There is a story that the Queen was so font of Falstaff , a jolly fat gentleman,
who appears in “Henry IV” and “ Henry V”, that she asked Shakespeare to write a
play especially for her, which would show Falstaff in love. Shakespeare did this, and
called the play “ The Merry Wives of Windsor (1601)” – Nobody however has
recorded whether the Queen enjoyed this play or not. Presenting play at court was
also a great honour for the Lord Chamberlain’s Men, but it was also a great chore,
since it meant many extra rehearsals and special preparations. The costumes had to be
that much more lavish, and the make – up that much more perfect, to please the
Queen.
