Others

argue

students should be made to study alone. Tell the benefits of each study
method.

Which

one do you think is more effective?
Some educationists hold the view that studying in groups is better for
students while others believe that studying alone is better. This essay shall
delve into the benefits of each study methods.
There are many benefits of studying in groups. To begin with, when you
work with other students you are able to share your ideas and experiences,
and

have

more

time

to

do

this.

For example, if every student spends just two minutes talking individually to
the teacher, the class time is soon finished. However, if students work in
groups they can spend much more time talking to the teacher than just two
minutes.

Secondly, when we study in groups this helps students practise negotiation
skills like making a contribution, agreeing or disagreeing with someone and
asking a person to give examples of their point. Finally, we can put forward
working in groups as an example of what happens in real life, in work
situations and say that studying in groups in class prepares us for this.
On the other hand, when students study alone then they have no
distractions and they can concentrate better on study. This is especially
helpful in subjects like mathematics and physics. Studying alone also
increases the confidence and ability to solve problems on one’s own.
Students become more competitive which is a necessary virtue in the
competitive era of today.
I feel that teachers should mix and match both these methods depending on
the subject and the situation. For boring subjects like history and

philosophy students should be organised into groups but for subjects that
need concentration, individual study should be encouraged. Both methods
have own importance and should complement each other rather than being
treated as rivals.
With technology speeding up, more and more young people begin to
use mobile phones and the Internet, but old people have little
chance to be exposed to them. What ways could mobile phone and
the Internet be useful to old people?
How can old people be encouraged to use this new technology?

Sample Answer 1:
It is irrefutable that the young generation today are technophiles and are
very

comfortable

with mobile phones and internet whereas the elderly are uneasy with the
latest
technological devices. This essay shall delve into how the mobile phone and
internet

could

be useful for the senior citizens and ways to encourage them to use such
technology.
Mobile phones and internet could be beneficial to old people in various
ways.

To

begin

with,

we all know that a major problem the elderly face is of social isolation.
Nuclear

families

predominate these days and even in nuclear families, children have to leave
their

parents

to

seek greener pastures abroad. Through mobile phones the elderly can
connect

with

their

kith and kin who live far away from them. For example, through the
internet,

they

can

chat

with their grandchildren and also see them through web camera.
Furthermore, the elderly face a lot of health problems. Through mobile
phone

they

can

any

time call the ambulance or their relatives and get timely medical help.
Through

the

internet

they can get consultation of any doctor in any part of the world by showing
their

digital

x-

ray or MRI scan. Another advantage of such technology to the elderly is that

they

can

entertain themselves through these gadgets. They have a lot of free time
and

they

can

listen

to religious hymns, visit sacred and holy places on the net which they can’t
otherwise

visit

because of failing health. They can also do net-banking, online shopping
and

also

book

their

rail tickets and air tickets online.
There are a lot of ways to motivate the elderly to use these equipments.
Firstly,

they

can

be

made aware of the various ways such things can help them. The
government

and

NGOs

can

open free training centres to appraise them with this technology.
Grandchildren

can

teach

their grandparents about these gadgets. Too many features on mobile
phones

deter

the

elderly from using them. So, user-friendly models could be made especially
for

them.

Finally,

these gadgets could be made available to the elderly at subsidized rates.
To put it in a nutshell, I pen down saying that there is an unending list of
how

mobile

phones

and internet could help the elderly but a little effort is required to make
them techno-savvy.
Model Answer 2:
In this technology driven era, it is observed that elderly people exhibit lack
of interest towards the learning of new technology. This essay expresses the

ways older people can use technology and it also suggests some measures to
help older people overcome their lack of curiosity to take advantages of
new technology.
Obviously, new technology alleviates the workload and help to complete our
daily tasks instantaneously with high perfection and this does not exclude
the old people. For instance, people can pay the utility bills, do online
shopping or can complete bank transactions through Internet just sitting at
home. Older people, if taught how to take advantages of it, can save time

