningEnglishisthesame.
Don’twasteyourtimespeakingEnglishwithnon-nativespeakers.It’scertainlybetterthanspeaking
withnoone,butjustbeawarethatwithanon-nativespeakeryouarerepeatingeachother ’smistakes
