UNIT 4: PARTICIPLES AND PARTICIPLE CLAUSES
(Phân từ và mệnh đề phân từ)

1. Present participles (Hiện tại phân từ): V-ING
− Ngụ ý chủ động (là tác nhân thực hiện hành động).

The film is boring. It makes me bored.
He’s an interesting teacher. He makes us interested.
2. Past Participles (Quá khứ phân từ): V3/ed
− Ngụ ý bị động (chịu tác động, ảnh hưởng của tác nhân thực hiện hành động).

It’s an exciting game. I’m really excited at it.
I’m surprised at the surprising present.
3. Present Participle clauses: Mệnh đề hiện tại phân từ
− Rút gọn mệnh đề chủ động.

Feeling tired, he went to bed early. (he felt tired)
Seeing that the job was potential, I accepted it immediately. (I saw that the job was
potential)
Rising out of the sea in front of us, the sun started to warm our faces. (the sun rose out of
the sea in front of us)
Paul loved his boxing gloves, wearing them even to bed. ( Paul loved his boxing gloves
and he wore them even to bed)
+ Dùng khi một hành động đang diễn ra thì hành động khác đột ngột xen vào.
She hurt herself cooking dinner. (= She hurt herself while she was cooking dinner = she
hurt herself while cooking dinner)
+ Dùng khi 2 hành động đang diễn ra cùng lúc.
He suddenly run out shouting. (Anh ta đột nhiên vừa chạy ra ngoài vừa hét lớn lên)


She’s jogging, singing. (Cô ta vừa đi vừa hát)

4. Past Participle clauses: Mệnh đề quá khứ phân từ
− Rút gọn mệnh đề bị động.

Seen from a distance, she appeared to be beautiful. (she was seen from a distance)
Printed on the very first press, the document was extremely valuable. (the document was
printed on the very first press)