and perform their banking and other necessary tasks staying at home.
Undeniably, most of the elderly people are weak and unable to travel a lot.
So being able to pay the bills and maintaining the bank account at their
residence would be a blessing for them. Moreover the retired people are
socially isolated and less often contact their friends or relatives due to their
physical weakness. But using the Internet and mobile gadget they can chat,
talk or make video calls and enjoy their old age.
Furthermore, by the use of Internet they can also contact the family
physician and discuss their illness and can do the follow up. A simple video
chat with a grandchild who stays far away or watching a favourite movie
online could be a great satisfaction for a senior citizen. Once they are
introduced with the advantages of the new technology like mobile phone,
computer or Internet, they will not fear the technological devices.
Nevertheless, interests towards learning new thing, especially technology
related skills, decline as our age advances. This can be tackled by
motivation and support from the youngsters. For instance the
grandchildren can teach the grandfather and grandmother how to operate
a mobile phone or surf the Internet. In addition, mobile phones should be
manufactured keeping those old people in mind. Large display with larger

font, voice navigation, and ease of use could be some vital factors to
motivate old people to use cell phones. Instead of international language
like English, local or regional languages should also be incorporated in the
cell phone and websites so that the elderly people can follow the instruction
independently. Last but not the least family members’ inspiration and
supports can be two great factors to encourage old people to take
advantages of technological devices like cell phones and Internets. Old
people do not need to know how to built a website, rather they should be
taught how to browse a website and introducing them the positive and

interesting aspects of the technology would also encourage them to actually
use them.
In conclusion, the advanced technologies like mobile phone and Internet
could be really helpful for older people. Since older generation has a
tendency not to learn the use of such technologies, it is young generation
and family members’ responsibility to motivate and encourage them to take
advantages of those technologies.

Schools offer a wide range of courses such as physical education, music,
economics, philosophy, math, English , geography, physics and history.
Among all these subjects, which one do you think is the most important and
which one is the least important?

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.
You should write at least 250 words.

IELTS Writing Task 2/ IELTS Essay Sample
Sample Answer 1:
To decide which subject is the most important and which is the least
important

is

a

daunting

task. Each and every subject has its own importance which cannot be under
estimated

but

if

I have to choose one I would choose physical education as the most
important

one

and

philosophy as the least important one.
Physical education is the most important for all students at school level.
These

classes

improve students’ health, now and in the future. They burn calories, and
this

helps

them

to

maintain a healthy weight. The classes’ regular exercise develops good
habits

for

the

present and the future. People who exercise as children are more likely to
continue
exercising when they’re adults. This reduces the risk of heart disease,

diabetes,

and

other

serious illnesses.
Physical education also improves students’ mental health. It can be difficult
to

sit

in

class

all

day. Students can exercise and then relax after their physical activity. This
helps

them

to

feel

happier and more comfortable at school. The classes also include activities
that

help

with

stress reduction. Walking, stretching, and yoga are just a few of the
exercises

that

reduce

stress. When they have good mental health, they can do well in other
subjects also.
The students’ favourite part of physical education classes may be the
opportunity

to

communicate with their classmates. They enjoy talking to their friends
while

they

play

games. The students also learn how to work in teams. Teamwork is an
important

skill

that

they will use when playing sports or even at their jobs in the future.
As for the least important course, I have to say that I think philosophy is not
so

important

after all. This is a subject which can be there at the higher level for those

who

want

to

study

it. That is why, perhaps, in our Indian school curricula philosophy has no
place.
To put it in a nutshell, I pen down saying that, although all subjects are
important,

I

believe

that physical education is the most important and philosophy is the least
important.

Model Answer 2:
Nowadays, along with the emphasis on the overall development of
individuals, students now stay at schools also enjoy a variety of cultural
courses. The courses provided with them vary from basic language courses
such as english, chinese, french, to natural science and social science.
Among so many branches, it is really hard to say which is the most
important one and which is not, Personally, I think the basic language
education occupies the most vital position, while all the other locate in the
second important place.
The reason why I believe the basic language is important is based on the
following reasons: First of all, basic language is the bridge of
communication, if a person can master his/her native language well,
he/she will become lonely and isolated, which probably lead to mental and
psychological problem. Secondly, basic language is also the tool to enter
into the new knowledge space. As almost all others are spread by words, it
will be a barrier if him/her is unable to comprehend what meaning the
words are describing and sending.
In terms of the most unimportant one, I do not believe any one could be
classified into this type. To my knowledge, all the others play an important

role in the evolvement process of human being, mathematics enable us to
calculate precisely; music and painting make it possible to express our inner
feelings; physics and chemistry help us step into the industry age. Lack of
any one of them, human being would not step into today.
In conclusion, I personally think the basic language education is the most
important one, as they are the underground stone of human development,
while all the other disciplines place on the second important place, and
there is not existing the least important one.

