Lesson: English conversation- how to speak English in pairs and groups
Objectives: To encourage Ss to speak English together in class by introducing useful language they can
use when working together in pairs and groups.
Time: 60 minutes
Activity 1: to talk about ways of participating in English conversations; to speak English in pairs

Give handout to each student.
Read the instruction aloud, then read the eight options alout to the class. Explain any unknow
words.
Have Ss work alone to mark the answers in the chart. Give them two minutes to complete the
task.
Go around helping as needed.
Have Ss form pairs. If there is an odd number of Ss, form one group of three.
Have one S read the instruction aloud.
Provide a model by asking one pair of Ss to compare their answer to the first item in the chart
while the rest of the class watches and listens
Go around the class as Ss work, encouraging them to speak English and offering help as needed.
When Ss have finished, ask for volunteers to share their opinions with the class.

Activity 2: to learn useful classroom language and when to use it.

Read the instruction and the sentences in the box aloud, and have Ss listen and repeat. Explain
any unknown words if necessary.
Model first by doing situation number 2 together with the class.
Give Ss about three minutes to match the sentences to the situation.
Go around the class helping as needed.

Activity 3: to listen to and practise a conversation

Have Ss look at the picture. Ask “what’s happening in the picture?”
Have Ss form a group of three to complete the conversation.
Have Ss listen to the audio, pausing a few times for Ss to check and correct their answer.
Ask for volunteers to write the correct answers on the board.
Have Ss choose roles and practise the conversation three times, switching roles each time.
Listen and correct their pronunciation.
