1.Word on the Street
Before watching:
1. How do you respond to the instruction: ’Never give to a
Beggar’?
Watch ‘Word on the Street’

Record your responses to each of the views expressed.
2. How would you respond to the young person’s answer?
3. What do you learn about ‘begging’ from the responses?
4. What question would you like to ask the individuals?
5. How do you think the individuals expressed themselves and
how persuasive do you think they were? (why?)
6. Comparing the negative and the positive responses – which
group ere most convincing?
7. Do you give to beggars?
8. List up as many reasons for giving and for not giving to
beggars as you can think of. Make a powerpoint
presentation.

Before Watching:
1. Why do you think some people end up homeless and
begging?
Watch the NCH: Real stories film.

2. Did you change your views in response to ‘Word on the
Street’ ? Why/why not?
3. List up as many reasons for homelessness as you can, based
on the accounts the young people give
4. What feelings do the young people express about their


homelessness?
5. How would you feel if suddenly you had nowhere to live?
6. What impact did the film have on you – and how is this
achieved by the film-maker?

7. Describe a day in the life of a beggar.


3.Real Story: Billie
Watch Billie’s Story:
/>1. Having listened to Billie’s story add up your list of reasons
for homelessness
2. What’s the worst comment Billie gets when trying to sell
the Big Issue?
3. What do you know about Billie’s circumstances? What is
stated and what is implied?
4. Discuss:
What are your responses to Billie? What does she make
you feel/think and what do you learn from her?
What would you like to ask her?

5. Compare this clip with NCH. (similar content but portrayed
very differently.)
- Which has more impact – why?
- Difference between e.g. shots/camera work, dialogue,
use of music, location etc


4.Real Story: Mick’s Story
/>1. Watch the film and focus on what Mick says about

people’s responses to him. How have you responded to
beggars in the past? How will you respond to beggars
in the future?

2. Create a 30 second video response to the question:
“Would you give to Mick?”
3. Write Mick’s story either in the first person or from
the point of view of his brother or one of his children.
4. What would you advise him to do?


Read and understand the questions, watch your
film and then answer the questions.

answering/solving the problem.