In some countries, secondary schools aim to provide a general education
across

a

range of subjects. In others, children focus on a narrow range of subjects
related to a particular career. For today’s world, which system is
appropriate?
In some countries, secondary schools aim to provide a general education
across

a

range of subjects. In others, children focus on a narrow range of subjects
related

to

a

particular career. For today’s world, which system is appropriate?
It is a highly debated issue whether students should study many subjects or
only

a

few

subjects. Both systems have their own merits. The answer depends on the
students’

interests and the goals of their studies and the country’s requirement.

There are many advantages of a broad range of subjects. To begin with, a
broad

range

of subjects would provide a well rounded education which is very important
for

the

holistic development of the students. In addition, students could find out
what

their

real interests are as they would be exposed to a variety of fields of study.
Just

after

passing out of high school students really don’t know what they would be
good

at.

So,

if

they have to make decisions at that time, they would be guided by their
peers

or

parents. If they make a wrong decision at that time then they may drop out
of

school

or

end up with low grades.
Moreover, it is ideal for those students who have many interests. They will
pursue
education for education sake and not just learn a trade. Consequently, when
they

try

to

find out job after graduation, their versatility will allow them to apply for a
wider

range

of jobs.

On the other hand, there are many advantages of studying a narrow range
of

subjects.

Such courses are basically vocational in nature. Such students find it easy to
find

a

job

in

their specific field of study. Naturally, companies will be more interested in

job
applicants who have superior knowledge and so can make better
contributions.

What

is

more, these students enter the job market earlier and start earning. This
helps

them

to

support their families. This also allows students to focus on their interest
and

the

subject relevant to them. A physics or chemistry student may feel out of
place

if

he

has

to study ancient poetry or western literature. Finally, such students have
lesser

burden

and so more time for hobbies.
To put it in a nutshell, I pen down saying that, both systems have their own
merits.

So

it

depends on students’ choice and needs of the country. One size fits all

approach

cannot

be applied to today’s world.
Model Answer 2:
Secondary school curricula have drawn major public attention to their
spectrum of subjects. While an education program containing a wide range
of subjects would be beneficial to some extent, I firmly believe that a careeroriented one would be a better choice.
A curriculum providing general knowledge of diverse subjects benefits
secondary students in different ways. The most obvious benefit is that
students could gain the overview of a wide range of subjects, helping them
grasp an overall understanding of different aspects of life and develop

essential personal skills. Without the general knowledge of Math, writers,
singers, and actors would find daunting difficulties in managing their
family or personal finance. Vice versa, economists whose expertise is in
Math and Finance would fail to explain socio-economic matters if they do
not have a background in social sciences. Another clear benefit is that an
education program with various subjects empowers students with essential
orientation to determine their career passions which seldom come into
shape during their teenage years. Students have the opportunities to get
exposed to and engaged in various subjects to identify their occupation
fields of interest.
However, I am of the opinion that a specialized training curriculum is a
better choice because it would facilitate secondary students’ future career
preparation. The primary reason is that such a training program allows
students to nurture in-depth knowledge and skills in the occupation that
they set their heats on, paving a way for major professional advances. In the

current overwhelmingly competitive labor market, having a profound
insights into a particular field would endow young students with ultimate
advantages over other candidates, and, hence, provide them with brighter
job opportunities. Secondly, an education program with a strong focus on
profession-oriented modules can maximize students’ study efforts and
investment. In the era of overloading information, concentrating on a few
subjects would be the wisest learning way which could guarantee the
usefulness and fruitfulness of investment in education.
In conclusion, while the option of teaching diverse subjects has its merits, I
contend that specialized training system provides favorable education and
optimal professional preparation for secondary students to lead successful
career paths.

