People have tried for over 2000 years to find a relationship (35)_____ people’s physical
features and their character, and even through there is a complete (36)______of evidence for such
an idea. It is still popular.
The Ancient Greeks were interested in the idea of human personality although they did not
link it with outward appearance. Later, during the Renaissance, some writers (37)_____ that there
was a direct connection between a person’s character and their face, and they called this new
science that would (38)______ you know a great deal about a person simply by analyzing their face.
Kings and princes were in the science, as they thought it might (39)______them to be better judges
of character, and they believed that these new skills would (40)________ it more difficult for
dishonest courtiers to (41)______ them in.
Despite the fact that nobody takes these theories seriously, nowadays scientists are still
interested in the basic idea. They have known that there is a link between a person’s character and
their build.
Extroverts and other confident, out going people are usually short and thick set, and in
contrast, people who are (42)_____and reserved tend to be (43)______ and thin. There is some
scientific basis to this theory because glands have such an important effect on both a person’s build
and their moods, so it is not (44)_____to find a link between them.

correct answer to each of the questions from 45 to 54.
Rachel Carson was born in 1907 in Springdale, Pensylvania. She studied biology at college
and zoology at Johns Hopkins University, where she received her master's degree in 1933. In 1936,
she was hired by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, where she worked most of her life.
Carson's first book, Under the Sea Wind, was published in 1941. It received excellent
reviews, but sales were poor until it was reissued in 1952. In that year she published The Sea
Around Us, which provided a fascinating look beneath the ocean's surface, emphasizing human
history as well as geology and marine biology. Her imagery and language had a poetic quality.
Carson consulted no less than 1,000 printed sources. She had voluminous correspondence and
frequent discussions with experts in the field. However, she always realized the limitations of her
non-technical readers.
In 1962, Carson published Silent Spring, a book that sparked considerable controversy. It
proved how much harm was done by the uncontrolled, reckless use of insecticides. She detailed
how they poison the food supply of animals, kill birds and fish, and contaminate human food. At
the time, spoken men for the chemical industry mounted personal attacks against Carson and issued
propaganda to indicate that her findings were flawed. However, her work was proved by a 1963

report of the president's Science Advisory Committee.

- vindicate (v): minh oan, chứng minh là đúng.
- propaganda (n): sự tuyên truyền.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the

correct answer to each of the questions from 55 to 64.
Ocean water plays an indispensable role in supporting life. The great ocean basins hold
about300 million cubic miles of water. From this vast amount, about 80,000 cubic miles of water
are sucked into the atmosphere each year by evaporation and returned by precipitation and drainage
to the ocean. More than 24,000 cubic miles of rain descend annually upon the continents. This
vastamount is required to replenish the lakes and streams, springs and water tables on which all
flora and fauna are dependent. Thus, the hydrosphere permits organic existence.
The hydrosphere has strange characteristics because water has properties unlike
those of anyother liquid. One anomaly is that water upon freezing expands by about 9 percent,
whereas most liquids contract on cooling. For this reason, ice floats on water bodies instead of
sinking to the bottom. If the ice sank, the hydrosphere would soon be frozen solidly, except for a
thin layer of surface melt water during the summer season. Thus, all aquatic life would be destroyed
and the interchange of warm and cold currents, which moderates climate, would be notably absent.
Another outstanding characteristic of water is that water has a heat capacity which is the
highest of all liquids and solids except ammonia. This characteristic enables the oceans to absorb
and store vast quantities of heat, thereby often preventing climatic extremes. In addition, water
dissolves more substances than any other liquid. It is this characteristic which helps make oceans a
great storehouse for minerals which have been washed down from the continents. In several
areas of theworld these minerals are being commercially exploited. Solar evaporation of salt is
widely practiced, potash is extracted from the Dead Sea, and magnesium is produced from sea water
along theAmerican Gulf Coast.