Model Answer 3:
Secondary school curriculum can be organised in a variety of ways. While
several countries adopt the education system which orientates the students
in a specific profession, I believe that the teenagers should have access to a
comprehensive learning programme with a wide range of subjects.
To begin with, a learning programme providing knowledge of a major
subject is beneficial in some ways. Being exposed to expertise and skills
required by a certain speciality at the young age, the students would stand
a great chance to not only have a well-defined career path, but also become
competent workers in their later life. For example, with students having
ambition to work as translators or applied language researchers in the
future, it is a course of basic grammar and vocabulary at their secondary
school that can realise the dream. In addition, current society of
specialization tends to favour employees with a good grounding in a single
field over those who have general knowledge but do not expert in a
particular area. Therefore, it is absurd to say that such career-driven

programmes are not appropriate to today’s world.
In stark contrast, however, it is better for the teenagers to have access to a
curriculum containing basic knowledge of various fields. The final purpose
of developing the comprehensive thinking of children should lie at the heart
of any secondary school learning programme, as they seem to be too young
to decide on a specific occupation to follow at that age. An ideal job is one
that provides enjoyment for the workers, and it is a well-rounded course
that can help children seek for a major they are interested in and nurture
the passion for it. To illustrate, secondary schools in the UK aim to teach

children different subjects ranging from Math to Arts, and their educational
philosophy is to put job orientation in the high school curriculum.
In final words, my opinions are on par with the idea that secondary
schoolchildren should be supplied with knowledge in as many fields as
possible.
Sample answer 4:
Although most children today enjoy the right to receive education, it is not
within their power to decide what subjects they may study at school.
Regarding this matter, educational theorists still find themselves at
loggerheads over whether secondary schools should impart knowledge of
various fields, or they should concentrate on teaching only a few selected
subjects relating to a certain sphere of education. From my perspective, I
reckon that secondary educational content should be narrowed down for
students.
First of all, a fewer choice of subjects to study at school will create a
window of opportunity for students to blossom socially. To further explain
this, students will not constantly find themselves in a battle against time
trying to complete their homework, to prepare for new lessons or to review
for upcoming exams. Instead, they will have more spare time to spend

outdoors, to be with their friends or just to be with themselves. In this way,
their self-confidence or communication skills will be boosted significantly.
It has been found that secondary students nowadays are feeling more
stressed and overwhelmed than ever before, and the reason to explain this
is quite self-explanatory. Many children today consider their schools prisons
and their teachers correctional officers who would not stop giving them dull

assignments to complete. When the inspiration to study is almost nonexistent, it is understandably difficult for the students to keep a good
performance at school. Consequently, the quality of education, on the whole,
will go downhill.
To conclude, I hold the firm belief that the schools should focus on a small
choice of practical subjects so that the lives of secondary students should
not be fettered down by any undue responsibility

Model Answer 5:
Secondary school curricula have drawn major public attention to their

Computers are increasingly used in education. In which areas do you think
are computers more important and in which areas are teachers more
important?
“Yesterday’s fiction is today’s reality”. Computers have revolutionized all the
aspects

of

human life especially education. Besides teachers, computers have also
become

an

indispensible part of education. They both are required for the holistic
development

of

a

person. Here, I am going to discuss the roles of both.
Computers have completely modified the criteria of examinations through
the

introduction

of online examinations, online debates and online counseling. Computers
are

more

important in those areas in which repetition is needed. For example, in
elementary

maths

and elementary language learning. Computer can be programmed to

provide

answers

to

an

endless number of simple questions.
There are certain areas in which computers supersede teachers and vice
versa.

For

instance

– computers help us simplify the topics through the audio and visual aids
like

working

models, videos etc. Also they can teach us for 24 hours in a day. Laptops
offer

a

unique

feature of portability and act as teachers even outside the class room.
Moreover

teachers

focus only on academic curriculum whereas computers, through internet,
develop

a

general

awareness about the various global issues such as terrorism, drug
trafficking,

global

warming etc and thus broaden our field of knowledge. Computers also
enable

us

to

be

well

within the range of any teacher around the world. Furthermore, being

human

beings,

teachers have a limited knowledge whereas computers with a huge
collection

of

e-books,

reference books and dictionaries offer us a complete and thorough
understanding

of

the

subject.
Nevertheless, the role of teachers cannot be refuted. They are the actual
scholars

in

action.

Although computers remain in our service for 24 hours a day but the 8
hours

spend

with

a

teacher is the quality time. A computer can efficiently check the answers but
the

corrections

can only be made by a teacher. Moreover, only a teacher can lend a
practical

hand

to

a

student. For example- only a doctor can teach his students on how to
perform

a

surgery?

It

cannot be taught by a computer in any way. There are other convincing
evidences

for

teachers such as teachers help a student develop good communication skills
and

other

social skills. The basic characters of a good human being are also inculcated
by

a

teacher.

Furthermore, a teacher also acts as the true guide, friend and philosopher.
These

are

the

teachers which encourage a student when he fails in studies.
To put in the nut-shell, I pen down concluding that, both computers and
teachers

are

specialists in their own areas of education. They should be looked on as two
angels

supplementing each other for the betterment of our children.
Model Answer 2:
The present era is called the era of technology and computers are
extensively used in all the sectors including education. With the increasing
presence of computers and Internet in education, many believe that the
traditional teaching method will soon become obsolete and computer based
teaching method will become the mainstream education system. I
personally believe that computer and technology without any doubt have
accelerated the education system but they will never replace teachers and
both computers and teachers have distinctive roles to play in education.
It is true that in some areas of education, computers could be more
important than teachers. For instance, in distance learning system, a
computer can become more important than a teacher. However, we must
remember that teachers are still important to run the education system
effectively. Second, computers are connected to a vast network called
Internet and they are better than teachers in terms of reference, research
and knowledge distribution. When a teacher has knowledge on a particular
course or subject, a computer connected to the Internet can offer almost
any information to a student in any field of study. Again, computers can
process huge amount of data per second and thus can be more helpful to
students while conducting research work or in scientific experiments. They
are also more important while evaluating a student’s performance. Finally
computers can be better equipped with recorded lectures and could be
more helpful to students than their teachers.

On the contrary, teachers are still considered as the backbone of our
education system. Computers might handle a large amount of data, assess
our exam papers more accurately or connect us to the world, but they
cannot teach us discipline, morality or value of time. Thus a teacher not

only teaches us important lessons from academic books, they actually instill
most important human qualities among us. Teachers are important to
inspire students, teach them morality and all the good qualities of life
where computers have almost zero contributions in doing so. Teachers are
more important in explaining intricacies of academic and personal life and
can become great mentors for students. Finally their role to evaluate us and
guide us in life is incomparable.
In short, I believe that computers are important in education where large
amount of data processing or automation is required while teachers are
important to inspire us, guide us and infuse good qualities among us.

Model Answer 3:
Computer is an essential part of people’s lives. They are used in many fields
such as technology, education, military, etc. Recently, the use of computers is
increasing dramatically in education and helps teachers in many ways.
Nowadays, both computers and teachers are necessary in education. With
many useful functions, computers provide students and teachers with a
vivid educational environment. Moreover, they have many softwares such as
Microsoft Office, Geometry, Maple, etc. These softwares make theory reduce
boredom. For example, in Maths, students are afraid of three-dimension
geometry. Computers can create 3D space for students to observe cube

easily. Besides, they can help teachers to have more interesting teaching
methods by images, video, etc. Therefore, students will understand lessons
easily than traditional teaching methods which only uses board and chalk.
Computer is a powerful tool in presentating lesson and offerings learners
with more real knowledge.
However, we can’t neglect the role of teacher. Not only does the teacher
teach knowledge but they also teach good behaviour to students. Computer

is just a machine so it only transmits what it is programed. It can tell
learners true and false things but it cannot explain them clearly like
teachers. Thus, teachers play indispensable role in teaching social sciences
and humanities issues.
In modern days, computer is a fantastic machine but it cannot replace
teacher. To develop education better and better, people have to realise the
advantages of computers and teachers. Computer is an important part but
it is not a determinable part in education.
The world of work is changing rapidly. Working conditions today are
not the same as before and people no longer rely on taking one job
for life.
Discuss the possible causes for these changes and give your
suggestions on how people should prepare for work in the future.
Sample Answer 1:
It is irrefutable that the work scenario is altering at a fast pace. Working
conditions

are

also different and the process of job-hopping is very common. This essay
